[revised review, as of 3/3/19]I purchased this book because as a member of generation y (Millennial) and an active social, behavior, and policy researcher and practitioner I am desirous to access the author’s data, however, I have the following message for potential buyers/readers:I suggest caution! This book presents many interesting data points. However, the data is encrusted in unmasked bias. Although the author makes claims that this book is not intended for the purpose of advocacy, the use of so many loaded words and what appears to be an imbalance of highly emotional stories— conveniently critical of LDS doctrine and leaders—leads me to disagree. As an active, committed, and believing Latter-day Saints myself, I am highly suspicious of the author's motives. The composition of this book strikes me not so much as an academic-level piece of literature, as a cable news article. It seems to be written more to enthrall than educate. The use of loaded words, which engage the reader's emotion rather than their intellect, detracts from the data. The Next Mormon website (thenextmormon.org; created by the book’s author) treats this volume as scholarly and peer-reviewed. All self-aggrandizing bias aside, this is indeed typical scholarship these days. But when the bar for scholarly is reached by checking all the right social justice boxes (i.e., criticizing Christians, Whites, males, and straight people while making victims of people of color, females, and the LGBTQ community), and the peer-reviewers are all harmonizing in the echo chamber of liberal academia, it is no wonder. Moreover, the fact that Amazon.com posts reviews that call this book a ”tour de force” only fits with the liberal agenda.I entirely expect this book will be a success financially. No doubt countless faculty will make it required reading. Especially if they wish to un-brainwash any Mormons (or any conservative Christian) in their captive audience. Besides the basic anti-Mormon, this book will suit those who wish to confirm their prejudices about Mormons, their Bishop, males, older members of the ward, and any other misgiving they have related to the topic.I suggest reading this volume with the same caution a microbiology researcher would use, as they wade into a filthy cesspool seeking to gain knowledge without being contaminated by toxic bacteria.Respectfully,

Fantastic book that helps show where Mormonism is and where it can be. Using a variety of research, Riess shows some potential issues that exist within Mormonism, keeping her analysis fair and meaningful. As a millennial, this book helped highlight a lot of things I have felt but was unable to easily articulate.

I've been waiting for this book for a long time, even before I knew that there WAS going to be this book. Reiss is an excellent historian and this book sheds much needed light on the state of the Church today, as well as where it may be heading. Believers need to be able to accept the fact that things are not all rosy in order to make needed change. Interested outsiders will find the book helpful to them as they process what it is that makes members who and what they are. I'm glad personally that the book affirms my hope that we are becoming more "mainstream" even while we cling to the core beliefs and practices that make us unique. Well done and worth the effort.

Very great and needed book

I have been a bishop, stake president and mission president. This book provides insights that I could never get on my own. Since I am now over 60 and active, I welcome this information regarding members who are younger and think differently than me. The data and insight into why people no longer attend is so helpful to me as I think about how I can respond to the concerns of the day.Jana is a great writer and she deals with the challenges with sensitivity. Some of the issues are hard to read but they are so important for active Latter-day Saints to consider in our wards, families and with our LDS friends. I am grateful for Jana's willingness to help us confront the challenges of the day. There are those who don't want to consider them, but when we do, we become more aware which allows us to communicate more thoughtfully and often more kindly to those who come from a different perspective or generation.A must read for anyone in leadership.

As a Millennial and Mormon myself, I found this book to be fascinating, validating, and thorough. I love the human complexity it showed for individuals who are a part of this faith. I thought the author did a superb job of shedding light on some difficult and sensitive topics. I found the organization of this book to flow nicely. Thanks Jana!

I enjoyed the mix of hard statistics and anecdotes illustrating how they apply to real people. I have read very widely in Mormon studies and I do think this is the best study done since Armand Mauss's a generation ago. (I was pleased to see that the Salt Lake Tribune was able to reach Dr. Mauss for comment, and he was very complimentary towards what Dr. Reiss has done here.)Thus, I'm chagrined to see one-star reviews from people who apparently didn't like what they saw. As near as I can tell from following Dr. Reiss's work since her Kickstarter, she approached this research with curiosity and no particular ideological axe to grind. Well done!

Jana's meticulous research into Mormon millennials has not only provided social scientists with an invaluable dataset, it gave me new-found insights into how to help those with whom I serve as an active member of the LDS church. I'd give it 6 stars if I could.
