If you like the Strong's Concordance, then this could be a useful supplement. I wanted something compact that I could carry with me when I travel [I don't care very much for the electronic concordances that I have tried in the past]. I purchased this to use when I simply want to look up a Bible verse...and that is the key in determining whether or not you will like this: it is only a reference tool for finding Bible verses; its compact size is due in large part to the fact that the Hebrew and Greek Dictionaries have been eliminated from the volume. The only reason that I rate this at four stars instead of five is because it also eliminates a number of words that the editors feel the reader 'is not likely to use in searching'; I can understand not listing words like 'a, am, an, be, do, in, is, it', etc.; however, I think that too many significant words have been excluded, such as 'fathers, children, hand, hundred' and so on. However, even with these shortcomings, this volume is still both useful and convenient.

This little compact concordance boasts over 40,000 entries... which is both a plus and a minus. To give you a frame of reference, stack two VHS tapes, and that is almost exactly the size of this concordance. It is a little "thick," but it is paperback, so it is light. The definite "downside" is that in order to squeeze so many entries into such a small package... the font is amazingly small. So small in fact, that I printed out Gen. 1:1 on MS Word, and matched it to the font size in the concordance. The font size of this little concordance is 4.5 font!If you want to get some perspective on how small 4.5 is, do like I did, and copy Gen. 1:1 into your your Word Processor. Highlight the verse, then manually change the font to 4.5, then print the page. You will now see what you have to look forward to with this concordance.The font is so small that I have to take my glasses off (bifocals or reading glasses), and look at the page close-up. Nevertheless, I am okay with this when I am studying at home, since I often read without my glasses anyway. Furthermore, I ordered an additional concordance (also paperback) along with this one. It is the Strong's Handi-Reference Concordance (AMG Handi-Reference Series). Both books were "Used- Very Good" condition. I paid $.99 for the Nelson's, and $1.89 for the AMG. I will use the 4.5 font Nelson's at home, and take the AMG with me to Church.The AMG has approximately a 6.5 size font, which is almost 50% larger than the Nelson's. That is still small, but it is a lot easier on the eyes. I can read it without straining, and without having to remove my glasses. The AMG is slightly thinner, and slightly wider/taller.As I said, I got both very cheap, so I am happy with both. But if I had it to do all over, I would only purchase the AMG. It is amazing how much difference such a few points in font size can make.Additional Note: Both of these concordances are NOT exhaustive. Exhaustive (for those who don't know) means that the concordance lists every single Biblical occurrence of the word. As I stated at another review:"I am unsure how the editors choose which verses to include/omit, but the strength of a "Handi-Reference" concordance is that it is used for quick references (at Church, work, a Bible study, etc.), where you may be drawing a blank on a common or popular verse... but you can not remember where you read it. It is also helpful for people who need something a lot more in-depth than the concordance in the back of the average Bible... which, by the way, is also NOT exhaustive."

Compact, meaning it doesn't have "dictionaries" and other reference matter: just the way to find the major words in the verses of the bible. As it turns out, some of the references don't exist in all versions of the bible, which is interesting.

I love the fact that there is a compact version, I dont like relying on getting out my phone in church so this is great to have the option to pull out a smaller concordance. FYI the words are REALLY small

I use this concordance in my prison ministry. The ladies often ask a bunch of questions and I use this to guide them back to Scripture. Buyer beware: the font is TINY as it says. 5 point font is small. If you have poor vision, do not go for this no matter how compact.

This New Strong's Compact Concordance is excellent for my King James Version Bible. I find this Strong's Concordance to be very reliable since there is no corrupt Hebrew or Greek definitions.

Husband is doing a lot of Bible studying and he loves this. Wanted the paperback edition and says this is perfect.

There are a number of books on Pixar. I'm a big fan of Pixar, so I've read two of them. This one, and "The Pixar Touch" (and I'll soon read "Creativity Inc"). Of the two I've read, they couldn't be more different. "The Pixar Touch" follows the main creative leaders of Pixar, and talks about how they created all the technology and story-telling expertice, and then how the company made their first half dozen or so films. You do learn about Jobs and Lucas along the way, but the focus is on the movies and the creative talent. "Pixar And Beyond" isn't even really a story of Pixar, it's a story of Lawrence Levy (their CFO). And it covers how he came up with the companies first business plan, their financial model for creating animated films, recruited investment bankers, took the company public etc. And along the way we learn about the history of the stock market, how the stock market works, and a bunch of other financial topics.Note that I'm actually pretty interested in financial matters. Heck, I used to invest in Pixar back in the day. But even so, I found "Pixar and Beyond" to be a boring, laborious tale, while "The Pixar Touch" was fascinating and really fun. It of course depends somewhat on personal taste, but there you have my take on it.

Well written, full of humanity, and hard to put down, To Pixar and Beyond is an engaging read. I was surprised at the number of obstacles Levy and Pixar needed to overcome on the way to success. This one immediately shouldered aside the five or six other books I had open in my Kindle app; highly recommended, and not just for those interested in business.

My background in creative industry leads me into the investment in the digital sector. Recently I reconnect my initial passion in the film industry by investing in films and use the analytical model to approach the investment risk.I found this book during my search on the business insight in the entertainment industry. I highly recommend the analytical approach on the business insight during Pixar early monetization model. Nobody can think of throwing the only business model of Renderman licensing into monetizing ‘motion blur’ patent. Brilliant!The part of describing the tension on relationship with Disney and how to best use leverage and negotiation is also very insightful. I have similar experience like this. Be passionate about the deal but don’t be afraid of walking away from the deal!

Lawrence Levy has truly written a gem about his time @ Pixar and beyond. Having worked @ the Investment Bank that took Pixar public made reading Lawrence's account about it as CFO extra special. It was like I was there all over again.Describing his personal accounts of working with Steve Jobs, the ups and downs and finally success for Pixar made this book an incredible page turner.. It truly is an inspirational book for me and my entire family.What I really enjoyed was when Lawrence insisted that his team be included in the credits for Pixar films! THAT was indeed remarkable.I felt sad when I finished it because I wanted it to keep going. Going for a walk after reading it helped! ;>)

Levy's book is a good story with a hand full of important business take-a-ways. His simplification of the strategic needs of Pixar relative to establishing its future are great lessons. Additionally, their negotiations with Disney are another good lesson in facing both your opponents/partners/fears. Some additional insight into Jobs during a challenging stage of Jobs life.And, like a lot of business books there are a few solid, life long lessons.

A great book telling you so sometimes need boring people as they help you get the lifeline of a funding or translate your pixie dust to a molecular structure to be well received by the investors.Where past books about Pixar storytelling or creativity tell us about the captivating process of what Pixar gives to the world, this completes the job of what the would gave back - in terms of hard-won results. Focus and ingenuity were what helped he team to escape the trap of mild business ventures, and primed their prime channel of genius to what they truly wanted to excel at: true creative process.

Lawrence Levy is to blame for my lack of sleep last week. This book was for me a real page turner, as Levy narrates his move to Pixar, and his involvement with Steve Jobs and the folks at Pixar to make the leap from a long struggling startup to a mega force in the entertainment world - a company that would change the world.Levy has a very readable style of writing - casual, but not in a gee whiz sort of way that is all too common for insider books like this one - from non professional writers. Levy takes us behind the scenes of how Pixar was turned from a company with great potential in to the entertainment powerhouse of our generation. I knew a little about this from watching a DVD called Pixar Short Films Vol 1, but Levy provides so much more detail, particularly with regard to Steve Jobs (and his own) personal transformation through his involvement with Pixar, from both a creative and a business standpoint.I've met Lawrence at several Juniper mediation events, but do not know him, so it was especially fun for me to read about his motivations and more recent personal transformation from hi-tech/entertainment executive to working to help found and fund the Juniper (juniperpath.org) organization. A big thumbs up for a great story and a great read.

About the Author

The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche was born in Prussia in 1844. After the death of his father, a Lutheran minister, Nietzsche was raised from the age of five by his mother in a household of women. In 1869 he was appointed Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Basel, where he taught until 1879 when poor health forced him to retire. He never recovered from a nervous breakdown in 1889 and died eleven years later. If you're looking to read Nietzsche -- either superficially or deeply -- there are only 2 books you really need: Kaufman's Portable Nietzsche and Kaufman's The Basic Writings of Nietzsche.Of course, you're getting different works from both of these anthologies.If you're looking to read Thus Spake Zarathustra (as well as letters, Twilight of the Idols, the Antichrist, and selections from many of his other works), buy the Portable Nietzsche readerIf you're looking to read Beyond Good and Evil and the Geanology of Morals (or the Birth of Tragedy / Ecce Homo, etc.) buy the Basic Writings.Really, you SHOULD own both. One is certainly not a substitute for the other. However, if you're thinking about what to read first.... let me put it like this:Read Thus Spoke Zarathustra first if you're looking for something more laconic and literary (buy Portable Nietzsche)Read Beyond Good and Evil first if you're looking for something more aphoristic and philosophical (buy Basic Writings)All in all, I reference them both about the same.... and once you've worked your way through these you can touch The Will to Power.Good Luck!!! He really was brilliant man. Hopefully you won't be one of the many who have egregiously misunderstood what he was saying.

This anthology of works by Nietzsche includes "Thus Spake Zarathustra", "The Antichrist", "Twilight of the Idols" and "Nietzsche contra Wagner" in there entirety, as well as many letters, excerpts, notes and insights from translator/editor Walter Kaufmann. The translation is easy to read, and Kaufmann takes necessary liberties with the translation to make the book more understandable and reader-friendly to the English reader. He notes these liberties in the notes, and the information presented flows well.Nietzsche's works are arranged in the book in chronological order. As a reader, you are able to see him slowly slipping into an angry, troubled darkness which marked the last decade of his life. Whether taking on the state, Christianity, German philosophers and theologians, or Richard Wagner, Nietzsche exudes passion and intelligence that the translation effectively transmits to the reader. Many of his arguments against religion and Christianity (in particular - "The Antichrist") as well as his concept of the "superman" in "Thus Spake Zarathustra" underpin his consistent belief that man should not be held back by religion or state, and that "equal" isn't "fair". His philosophy that equality will drive man to the lowest common denominator in his abilities underpins most of his works.Nietzsche was a brilliant and troubled philosopher, and this anthology provides a great feel for the man and his works with superior editing, commentary and translation. If you want an intro, this should be strongly considered.

This is a great small collection of Nietzsche's works. I took this with me on a 7 month deployment overseas and it was great enjoying some of his best works without having to carry multiple books. The translation is the usual trusted Kaufmann, so it's hard to make this any better.

I haven't yet had a chance to read this book--the printing was too disappointing. I bought a hardcover to have a long term, good quality book--and the one I received from Amazon directly was like a mass market paper book (typical lightweight grey tissue like mass market paper) sandwiched between a hard cover. Returning and hope the next one will be better.

It's Nietzsche, what can I say? Walter Kaufmann wrote the best English translations of the bulk of Nietzsche's work. Although my university has a textbook rental system, I like to highlight and tag passages, so I bought this for a Nietzsche seminar. I <3 Nietzsche!

I absolutely enjoy the Portable Nietzsche and do take it with me and read it frequently to work and college.

This is one of my favorite selections of Nietzsche's works Walter Kaufmann. Kaufmann has the best translation of Thus Spoke Zarathustra. It is a great price of Amazon for this fantastic book.

I love this little hardcover book full of Nietzsche's writings. If you want to buy an intro to Nietzsche, I would recommend this little tome over the large paperback "Nietzsche's Basic Writings." The content, I think, is the same, but the format of this little book is so much better for carrying around and chewing on.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been this enthralled. I absolutely loved reading this book, what a great story. This would make a fantastic miniseries!The characters are still with me. I actually am writing this having just finished the book, and I already miss the people, good and bad.Incredible addition to the Clive Barker canon of imagination...I know I’m late to the game on this one. I’ve only read a few other Barker books, but now I’m motivated to read the rest! I’m excited because I have them to look forward to.I absolutely loved Coldheart Canyon, and I recommend it heartily.

Personally I am a fan of Mr. Barker for many reasons, but I am not a fan boy. I read this books years ago when it first came out and decided to read it again before writing a review.First this book is not the average thrill and kill book that people expect from a horror writer. For me this book is more about how fame, obsession and vanity are just as destructive as the sadistic pastimes of torture and murder. The writing is superb, the descriptions and imagery are vivid and evocative. Just as we have all come to expect from Mr. Barker.While the premise of Hollywood was not very appealing to me in the beginning, I did love the mentions of old Hollywood and the new twist on those stars who were taken too soon. Anyone who has watched any amount of reality TV in recent years knows that if Coldheart Canyon did exist it would be teeming with the plastic fame monsters who right now roam the streets of California looking for their next fix of stardom, drugs, sex or surgery.Also the Devil's Country/the Hunt for me was marvelous, if you have any imagination you can close your eyes and see the images for yourself. That is the one portion of the book that really sticks with me. Maybe that is also the most unnerving part of the novel. The idea that we are all trapped in a prison of our making constantly striving after that which will ultimately undo us.

I read the review of this book by a cpoupla folks before I purchased it....I am so very GLAD that I didn't heed them! It is a wonderful and refreshing Clive Barker story! In fact what strikes me as strange is that when I fell in love with his books about three years ago I never ONCE heard of Coldheart Canyon....but I am glad I finally read it! Its awesome, just the right length, and just like his older works intertwining the mystic and mundane superbly! With awesome characters I could revisit in another novel in anytime! I friggin love this book daresay as much as Imajica...in fact it has a semi similar vibe for me! BUY IT!!!!!

Not far into the book--maybe 200 pages or so--it feels as if all of the energy drains out of the prose; the marvelous premise runs this and the deliciously perverse characters are left with little of interest to occupy them, or the reader. Despite all of the sexual histrionics it feels strangely tame and forced, certainly not the sort of richly detailed exploration of decay and depravity of which Barker is capable. He's holding something back here, which is unfortunate in an overlong book.

Clive Barker is often categorized as a horror writer, and while he certainly uses some of the elements of the genre (ghosts, etc.), he is a far different writer from a Stephen King, Peter Straub or Dean Koontz. The worlds Barker creates are far more bizarre than anything you see in a standard horror novel; sometimes this works well, but other times, Barker's works are so strange that their very strangeness weakens his stories.In this case, however, Barker has done a fine job in creating his own version of a haunted house story. Having recently read King and Straub's Black House, as well as other older classic haunted house stories such as the Shining (by King) or the Haunting (by Shirley Jackson), I am familiar with the conventions, but Barker is successful in twisting these conventions into new directions.The haunted house in this case is located in an isolated canyon in Los Angeles. A former party house for silent film stars, it has been seeemingly abandoned for years, until a modern movie star retreats there while recovering from plastic surgery. The ghosts of the old stars are still here, drawn to a power within the house; also here is the house's owner, still alive and as young as when she was a silents star herself.The forces in the house are not so much driven by evil as by lust. This creates a sexual explicitness that may turn off some readers who are caught unaware, but it is essential in the context of this story. The main character is not so much threatened with death (although this is always a possibility) as with being seduced by the powers within the house.This is one of Barker's better efforts, a well-written work that - despite its length - I was able to finish in just a couple of reasonably idle days. If there is a flaw in the book, I think it is in the last 100 or so pages, which serve more as an extended epilogue than a true part of the story. Overall, this is a good book, however, and worth the effort for fans of horror or dark fantasy.

From evidence in the author's introduction, I do wonder if this book was more difficult to produce than his others. I guess it does lack the liquid flow of imagery and energy that some of his other pieces have; but, to be fair, he is puppeteering an immense cast in this work, and some of the clumsiness almost goes hand-in-hand with that effort. Still, it was a page-turner, and had both Barker's shuddering horrors and his dry humour in spades.The book's format is really interesting. A climax comes early, and then Barker follows the characters well into the aftermath. The climax is so savage it's almost as if he's holding you afterwards, comforting you, soothing you; certainly the characters soothe each other. A reference to human sexuality? Well, maybe. The book does has its fair share of explicit sex. And if you don't know anything about the artist Hieronymus Bosch, you will at the end of this volume.I definitely recommend this book.

Although I felt it a little slow at times, this book is another Barker masterpiece. I especially enjoyed the plus size, ace representation.

I wish we could do 1/2 stars because it's not that I didn't like it, but was less than OKas a teenage gay guy growing up in Ohio in the 70's and 80's, I dreamed of going to New York City and ESPECIALLY to Studio 54. I would look in all the newspapers and magazines for any of the photos of people dancing and partying there.In the years after I watched documentaries and films and read so much about 54 in its heyday. I was very excited to see that this book had been written about the restart of 54 that I preordered it.While some interesting stories about the club and the beautiful people that partied there, author Mark Fleishman always feels the need to insert stories of his own partying that really takes away from the inside that the book promises. And hearing so many stories of the women he was able to bang became tiresome. About 3/4s of the way thru the book - Studio 54 is sold the book becomes Fleischman's autobiography. Which becomes VERY tedious.I bought the book to read about Studio 54 and that's what I would have liked to have ended the last 50 pages of the book with.A let down

Ok at first. Good stories to share. As Chapters progressed, it becomes less and less about Studio, and more and more about Mark. Guess he never ran out of drugs and available sex, but ran out of Studio stories!

I have to blame myself for this one. I was curious as to what it was like visiting Studio 54. I've always been fascinated by the history of it and what made it such a good time to such big names. When I bought "Inside Studio 54" I imagined hearing all the juicy stories and genius planning that made the club what it was. This book ended up being that- just way too much of it. If you're interested in all the sex and cocaine the owner of the club did, then this is your book. And while there's nothing wrong with those stories, I'd like a little more than just that. This book could be cut in half and would be much, much better.

Good story, but it got a bit boring. I love details as much as the next person, but this was a bit much. Give me details of the goings on inside the club. That would make this sensational

Mark Fleischman's book gives readers a front row seat to the hedonistic lifestyle of the decadent 70's, 80's, and even part of the 90's in US culture that was epitomized by the Studio 54 scene. It's hard to believe that Fleischman himself dived so deeply and emerged from this hedonistic culture unscathed, or relatively unscathed, but I suppose that is what continues to be the allure of living life on the edge--you might just get away from it if you are astute enough to know when to leave the party, or are fortunate enough to experience an epiphany while at a luxurious island rehap. Really? Despite the subtle subtext that all of us who lived in these decades wish we could have kept the party going on forever with no reprecussions, this book manages to be endlessly entertaining and mildly addictive.

This book was OK. The author tended to get to be repetitive, particularly when he was describing his metamorphosis away from drugs and drinking. There were multiple pages I skipped over without losing the story line. By the end of the book, I was glad it was over.

Fun memories of the 70s and the people who were having much more fun than I was!

Gilbert Morris brings the characters of the Old Testament to life. The ways of life of the Chosen People of God is detailed in their nomadic lifestyle. Their human weakness and never ending faith in God is the source of their strength.Joseph in my mind from Sunday School seemed to be bullied by is older brothers. Morris portrays him a the spoiled favored son of Jacob a tattletale and trouble maker. Upon sale into slavery with God at his side, intelligence, morals and ability to understand dreams allowed him to rise to a high member of Egyptian hierarchy thus fulfilling his childhood dream.Reading is my passion and I read all types of books. However; Gilbert Morris is becoming a go to author when looking for a good book. He hasn't let me down yet.

I'm so glad I was introduced to this series via Book Gorilla. True to the Biblical stories of Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and more, Gilbert Morris makes the characters and stories come alive. If I were still teaching religion classes, the Lions of Judah books would be required reading. While each book could be read as a stand-alone, reading the series in order was a treat. I am easily annoyed with Kindle books that contain multiple spelling and formatting errors. This series is remarkably "clean"--I may have found 2 typos in four books. I appreciated the quality of the Kindle edition, as well as the engaging way these books are written. If you've tried to read these Old Testament stories in the Bible, but "didn't get it," try this book! If you enjoy Bible fiction, you'll enjoy this entire series.

When I realized this book would be about Joseph, I must admit I was somewhat disappointed as I knew the story of Joseph so well. Or so I thought. I knew the STORY of Joseph but not the GLORY of God portrayed throughout. It touched my heart to realize the intricate plan of God in Joseph's life and trials and about the wonder of how His hand is personally involved in our lives. And the marvelous story of forgiveness. These books have made me have a whole new love and thirst to read the Old Testament and to see the spiritual revelations contained therein.

This series makes scripture pop. I have not been reading for many years but Gilbert Morris as well as Lynn Austin are one of the best writers ever. After reading these books and you read scripture the characters come to life.

Gilbert Morris seems like a bit of a nut to me. That or his Bible is very very different that any I have read.

All the books are good. Hard to put down. Looking forward to the last 2 books. You have to take the stories for what they are worth. When you read them, you will know what I mean.

This entire series of books by Gilbert Morris is absolutely outstanding. Some of the books include fictional figures, but they fit into the narrative nicely. Altogether a terrific read. If you like biblical accounts you will really enjoy these books.

Gilbert Morris has created yet another great masterpiece! Those familiar Bible characters are enriched by his magical retelling of their story in God's timeline of history. Thank you for making my Bible come alive!
