Love the Lonely Planet Diving & Snorkeling books. I wish they still published them.

If you are planning a SCUBA diving trip to the Maldives I would recommend this book for some useful information and eye candy in preparing an amazing underwater experience. I also recommend it because the photographs have been taken since the El Nino damage to the reefs so they portray a realistic view of what you will encounter. While the reef damage is unfortunate and visible, the Maldives are still an amazing for the variety of life that you can experience; whale sharks, mantas, hammerheads, napoleon fish, etc... can all be found in various location in the Maldives. Once, in the Maldives though, I would rely on the advice of the locals and the local dive shops. These people know which sites are best under the current conditions and where the sorts of things you would like to experience are to be found at that moment. So the book is not really a necessity, more something to wet your appetite for the trip. My experience included diving with a whale shark, being surrounded by giant mantas that swam in circles around me, seeing many sharks, and a very friendly sea turtle that seemed to think my camera might be an edible treat!

This book has been a life saver as a resource book. I bought it for a course I had to take. The required book was by the same authors, only a lot more expensive since its hard cover, and more detailed. I got this book as an additional resource and have found it to be very helpful. It breaks down the 'legal' points into easy to understand (and remember) language. It still covers all the aspects of school law. It is easy to reference. The index and list of case studies that are referenced in the book is easy to follow. Basically, this has been a book that I could read and get the gist of the topic and an understanding of the legal cases that support the different laws. I can see myself keeping this book handy.

I got the book fast. It is in good quality and exactly what I needed.

Be aware that this book was copyrighted in 2010. And, although the book is well written and covers a lot of details, it is lacking in changes and developments that have occurred over the past six years. Specifically, I found it lacking in information on micro-inverters, on mounting panels on concrete tiles, on limitations in positioning panels as required by fire codes, and on providing visual information in figures and diagrams. Interestingly, at the time I purchased the book it was the highest rated book on the subject yet the information is six years old. This fact doesn't speak well to finding a good book that is also current.

I'm coming at this as a homeowner and generally handy person who's up for a bit of a challenge, wanting to install my own PV system on the roof of my Southern California home. There seem to be a lot of books on solar power that are just kind of informational and theoretical and don't really to tell you how to actually plan & install a system in a hands-on practical way. This is one of the few that actually aims to do that.Looking at a finished PV system sitting on someone's roof, it is kind of deceptively simple. And the nuts and bolts of installation are not that hard, if you can do electrical work, it's not that different from any other kind of electrical equipment installation. BUT. The planning and understanding the components is really quite a challenge. The equipment has very unique properties. You have to analyze your electrical needs, survey the site and it's solar potential, understand the impact of the daily and seasonal workings of the sun and weather, figure out if you want batteries and how much battery power you need, and understand the main components, the solar panels themselves, the charge controller, the inverter, and the circuits and safety provisions. Sizing all the components. Permitting and nuts and bolts hardware installation. The book covers all of this, for the most part, in an organized, disciplined, and reasonably thorough manner.In fact, the book seems to have even higher goals than mine, which is just to plan, install, and manage my own home system. This book is also overtly aimed at those interested in becoming a professional PV installer. You'd be pretty well grounded in that goal having thoroughly absorbed this book, along with some experience actually installing some systems, I think.Is it perfect? No. For one thing, it's a "For Dummies" book so the introduction and organization are, frankly, kind of ridiculously repetitive. He tells us what he's going to tell us about 7 times - not exaggerating - before he actually starts the telling. And then at the start of each chapter, he tells you what he's gonna tell you another two or three times for good measure. Tiresome. This book is not really for dummies wanting to get a little basic information. True dummies, I think, are not going to be installing their own PV systems. It's for people with some ability who want to become experts.There are a few things that could simplify things for a lot of people. Yes, it's good and necessary to be able to analyze someone's electrical needs by going around to each appliance and light and electrical load and checking it's wattage and the owner's usage patterns. But there's an easier and even more accurate way that most solar pros make use of, which is to simply check the past electrical bills for average daily, monthly and seasonal energy consumption. That's not an estimation, that's hard data. And you're gonna want to do this even after you do a load analysis just to double check your work. Sure, newly constructed buildings won't have past electric bills. But a lot of cases certainly will. But absolutely no mention of this tactic is made in the section on load analysis. Really odd.Next, I would have liked to see some representative, carefully chosen, very specific examples of actual completed solar installations to illustrate in concrete terms the main types of installations (grid direct, stand-alone battery, and grid-connected with battery back-up.) How they were sized. The specific components used. Photos of the installations. That would have been immensely helpful in seeing how all the separate steps are brought together to a completed whole. There's nothing like that. This leaves all the separate chapters on various stages of the planning and execution seeming still theoretical and somewhat abstract.There's not a single actual photo in this book. The diagrams and charts are fairly good. But not enough.On balance, this is still a very good book with most of the critical theory and information in one place that you are absolutely going to need to do a proper PV installation. Are you really going to be ready to immediately plan and build a PV system? Probably not quite. But you'll have a very thorough grasp of what all the considerations are.

This is an excellent introduction to solar power. It is very well written by a man that obviously knows his subject. It is lucid and yet apparently comprehensive. I have a hard time getting my head around many principles of electricity, but Mr. Mayfield gently nudges me along with illuminating analogies and precise, simple and understandable language. I have tried other books on the subject written by electrical engineers but my eyes have quickly glazed over. Although I usually pass by anything in the "Dummies" stable, this book is worth every penny and then some. Thanks to Mr. Mayfield for the considerable work that obviously went into the production of this fine technical publication.

Presents a lot of good, useful information. It would have been much better if a complete real-life example had been included at the end that tied together all of the concepts presented. Also, more information on specific hardware pros and cons would have been helpful.

Written in easy to understand, informal style, the book is enjoyable, written by someone who obviously has lots of expertise with the subject. There is endless practical advice for installers, with all the technical details and code-specific information to install virtually any kind of residential PV system.I purchased this book on Kindle. While the diagrams all translated fine, I would recommend purchasing the physical copy. I say this because this book was written primarily for people looking to become a professional installer of PV systems. If that is not what you are looking to do, I would caution that this book may not be the best fit for you. (I personally purchased it to make myself knowledgeable enough to install my own system. It is probably over-kill for that purpose) As a professional/repeat installer, there are several sections/tables/equations which you should have ready access to for easy reference. The Kindle edition is not built for that kind of thing.Overall, a great resource for the person who currently knows little about PV systems who wants to become extremely knowledgeable about this exciting renewable resource.

It was frustrating that off-grid installations were treated very secondary in this book. Obviously to professional installers that's probably the case but as an off-grid DIYer I found it really annoying. I think the author should write a 2nd dummies book geared specifically to off-grid installations. I didn't like my topic being treated as if it only sort of mattered.

Very well organized book for the do it yourselfer who wants to install a PV system in their home. Only drawback that I saw was the lack of info on installing a PV system with microinverters. After doing some other research, the microinverter option is really the simplest way to go.

I haven't read all of it yet, but it seems to cover all the bases of what you need to know from the parts I have looked at. What I want to do is have a small backup power system that could keep things running if I lose utility power.

As someone who is in a relationship and wants to put Christ in the center of that, I find this book really awesome and heartwarming. It's like this books tells you everything you need to do as a routine for you and your partner to last. I like how the book comes on to you like a friend and encourages you to be kind and open up your heart with no conditions. This book has made me think a lot. I like its impression on me!

I bought this initially for my boyfriend and I to add to our daily devotionals. We liked it so much I bought a copy for my parents. They road trip quite a bit and like to take it along to make the trips more interesting.Whether you have been together for months or years or decades, if you are looking to get to know your partner, try this book.My only reason for four stars instead of five is that some of the questions seem to be really similar. So that brings about an almost identical conversation to a previous one.

This is a wonderful recourse for those of us who don't communicate. I have learned more about my husband of 42 years after going halfway through this book. I just wish they would come up w another book w more questions. I carry it in my purse so if we're in the car or restaurant I can get to it. Highly recommend.

They provide a neutral source of origin, so that “being nosy” doesn't dampen the activity. You can just have fun!I recommend this book It's a great assist for getting to know someone a little better.

This book is an overall great value for established vegans and beginners.It includes all the vegan staples you have probably already seen such as black bean burgers, risotto and roasted bell peppers. It has a lot of creative options too, even if you have already found favorite recipes for those staples. Some of my favorites found from this book were the bbq bean bowl, quinoa and broccoli stew and mexican casserole... something to spice up your normal routine.My favorite thing was that it sticks to NORMAL and cheap ingredients, especially the dried goods. This is awesome if you want to try this diet but don't want to get a ton of specialized ingredients.The included meal plan lays every meal out for 6 weeks including shopping lists and nutrition facts. I like this, just feel the shopping plan could be more specific with amounts. I.e. "2 kales" "1 bottle of olive oil" but you can figure this out with the recipes and once you get used to making them it'll be easier.I like all the small details included that helps take the stress off of new vegans... what kind of beans or legumes should i buy? How long to cook or soak the different kinds, will they give me enough protein? This is all answered.The one thing I probably dislike about this meal plan and recipe book is the breakfast options are highly reliant on smoothies and sweet "meals." It does have oat-based options but I was looking for a bit more in this department. Nothing wrong with it, but just not my preference.Great book overall. I think you can get your money's worth in a month or two out of this book and would recommend the buy!

For health reasons I needed to change my diet. Much easier said than done. Well, let me tell you, Vegan Meal Prep saved my life. I am care giver to my 87 yo mother in law, who lives with us and has a number of medical concerns. Top concern is her Alzheimer's. I have diabetic neuropathy in my hands and in my feet. So running to my doctor, her doctor, hospital for this test and that test. What do you eat? Every type of fast food between, here and where I'm going. One day I found Vegan Meal Prep. I needed to go plant based, and I needed to be able to stick to it. My doctor said pick up the food, or pick out a casket. I know nothing about cooking or healthy food. To cut calories I'd order one giant burger instead of 2.Vegan Meal Prep taught me how to eat better, what to eat and when. I now set up my weekly meals on Sunday nights, after using the included Meal plans to guide my shopping. Using this book, I'm saving money, eating way healthy, and losing weight. I even slip in some veggies and other healthy items in my M I L dinner. Before, I started cooking, the only green thing she ate from the fridge, was the bologna! 😂I completely wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who wants to live!!!

This is a very comprehensive book. Not hard to read or understand...but definitely comprehensive. It breaks down all of the important information one could need when wanting to get serious about a vegan lifestyle and meal prepping. It is structured well and flows logically.I will say some of the info and the recipes are a little too ambitious for me personally. For example, I am not going to make my own vegan cheese or hummus. Call me lazy but I much rather spend the money to simply purchase those items. But that is just me.The recipes overall seem detailed but also easy to understand and follow. I have yet to try making one of them as I just got the book today. But at first sight, I would say there us something in it for everyone.The instructions on how to best store each one are super helpful.There is also a 6 week meal plan plus one shopping list per week included. Personally, I wont follow that because I do intermittent fasting and do not eat as many meals as there are in the meal plan BUT it is good for inspiration anyway.The spice mixes at the end are a cool touch. It will save time to premix those and just pull out one jar when wanting a specific flavor as opposed to flavoring each dish from scratch basically.

I have not made anything yet from this book because I am just ready to start my meal prep for next week. However, I have had a chance to look through it. The first part is packed with useful info and has lots of easy to read charts. There is a chapter on essntials, hich doesn’t really interest me, cuz I will buy store bought, but a lot of people do make their own. Has a section how how to prep with tips on freezing, containers, preparing, etc. The smoothie recipes are called “bags” and you make them and freeze in bags. That is a great idea I have never thought of. It has a few weekly meal plans and shopping lists which I am looking at now to prepare for next week. Looks like the recipes all have nutritional info listed with them. One thing I would like to see, would be to add “soy-free” to the recipes if it is soy-free. A lot of people are allergic to soy, and I cannot eat it due to breast cancer. But I will review each recipe and make substitutions if needed for the soy (I am getting good at that.). If I am pleased with these recipes, I will probably go ahead and purchase the hard copy as I prefer the book format over a Kindle format. But all in all , I think this is a great book, and am excited to get started for next week.

It takes a comprehensive look at what makes up a balanced and healthy plant based diet,and provides a detailed meal plan. The recipes are good,and has a nice variety,while being easy enough to do for a meal plan. I recommend this book for anybody looking to save time,and eat a balanced plant based diet.

We live at a time of spiritual lethargy, which is often rightly equated with laziness. In part, this lethargy is the result of philosophical postmodernism that winsomely accepts ideas in obvious tension. Tension arises when my reality and your reality differ, but rather than work out the differences we just ignore the tension, as if it would just go away. But when the subject turns to God, this tension will not simply go away because God’s salvation is not defined by our convenient, custom realities; God defines the one reality that matters because he created it. If we are going to understand God’s reality, then we need to study theology.In his book, Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God, J. I. Packer addresses the question: “if God is in control, why should we do anything at all?” (8) Packer answers the question by first observing that the apparent contradiction between divine sovereignty and human response is just that “an appearance of contradiction” (24), not a real contradiction, which arises because God is both king and judge (27). As king, God makes the rules; as judge, he holds us accountable. Packer writes:“What the objector has to learn is that he, a creature and a sinner, has no right whatsoever to find fault with the revealed ways of God. Creatures are not entitled to register complaints about their Creator.” (28)Because we are created by God as moral agents, we must not be tempted neither to believe that we alone are responsible for the Gospel’s effectiveness nor that God will sovereignly bring the Gospel to everyone on his own (30-40).Packer sees evangelism as “to present Christ Jesus to sinful men in order that, through the power of the Holy Spirit, they may come” (44) to him in faith and as having only two motives—the love of God and the love of mankind (74).The presentation of the Gospel message, according to Packer, has 4 parts: it is a message about God, sin, Christ, and a summons to faith and repentance (60-71). Of course, the details here matter. For example, Packer see the true conviction of sin as having 3 aspects:1. Awareness of a wrong relationship with God;2. Conviction of sins always includes conviction of particular sins.3. Awareness of our sinfulness—complete corruption and perversity in God’s sight. It is short enough to be read quickly, but packed with such solid theology that it can be read over and over with new benefits. The strength of this book is not the presentation of methods for evangelism (Packer spends little time with this), but rather the theological tension of divine sovereign and human responsibility. Packer leads the reader into the deep end of the doctrinal pool gently, slowly, and with Scriptural fidelity and clarity. I love this book for several reasons, but here are the main ones:1. Packer does not skirt the main issue. He deals with what he calls the "antinomy" - that is, two clear truths standing in apparent contradiction to one another. He humbly shows that Scripture, far from being contradictory, reveals truth that is sometimes irreconcilable for finite beings to exhaustively comprehend. Packer holds divine sovereignty and human responsibility together in tension, without letting one outweigh the other. This is the ground of the book.2. Packer gives one of the best summaries of the gospel I've ever read. Without watering it down one bit, he simplifies the message to four main heads (namely, God, Sin, Christ, Summons to Repentance and Faith). In his usual style, he peppers in Scripture explaining it clearly along the way. In this, Packer is both explaining the gospel to future evangelists, but he's also demonstrating to those same individuals how to explain it to others. Simply brilliant!3. The theology of this book, namely that God is sovereign (King) and that God is also righteous (Judge) is helpful for many areas of Christian living. The question of how God can hold sinners accountable and without excuse when he himself is the sovereign Potter, forming the clay as he purposes is applicable to other areas, like prayer. We are responsible to pray and petition God, and the fervent prayers of the righteous avail much, but God has an immutable decree that governs all. The Christian can have great confidence that their prayers lead to powerful results, not despite God's sovereignty but because of it. The sovereignty of God doesn't stifle prayer, but encourages it. Just so, the fact that almighty God sends laborers to his harvest gives great confidence of reaping a harvest.My favorite thing about this book is watching how Packer does theology. He says elsewhere that theology is "for doxology and devotion" - that is, for the theologian to rejoice in worship and go deep in faithful obedience to their God. He does it here, even while dealing with one of the most difficult theological problems. As a loyal servant, he tethers himself to the Scripture and applies it with remarkable practicality for soul-winning. Far from saying one's Calvinism should preclude evangelism, he allows his meaty theology to have hands, feet, and a mouth to share the good news to a dying world.
