Review

Mark Moyer, Wall Street Journal“[Haqqani's] purpose isn't to narrate his service as ambassador or score political points but to outline the contours of American relations with Pakistan over time, with a final chapter depicting the 2011 collapse as a new instance of historical trends. While one might desire a fuller accounting of his ambassadorship, the book covers its chosen ground superbly.”Richard Leiby, Washington Post“A solid synthesis of history, political analysis and social critique."Lisa Curtis, National Interest“If you want a better understanding of why U.S. policy has failed so miserably in Pakistan, you should read Husain Haqqani's latest book… Fast-paced and highly readable… Haqqani has provided a well-documented and interesting account of the policy disconnects between the United States and Pakistan. His book should make a tremendous contribution toward grounding U.S. policy toward Pakistan in more realistic assumptions that will help avoid future crises between the two countries.”Kirkus Reviews, starred review“[An] insightful, painful history of Pakistani-American relations… Demonstrating no mercy to either party, Haqqani admits that Pakistan verges on failed-state status but shows little patience with America's persistently shortsighted, fruitless policies.”Library Journal“Haqqani uses his wealth of personal experience to present a detailed account of the genesis and evolution of U.S.-Pakistani relations over the last 60 years… The book is a useful resource for academics, journalists, and policymakers at all levels.”Publishers Weekly“Insightful if disturbing... Making it clear why he is persona non grata in his homeland, Haqqani concludes that military aid has undermined Pakistan's democracy, converting it into a rentier state living off American money rather than its people's productivity.”Asian Age“The book is part memoir, part searing indictment of Pakistan's flawed strategy of using jihadis to secure its strategic space… [Haqqani proves] himself to be a diligent and tireless researcher who backs up almost every stinging commentary on Pakistan's journey since independence to the present day, with fact.”

Haqqani, former Pakistani Ambassador to the United States and currently persona non grata (extremely non grata) from his homeland, denounced as a traitor and accused of betraying the Pakistani military in favor of the United States, has no illusions about who runs his native land and who benefits from it. While "Magnificent Delusions" may seem over the top in places the more one reads about and studies South Asia the more one realizes that his book is very much on the money.Haqqani writes that Pakistan has had an inflated view of its importance on the world stage since 1947 and expects the United States to fund and arm it. At the same time U.S. intelligence and political leaders refused to see that the Pakistani military was created, trained and deployed for war with India particularly to force the return of Kashmir to Pakistan. They continued to tell themselves that Pakistan was part of a bulwark against the USSR. In reality the Pakistani enemies list started and stopped with India although there were always belligerent noises toward Israel. The pro forma pronouncements against the Soviets in Afghanistan were mainly to keep the flow of funds moving from Washington. In recent years, their erstwhile proxies (Pakistan Taliban, al Qaeda, etc.) have turned their guns on the Pakistani state itself. While the sorry tale of the huge increase in U.S. military aid to Pakistan after soviet invasion of Afghanistan doesn't need retelling, one unintended consequence was increasing funds for the development of an "Islamic bomb" in Pakistan. The Saudis contributed billions to fight the Taliban and al Qaeda operations while the United States matched much of it. There was so much money sloshing around with essentially no oversight or control from the donors it was easy to surreptitiously transfer hundreds of millions of dollars to the nuclear program.Well written and told by a real insider.

I'm trying to gain insight into events in Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan. I first read Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001 by Steve Cole which is a well researched, critical historical review of the history of the CIA. After reading the chapters on Afghanistan I realized I couldn't fully appreciate Afgani history until I understood Pakistani history which led me to read FREEDOM AT MIDNIGHT by Dominique Lapierre and Larry Collins. FREEDOM AT MIDNIGHT seems to be a great historical review of the breakup of the British empire of India into India and Pakistan.I wanted more insight into Pakistan and happened to come across Magnificent Delusions. I haven't finished it yet, but can say so far that if you're trying to gain insight to the US relationship with Pakistan this is a great place to start. These books are not for conspiracy theorists. They are well written historical accounts.I took off one star because I'm not really a fan of Mr. Haqqani's writing style. I guess you could argue that he isn't an author, he's a ambassador and therefore I should be tolerant of his style.

Extremely well written, thought provoking piece of literature on the complex and fraught with difficulties relationship between the U.S. and relatively new nation of Pakistan. Reading this book at times leaves you feeling incredibly frustrated with many of the political figures involved on both sides as a sort of domino effect takes hold on the region and the world as violent events unfold. Especially prescient is the author's first hand knowledge of the relationship and insider information from meetings with top officials in the Pakistani government, military and intelligence services. One can see the trajectory and shaping of public opinion towards the U.S. as hatred boils over in the country and leaders make incendiary remarks and push conspiracy theories. Highly recommended book for all interested in the topic and especially those working between the two nations.

I thought I was pretty much up to speed on world events but this book blew me away and I had to read it twice for its insight into Pakistan politics. While much has been written about Pakistan's shadow government I was unaware of the depth of both it and the front government's total duplicity in dealing with America from the cold war to the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan, the terrorists and nuclear proliferation. That the US administrations only come to realize Pakistan duplicity at the end of their terms and that replacement administrations continuously start from scratch on the basis of trust was an eye opener. Unlike our cold war dealings with the USSR we have had no continuity on Pakistan foreign policy. Another revelation was the shadow government sponsorship of popularized anti Americanism to be used as a bargaining chip to get more aid. Purportedly this was to subdue the hatred that was in fact state sponsored long before drones. The extent of the influence and power of Islamism in Pakistan was another revelation as I had always thought of Pakistan as one of the more secularized Moslem countries. But Islam was intended to be the unifying basis of its existence from the beginning. The leadership even harbored thoughts of an Islamic hegemony under Pakistan leadership. Pakistan's atomic bomb was funded by Saudi Arabia on the basis of it being Islam's bomb as opposed to Pakistan's bomb. That is the origin of today's threat of obtaining the bomb from Pakistan by Saudi Arabia as a counterweight to Iran's coming bomb. While the fear of India and the potential of a Pashtunstan has long been known, the book makes clear that those are the central overriding forces behind all Pakistan foreign policy objectives to the exclusion of everything else. Those objectives are totally out of synch with US national security objectives and have been since the formation of Pakistan. Both countries' foreign policies have been operating in parallel universes hence the title "Magnificent Delusions". This a great read, well written and well sourced.

Such a good book to help negotiators that are up and coming! I will keep this as a valuable resource throughout my new career as a negotiator. It is so helpful.

I have used this book for several papers and research projects. I have seen the author speak live and she is very interesting and knowledgeable.

Very easy read with foundation on debate and conflict resolution.

I bought this book for a class in conflict resolution and negotiation and we only used the book for 5 pages. I haven't read the whole thing yet and I'm hoping that when I take the negotiation class we will have a need for it then as well

As this book comes from the perspective of nonviolent change agents and "alternative dispute resolution", it is focussed on strategies of collaboration, rather than competition. That means its perspectives are not all about winning so much as about win/win. As our world grows more crowded, intercultural conflicts sprout up everywhere and ever more quickly, this approach to the intractable polarization of the day is the only one with hope for success. It's worth every penny for the clear writing and useful ideas.

I'm sorry the previous reviewer found the book disappointing. It was not intended to be a basic book on negotiation. For that, I recommend the classic book Getting to Yes and the books that followed it such as Getting Past No. We tried to make clear on the back cover that this book is for those cases where the situation in which you are negotiating is not stable, in which case you need to apply the basic negotiation skills but ADD in a lot of attention to context AND use other tools such as dialogue processes in coordination with negotiation. This book does lay out steps for managing the complexities AROUND negotiations in unstable settings. If you use it with the tools from Getting to Yes and other books that focus on what happens at the table, you will have a pretty good set of tools for dealing with complicated negotiations. There is more to be written about this topic, but with a 90 page limit on the little books, it just hits the basics. Jayne Seminare Docherty

GREAT ! GOT THIS BOOK FOR A PEACE CLASS I'M TAKING NEXT MONTh SEPT 2014 GOT itSOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! quick

I originally purchased this book with a feeling that it would help me become a better negotiator and that it would have some steps that outline effective negotiating strategies. After reading the book I was left with a sense of disappointment because the only thing that I can appreciate from this book is the author's focus on "negotiating context" which is what this book should have been called. It seems that explaining and understanding what "context" is , was the focus of this book. Basic negotiations are not really covered in this book if at all, at least not to the extent that a novice such as myself can use. Not a good book for a novice negotiator. In the end you get what you pay for here. THE BOOK COSTS $5. THE END.
