Amazon.com Review

Unless you're a vampire, you know that garlic is a critical element in good eating. For most people, this knowledge comes from happy experience with garlic-laced cuisines (and what notable culinary tradition is without it?), not book learning, and not working the fields to produce the aromatic bulb. For Stanley Crawford, the love of garlic comes from both scientific study and three decades of labor in the field to produce the exquisite bulbs, knowing full well that "if you grow good garlic people will love you for it." Crawford deserves similar affection for Garlic Testament, a lyrical memoir of his work as a farmer in northern New Mexico, one that combines autobiography, gardening hints, and a quiet philosophy of life. "Farming and writing are both labors ... conducted on flat planes in relative solitude," he writes, but in this fine book--which compares well with the work of fellow farmer-writer Wendell Berry--Crawford opens his gate and invites our company. --Gregory McNamee

Thanks to a fellow Amazon reviewer, who has purchased some garlic from Stanley Crawford at the Farmer’s Market in Santa Fe, I was introduced to his work. At a lovely second-hand bookstore in Santa Fe, I purchased, and would go on to read and review Mayordomo: Chronicle of an Acequia in Northern New Mexico, concerning Crawford’s time as the “ditch boss,” maintaining the acequia in a small northern New Mexico valley. But that reading was over five years ago. As I have grown increasingly obsessed with eating garlic – even raw garlic which Crawford eschews – I felt the read of his “testimony” on same long overdue.Crawford grew up in southern California before the endless housing tracts took it over, would graduate from the University of Chicago, find the love of his life, an Australian, Rose Mary, while writing a novel on Crete and decided, like a few other people, to seek refuge from the turmoil of the ‘60’s, and its aftermath, including the Vietnam War, in one of the remote valleys of Northern New Mexico in the early 1970’s. Unlike so many others who flitted into these valleys, for the taste of another side of America, the Crawfords “stuck,” and made a home, literally with their own hands, as well as a passable living, all with the help of others.Their home is in Dixon, NM, which is roughly half way between Taos and Santa Fe, and is 6,500 ft. above sea level. About a third of the book simply concerns the natural world in which the earth is worked and re-worked, changed, transformed, and renewed throughout the seasons. In terms of nature writing, I would place Crawford alongside Joseph Wood Krutch who would also write of the American Southwest in The Desert Year (Sightline Books). Of course, Crawford spent many more than a single year here, coming up with observations such as: “Last of all return the nighthawks, who several stories above the bats will sieve the higher atmosphere of its fine spray of insect protein, an airborne plankton tumbled up from the ground by slow breakers of cool air rolling down each evening from the higher mountains.” He also devotes an entire chapter to a magpie.Another third of the book is about the cultivation and selling of garlic (along with onions and flowers, in the “honorable mention” category.) If one thinks peeling a garlic bulb is a bit of work, Crawford chronicles where the real work is. Often, as one of the chapter titles states, “third world” backbreaking work, particularly for someone who is 6’3,” as he is. Garlic is planted in the fall. There are several different types. Unlike most crops, 10-12% of the crop must be held back as seed for the next harvest. In several ways, garlic is “countercyclical” to other crops, growing when they do not. Crawford is quite forthright about a key aspect of his venture: one might have fantasies about a life of independence and “self-sufficiency” when retreating to a remote NM valley, but the successful cultivation of garlic requires numerous other people helping along. One of the best things I think he does his provide some ever-so-elusive meaningful summer jobs, often the first they will ever have, to young teenagers. And his parents, in their 80’s, a fit father, a mother blinded by a stroke, find additional meaning to their lives by assisting him.The final third concerns his wonderful ruminations about a life along a path less traveled. He claims membership, along with one other, in the alt-alumni club of the University of Chicago. No Nobel Prizes in Physics… et al. Rather a life that involves walking through the fields in winter, contemplating the real meaning of “wealth.” Probably a much more important consideration than finding “God’s particle,” the Higgs boson. Consider: “This is wealth that has not yet been driven through the filters of abstraction and stripped of its sensual and material qualities.” Or, on the nature of his work: “…an invitation to usefulness that nothing else so forthrightly poses.” Or, “I do by choice what much of the rest of the world must do by dire, brutal necessity.” And “where the story all began,” at least one history changing story, Los Alamos, that very “Anglo” town, where people “go up to,” as opposed to the other towns that people “go to” is also a weekly market destination for the Crawfords. “Most of the farmers who sell in Los Alamos are Hispanic. Most of the customers are Anglo women. As an Anglo male with a university education, I’m on the wrong side of the wooden planks and apple boxes that make up my stand. But my customers have decided I’m all right. In fact, I’m not.”Crawford’s “all right” by me, particularly the “not” part. 6-stars.

What might you do for a day job if you write novels? Grow garlic of course. If there is poetry in garlic the author discovers it here. His responses and explorations of the soil the sunlight, the air and the irrigated water, and the way that garlic likes to grow, make this account a compelling read. The book takes us through the planting, growing, harvesting, and to-market cycle, also telling the story of years and how the author's understanding has developed and matured. Stanley Crawford simultaneously intrigues us with an almost transcendent appreciation of the natural processes, and challenges us with perceptive commentary on the bigger agribusiness-political complex. A delightful book, detailing a huge achievement.

I live in the busy world of a large city and work 40 hrs/wk. So, one of the things I look for in a book is its ability to take me to another time and place, gently and seamlessly. And I got that in this book. I got blue skies, sunny days and cool evenings in a laid back farming community in NM, got to meet locals, characters, and learned a lot about garlic. I've always loved garlic (doesn't everyone?) and, even if you know quite a bit about its properties, folklore, and growing it, I'd be very surprised if you didn't still learn something new about it. A very good read.

Lovely written book. For a newly transitioning farmer, it was a nice read.

for a serious garlic farmer/gardener/grower, it is an interesting an poetic insight into someone else's life who depends on small farming. throughout the interesting story there are some good garlic growing insights. be warned that it is a story that has good garlic info in it, not an all information dense growing compendium.

I have bought this book several times and share it with discerning friends often - beautifully written and the kind of story that makes the reader want to hop a plane and visit the author and his wife and offer to work in the fields. Simply lovely.

One of my favorite books...I tend to "re-read" books every so often, and I figured it was time I got my own copy. About community and man's relationship with nature. Oh yeah, and garlic.

very good book

Vita Sackville-West was a successful novelist, but she was also renowned for the famous and magnificent garden she planned and built with husband Harold Nicholson. The garden at Sissinghurst was their labor of love. In fact, it was the subject of an ongoing newspaper column by Sackville-West for many years.Sarah Raven, an author in her own right and married to Sackville-West's grandson, has put the story together for publication, interweaving Sackville-West's commentary with her own, and with pictures of the garden, then and now. There is lots of practical gardening advice, along with some insights into the bygone era that Sackville-West inhabited. Highly recommended to the right audience; you know who you are, or you might not still be reading.

For the reader who knows the garden's creators, their lives and their literary output, this book offers behind-the scenes revelationsperhaps not known. Sarah Raven would know these stories and she shares them generously in this book. There are much better books in the marketplace for the reader unfamiliar with Sissinghurst, whether its garden or its history. This isn't the place to start!Read Vita's books, Tony Lord and/or Jane Brown. Then, enjoy Sarah Raven's lovely book.

This book is a mental vacation for anyone who loves English gardens & Sissinghurst in particular. It has delighted & inspired me.

This book gives great insight into the thinking behind the creation of the garden and the person who created it - excellent reading

I found thehistory of Sisinghurst to be most interesting since no other books I read about thesubject have been so complete. There is a great deal of information on plants that I foun d a bit too much. It depends on the readers' interest. All in all it is a good read.

Yes, this book brings out the plant names and combinations Vita and Harold Nicholson put together (plant marriages), color and the detail of property and buildings through the ages. Most informative from garden aspect. One of the greatest gardens of all time.

I have visited Sissinghurst and walked its grounds for days. I enjoyed reading more in depth about Vita and Harold's life together and how the gardens were created. Not a coffee table book but one to place on your nightstand.

Sort of interesting but not enough great color photos

I live in a state that is 49th in the nation in education. I have been able to pass on some great tips for improving lesson planning to principals in schools that I visit. I think that this should be required reading for struggling schools.

This book is fabulous! Packed with big concepts but concise enough to see how they can be implemented. Definitely one of my new "go to" type of educational books.

Great

Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga and Graphic Novels, by Scott McCloud

Amazon.com Review

Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics was published in 1993, just as "Comics Aren't Just for Kids Anymore!" articles were starting to appear and graphic novels were making their way into the mainstream, and it quickly gave the newly respectable medium the theoretical and practical manifesto it needed. With his clear-eyed and approachable analysis--done using the same comics tools he was describing--McCloud quickly gave "sequential art" a language to understand itself. McCloud made the simplest of drawing decisions seem deep with artistic potential. Thirteen years later, following the Internet evangelizing of Reinventing Comics, McCloud has returned with Making Comics. Designed as a craftsperson's overview of the drawing and storytelling decisions and possibilities available to comics artists, covering everything from facial expressions and page layout to the choice of tools and story construction, Making Comics, like its predecessors, is also an eye-opening trip behind the scenes of art-making, fascinating for anyone reading comics as well as those making them. Get a sense of the range of his lessons by clicking through to the opening pages of his book, including his (illustrated, of course) table of contents (warning: large file, recommended for high-bandwidth users):

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Every medium should be lucky enough to have a taxonomist as brilliant as McCloud. The follow-up to his pioneering Understanding Comics (and its flawed sequel Reinventing Comics) isn't really about how to draw comics: it's about how to make drawings become a story and how cartooning choices communicate meaning to readers. ("There are no rules," he says, "and here they are.") McCloud's cartoon analogue, now a little gray at the temples, walks us through a series of dazzlingly clear, witty explanations (in comics form) of character design, storytelling, words and their physical manifestation on the page, body language and other ideas cartoonists have to grapple with, with illustrative examples drawn from the history of the medium. If parts of his chapter on "Tools, Techniques and Technology" don't look like they'll age well, most of the rest of the book will be timelessly useful to aspiring cartoonists. McCloud likes to boil down complicated topics to a few neatly balanced principles; his claim that all facial expressions come from degrees and combinations of six universal basic emotions is weirdly reductive and unnerving, but it's also pretty convincing. And even the little ideas that he tosses off—like classifying cartoonists into four types—will be sparking productive arguments for years to come. (Sept.) First, my review of the physical aspect of the book I received: Looks like it was a used book, lots of bent corners, edges were worn. The first two-thirds of the entire book are dedicated to the history/psychological analysis of comics; very little in terms of how to actually do anything. Great for history buffs, a waste of time for anyone looking to learn how to make comics. This is the same info McCloud wrote in his other book "Understanding Comics; The Invisible Art". Same books, different covers. The last third part of the book McCloud finally starts to write about technique (briefly though as he again wanders off into the philosophy of Comics).I did find a few useful pages which actually came close to a hands-on guide; where he showed examples of character facial expressions and when he wrote about the effect of different pens.Don't get me wrong, McCloud is a good writer and illustrator. My gripe is that I was expecting more hands-on techniques on how to make comics, in other words a "How To" book instead of a "Comics Are..." book.I found "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" by Stan Lee and John Buscema much more helpful in regards to actually make comics.

I really love it BUT why can't this be an e-book for purchase too? I don't really want to purchase any more books. I live in a studio and carry a device to read comics and books.

Excellent, concisely written book. Provides a wonderful spectrum of suggestions, hints, and professional recommendations that assists in pointing an artist in going in a more effective story-telling direction. Touches on topics such as clarity, setting up the scenes, and learning the difference between throwing words and images on a piece of paper and "hoping" the audience gets it versus carefully thinking about, constructing, and presenting images and words effectively to convey a story. I've recommended this book to several other comic artists and writers!

I got this book for a Japanese culture class!I wasn't sure if this book would be good or not, but Scott McCloud really knows what he is talking about! It's super straightforward and easy to understand. He will show you what makes a good comic, and give you for components and formulas for being able to convey what you want graphically! I really like it. Even if you don't like reading or drawing your own comics (who doesn't!?) it's pretty interesting to know that there is an actual art to making comics (it sounds like a pun but I don't intend for it to be! haha).

What an invaluable resource! I am interested in creating my on webcomic but I wasn't sure how or where to start and this book has helped me figure it out! I read it in the span of a few days too because it just flows really well. I also love the bits of humor mixed in, it helps keep the learning portion very lively and entertaining.

If you want to know how to write and understand the mechanics of graphic novels, this is your go-to manual. The entire book is illustrated as the graphic novel so all the elements are immediately understood. My nine year old daughter consumed the chapters and created a comic strip at the end of every chapter. It helped me understand how best to write toward the frames and what words impact the most. Fantastic Book!

I first came across this book in my junior year of college - it was assigned to my animation class as a textbook. When I opened it, I was caught off guard by the fact that the entire book is done in a comic format. As I read, however, the decision to teach visually could not have been more justified."Making Comics" is one of, if not the, best-written sources for understanding visual storytelling that the market has to offer. McCloud begins by explaining the nature of comics - what they are, what different kinds of comics there are - and branches into incredibly detailed coverage of every aspect of the process of creating a comic. McCloud walks the reader through the mechanics of comics (how to frame, write, and illustrate comics most effectively) into the more tricky technical area of facial expressions and how to draw them with clear, practical, and humorous voice. Often, he will illustrate the points he makes within his own comic panels, or in a didactic side panel next to his own commentary. McCloud's guidance extends to how words interact with the art, how to create believable settings, understanding the available tools for creating comics, and a final overview of understanding the world of comics and the many different genres they branch into.To wit, this is a book I've returned to time and time again for reference - and I'm not a professional comic artist by any stretch. This is a valuable piece of reference material for anyone interested in storytelling, expression through visual means, and even some basic human psychology. Whether you're brand new to graphic novels or a longtime fan, this book will forever change how you experience comics in all their shapes and forms.

I bought this book expecting an illustrated how-to on different ways to format scripts for comics. Instead, I found a very fun read on the overall aesthetics of comics as a whole. If you're looking for a book on scripts, you'll be disappointed - there's nothing in here about that - but in fact you won't really be disappointed at all, because it's a must-read for artists AND writers. I would recommend this as part of the curriculum of any Media Aesthetics course, not just for comics but for film and video as well. It illustrates many of the concepts used in filmmaking, and in a much more interesting way than the usual texts. The book is funny, interesting, and above all, timeless. The principles you will learn here as applied to comic books can be translated easily into all forms of visual media. I highly recommend it.

I'm very impressed with Raw Energy. I've been looking for ways to add more raw food to my diet, but not necessarily at dinner. And I don't have time, nor the organization, for raw food cookbooks that make you start an entree 3-5 days ahead of time to sprout, soak and dehydrate the creation. This book focuses on snacks.I like that most recipes use ingredients I already have around the house. There are a few with more exotic ingredients like spirulina powder, but these are easy to skip over if you don't wish to buy the ingredient. Each recipe is fairly simple and straight forward. Most use a blender or food processor, a few use a dehydrator (but if you're into raw food, you probably already have these anyhow). There are lots of recipes that omit frequently allergic ingredients such as dairy, egg or gluten so I can make snacks for my friend with food allergies.I just made Cashew Maple Oatmeal Squares and they taste just like an out-of-the-oven oatmeal cookie, but cold. There's also recipes for breakfast cereals, "milk"shakes and smoothies, dips, trail mixes and lots of desserts. This book is going to be getting a lot of use at my house.

I really cannot say enough about it--this book has made quite an entrance in our house. My 14 year old daughter who has never read cookbooks looks through it every day and is truly fascinated with the recipes. They make the simple ingredients into fantastic little energy snacks that everyone in the family love!!! We don't care so much about the fact that they are raw recipes, although that's great, but just that they're wonderful tasty and healthy tidbits. We all love chocolate and little sweet snacks and we've made several of the balls for the fridge. My daughter has made a few of the smoothies and I've been making the muesli for breakfast several times a week for months. I've also made the parfaits for a snack after school, and we are going to try some of the dehydrated balls this week. We've had it for months and the excitement hasn't died--even my picky husband likes the treats from this book!!! Just love it so much, MORE BOOKS LIKE THIS, PLEASE!!!!!

I absolutely love this book!I love the simplistic instructions and descriptions that are located in the beginning of the book, since there were some ingredients for recipes that I was a bit confused about (never hearing of some things). But the ingredients were not hard for me to find as most were found in my local grocery store or in my local health food store. The ingredients also were not very expensive. One thing that may get expensive is the use of dried fruits and such, but if you have a food dehydrator then save money and dry them yourself! In the back of this book there is a list not only of the resources used for this book, but also of recommendations for other books to read, as well as websites. Love that this is there! I have checked a few out and so far I find them really helpful and some are even fascinating.I am a college student who struggles with finding tasty, healthy food that I can afford. While for many recipes you need a dehydrator or maybe a food processor or blender, which these items can be pricey if you do not already own them, but the recipes themselves are not expensive if you take into consideration of how many servings are made and so on. Over the last two years I have saved up for, and gotten as holiday gifts, the tools/appliances needed in this book so there were no extra expenses for me. But for people who don't already own some of these tools may have some trouble with a few of the recipes in this book. But there are still plenty of great recipes that do not involve expensive appliances also.I read some reviews who dislike the fact that there are no images of the finished recipe product. I was concerned about this as well but the recipes are so very specific in the instructions and in the ingredient list, and the beginning of the book explains the author's personal definitions of the terms she uses so we know what she means in her instructions. So basically I am saying that it didn't turn out to be an issue of mine. These recipes really don't need step-by-step photos or finished product photos. I am a beginner with raw foods and "cooking" and as long as you pay attention to the instructions your will do very well. Also, the pages are in color and the colors are vibrant. I love the look of each page!I think this book deserves 5 stars, most definitely. Especially for the price.

There are many raw snack foods listed along with their health benefits. And, of course, organic is recommended whenever possible. The chapters lay out like this: Raw Snack Basics; Raw Snack Pantry & Kitchen Equipment Essentials; Raw Snack Prep 101: Learning How to "Uncook"; Super-Satisfying Raw Nut Milks, Shakes, Smoothies, and Frozen Fruit Creams; Fit And Fabulous Fruit And Vegetable Juices; The Snacks That Keep You Going: Energizer Bars, Balls, And Bites; Powerhouse Nut, Seed, And Fruit Blends; Raw Cereals And Delectable Fruit Parfaits; Vegetable Jolt: Crispy Chips, Zippy Dips, And Scrumptious Spreads; Chillin' Fresh, Cold Fruit And Vegetable Soups; Raw Confections: No-Guilt, Nutrient-Packed Candy and Cookies; Suggested Reading; Resources; Index. Doesn't that sound muy interesante?Sometimes, many of the ingredients...including nuts and seeds are not reasonably priced. Also, the energy required to run a dehydrator with no heat so that you don't destroy enzymes can be excessive.I will keep the book and revisit it...there is a lot to learn from it. Even if you're not a vegetarian, or a vegan or a "raw foodie" (what DO you call that??), you can still adapt in small ways to improve the benefit from the foods you eat.

What a wonderful book! Every recipe I have tried so far has been easy to make with delicious results. The book promotes a raw diet however these recipes can be used by anyone wishing to add healthful snacks to their routine. It also includes many alternatives to store bought energy bars and snacks that have chemicals, preservatives or corn syrup that you may not want in your diet. This book is worth having in your cookbook library!

Jerry Izenberg was a veteran boxing journalist and has many entertaining yarns to tell, and in Once There Were Giants he certainly tells them. The problem is that he tells them as more of a memoir than as a serious look at the era of heavyweight boxing from the 1960s to the 1990s.His prejudices in terms of who and what he wished to dwell are truly limiting. For a book that was supposed to begin with Sonny Liston, it spends far too many pages setting the stage for Liston's emergence and delving into the sordid history of the mafia and boxing. The last stanzas focus overwhelmingly on Mike Tyson, give short shrift to Evander Holyfield and are absolutely dismissive of Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe. It smacks very much as the observations of a cranky old man who only cares about what he cares about.Even within those limits, Izenberg is good, but not great. More words spent on secondary figures like Jerry Quarry or Earnie Shavers would have made this a much better book. Instead, he rambles on about the mafia or how his good pal so-and-so knew more about this business than anyone will ever know and things of that nature.Add to that some rather embarrassing grammatical errors and I must also ask where the editor was...My gold standard for works of this kind is Four Kings by George Kimball. Compared to that, this book gets a bronze.

I've been a big fan of the author since the 1970's but was a bit disappointed in this book. although there is a treasure trove of great material at his disposal, the author spends too many pages discussing events long before the main time frame of the book. like many writers of his generation, he seems obsessed with stories about the mob and how they operated in the "old days," many of which i'm sure are apocryphal.it's a shame more time wasn't spent on the epic fights of the era vs. glorified tales of the mob's influence on boxing in the 1930s and 1940s. once the book shifts focus to its main topic, however, it becomes highly readable and interesting, with the author's trademark humor in full bloom.all in all, a pretty good book but had the potential to be much better.

Great boxers in the heavyweight division are names that are recognized by even those who are not fans of the sport. Fighters like Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Joe Frazier, and George Foreman are just a few of the heavyweight champions who have left their mark both in boxing and in the world in general. That era when these and other great heavyweight boxers ruled the sport is chronicled in this terrific book by veteran writer Jerry Izenberg. There is a passage in the prologue that fits the general theme of the book and also expresses the feelings of not only the author but also many of the readers when Izenberg states that “…there will never again be a heavyweight cycle like the one that began when Sonny Liston stopped Floyd Patterson – and ended when Mike Tyson bit a slice out of Evander Holyfield’s ear.” This covers the 35 year period of 1962-1997 and Izenberg tells many great stories about many great fighters from that era. There is Sonny Liston, whom Izenberg states was the last fighter to be controlled by the Mob, a great account of all three classic fights between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. Noteworthy is that Izenberg believes their third bout, the “Thrilla in Manila”, “…was the greatest fight I ever saw. Hell, I think it was the greatest fight anyone saw.” Many who have seen it will echo that sentiment. Then even more great storytelling is in store for the reader as Izenberg tells about both Spinks brothers who held the crown, Leon and Michael and of course, Mike Tyson and all of the chaos surrounding him. This book is a breeze to read, especially for fight fans who remember the days when the heavyweight championship was a title that was held in reverence and was held by one man, not by several because of various organizations who claim to be the “one” who can declare the champ. The stories about these fighters, and some of the epic bouts they fought to either gain, lose or defend their championship are ones that boxing fans will treasure for a long time.I wish to thank Skyhorse Publishing for providing a copy of the book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A good book, much crisp and graceful writing, many sharp insights, but marred by extremely sloppy editing, which permitted unjustified repetition and failed to correct numerous annoying typographical errors. The presentation, therefore, is not worthy of the author.

Lots and lots of of anecdotal entertainment and behind-the-scenes history from the golden age of heavyweight boxing. My only complaint: a few glaring syntax and typo errors missed by the editor of the manuscript.

Jerry Izenberg is the best living sportswriter in the nation and has been for decades. He is insightful and readable. This is his tour de force. I plowed through this book in two days!

An insider's review and some personal memories of what was indeed the golden age of boxing.

Very good survey of the heavyweights from Sonny Liston to Evander Holyfield. There are a few historical errors, for example, Chuck Wepner did not knock Ali down with a right to the head, he stepped on his foot and hit him with a right to the body as Ali was falling. Also, Tyson did not really land any crunching punches on Bruce Seldon, he took a dive after Tyson missed,There were a few other errors also, and some possible errors in judgment, I was surprised he had Frazier ahead in the scoring in the second fight with Ali.He also doesn’t do Lennox Lewis justice, he belongs in the storied history of the giants. One of the best chapters in the book was the prelude where he talked about how the mob controlled boxing on and off for the first 60 years of the 20th century.Izenberg Is a very good writer, his conversations with Mike Tyson were fascinated also. Recommended. I give it four and a half stars because of the errors in history, otherwise it would be five.

great

It has certain gems in it. But no Laser Flip, Varial Heel, 360 Inward Heel, Nollie Heel, or really any nollie tricks for that matter. That's why it gets 4 stars instead of 5, a lot of the tricks I really wanted to learn just wasn't there.

Entertaining read, but not much to it. Very short read for the price. But then again, it's not learning a jet fighter. He did a great job writing in an easy and informative style, but not a lot of information.

This book taught me everything I needed to know about skateboarding. Everything from the basics of pushing off, to ollies, to very and slalom. If you need to know anything about skateboarding, this is the book for you

wow, now i am tony hawk. watch out tony hawk, i am now tony hawk

This is one the greatest skateboarding trick books I have read or looked into buying. My teenager son is all about the skateboarding but he is NOT a big reader. He devoured this book! The step by step pictures really helped so that he wasn't just reading the directions and tips and tricks but actually seeing what each part should look like. The mother in me was grateful to see that the book starts off with a chapter on safety and it even emphasized that pads restricting movement is a myth. It explains everything from what to expect your first time at a skate part to how to get into skateboarding competitively. I also liked the couple of pages devoted to jobs that involve the skateboarding field but aren't 'professional' skateboarding. I want my son to enjoy skateboarding and learn and enjoy all the tricks he can but I also want him to be safe and realistic. I believe "Mastering Skateboarding" does a great job at this. I am very pleased with this one!

Per Welinder is a legend in freestyle skateboarding who now runs Blitz Distribution. He founded Birdhouse Skateboards with Tony Hawk twenty years ago. He knows his stuff inside and out and the book he offers up here is incredible. It includes everything you need to know from building a board to doing tricks. The advice given is top-notch.That he got Bryce Kanights (Thrasher/SICK BOYS) to do the full-color photography is an added bonus which helps bring the instruction to life. Great new resource for skaters to learn the ropes. As the Tony Hawk quote from the back of the book claims: "I'm reassured to know that there are now high-quality instructions and tutorials for learning the tricks that we struggled with for so many years."Great stuff. Would make a good gift and would also be a good purchase for a parent who doesn't know where to begin with their kid. You know who you are. :)

Mastering Skateboarding is a great book for anyone who wants to skate, whether you're just learning or you know how and want to learn some tricks or technique. The first part of the book is devoted to basic riding, and it explains in detail how to start riding if you are a beginner. The book gives great step-by-step guides on many tricks, starting with the basics and going to very advanced tricks. The guides are very informative; the instructions have several steps, with a color photo for every step. This makes it much easier to understand exactly what the book is talking about. The authors also added a bit about skateboarding culture, how to act and a general guide of how not to make a fool out of yourself. There is also information on different styles of skateboarding - such as street boarding and vert boarding - a guide on deciding what kind of skateboard is best for you, and information you will need to tune-up your skateboard.All-in-all, the book is a great book for beginning skateboarders, and even many people who don't skateboard could feasibly enjoy reading Mastering Skateboarding.
