This book was written for me! I feel like I’m having one to one counseling with someone who really understands what I’ve been dealing with. If you were sexually abused, and don’t know what to do – order your copy of this book. The cover of the book is just like the ending of The Tale and you’ll understand it when you read the book.

Having watched Sharyn over many years faithfully prepare the material that is presented in this book I know it was done with the utmost care and respect for those she was caring for. It is a gift to have all this preparation offered so generously to those of us who have suffering clients and may be suffering ourselves. This book offers not only concrete material and exercises but the hope that life can change, become lighter and less a secret. Cannot wait to pass this on to others that are still looking for their "healing steps".

As a survivor, as well as a body worker, I strongly recommend Healing Steps. As a survivor, I found the book easy to understand, supportive, encouraging and powerful. I loved Healing Steps. It’s hard to read about this topic, but I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about what my clients are going through and how to best help them. I'm an advocate at an emergency shelter in the Bay Area working with human trafficking and domestic violence victims, women and children. I'm thankful because I know what to say and how to love and work with them on their current path.Be a friend or a sister or a mother or whatever and understand sexual abuse so you can support someone who may be struggling. I learned a lot about myself as well in terms of my relationships and my struggles of being a woman in this day and age. You will learn a lot in this easy to read book and you will be doing something really helpful for someone who has been abused.

Sharyn covers such topics as the abuser, the effects of abuse on one's sexuality, relationships, and self-esteem. She leaves nothing out, and uses delightful humor to ease the heaviness of this work. I was impressed that she addressed the notion of forgiveness, and whether it is necessary for healing. I found this book to be very user friendly. I highly recommend it to both therapists and survivors, alike. It is a book that has something to offer women who have just begun their healing journey, and those who have been at it for a while. It also offers therapists very useful tools for working with their clients who bear the pain and scars of abuse. This would be good for an upper division course in systematics for biology majors and for professionals too. I like the crisp, clear sentences that appear to have been carefully thought out before commitment to paper/file. Even the package, the pages and covers, are aesthetically pleasing. One critic wrote "Not a book for a biologist wanting to understand systematics" but it is this comment itself that fails the mark.

Dr. Schuh did a deep revision of the previously Systematic books.This book must be part for systematics or want to improve in this area.I recommend it together with Willey's Phylogenetic book.

An extremely informative introduction to systematics. Breaks down foundational information/concepts in a way that makes them easy to understand and apply.

I added the "?" as this is very much an account of the narrow cladistic-phylogenetic approach to a vast subject, so the title could be misleading. Not a book for a biologist wanting to understand systematics, but rather a text for a graduate student working with such approaches.

This book was written back in 1930 but there are still a lot of gems to be found, especially for beginning investors.What the author describes as speculation is really, today, just investing that is a little more risky than buying a stock for the dividends. He describes how to interpret financial statements, how the market works, and what to look for in industrial and railroad stocks. He also discusses trading in unlisted securities and investing in options.Sure the book is old, but it is still very valuable.

Excellent, closely-written text illustrating timeless investment principles from interesting pre-1930 business and investment case histories.

Carret has the longest track record of beating the general markets over the long term with a CAGR of 13% over 55 years. This books is a great companion to Security Analysis by Ben Graham showing the central concept of buying securities when undervalued. In this book speculation is not the same definition as gambling or by Ben Graham, but in essence intelligent investing. Those who find this book to be "outdated" have the problem of not understanding the concepts of the book and wish to be spoon fed examples applicable to today's companies verbatim. In response to a previous review of a "veteran investor" who is not one given that the person "day trades", this book is not applicable to today's gamblers and is very helpful to those who are investors. This also applies for Security Analysis.

Has some applicable info, but a lot of its outdated like reading the tape. For the seasoned vet I can't find a reason to buy this. For someone just starting out, you could learn something but there are many more books out there that are newer and more revelant. I personally like any of William O'Neils books for long term investing, as for day trading I like the work of John Person who has two books available last time I checked. (Both good reads)

Few keep the track record over an extended time period so one conclusion is that he or she just happened to be long or short the asset proved right to be long or short at a certain time. Philip Carret (1896 - 1998) cannot be accused of being a one hit wonder.He was the founder (in 1928) of the Pioneer Fund which he ran for 55 years, during which an investment of $10,000 became $8 million. Warren Buffett said of him that he had "the best long term investment record of anyone I know". (This is actually the longest measured successful period, confirmed by the book "The World's 99 Greatest Investors".)However, he was not off to a good start since the fund lost money in the stock market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression that followed, but from the mid-1930's Carret had an amazing performance. How many would have stayed with his/her investment philosophy after negative returns for such a long time?Two years after starting the fund ''The Art of Speculation", was published. It was originally written as a series of articles for Barron's in 1927 and described the process he used for his investing. He was around 30 years writing these articles/book and starting the fund. To keep one's head cool living through the mother of all bullmarkets is clearly an achievement in itself, especially when being in the early 30's.Keep in mind that Benjamin Graham's Security Analysis was published in 1934. My guess is that The Art of Speculation meant a lot to Mr. Graham and you could argue that the contents of the two books are rather similar. However Carret's book is clearly the lighter version. The good news then is that this book is a much easier read, and also I think it makes some very good observations in the end. The text is obviously dated and irrelevant in some instances and sometimes the author is a bit slow to make obvious points.The book is beautifully wrapped up in the last chapter with "Twelve commandments for the speculative investor". These and his comments have travelled well since they were written. My top 4 are below.* At least once every six months, reappraise every security held;* Seek facts diligently, advice never;* Borrow money sparingly and only when stocks are low, money rates low and falling and business depressed;* Set aside a moderate proportion of available funds for the purchase of long-term options on stocks in promising companies whenever available.The author's intro: Successful speculation requires capital, courage and judgment. The speculator himself must supply all three. Natural good judgment is not enough. The speculators judgment needs to be trained to understand the multitudinous facts of finance. It is the hope of the author that this book can be of assistance in that connection.I agree with his statement and hope that many more read this wonderful book.This is a review by investingbythebooks.com

This book is really well written and very easy to follow. It just wasn't what I thought it would be; it's more of a history of Jewish-ness - like, what does it mean to be Jewish at different places and times in antiquity - sometimes told out of sequence, than it is a history of "the Jews" as a social, political and geographic tale. As someone who is not Jewish I felt like I was missing a lot of references and meaning in the discourse about what it means to practice Judaism. Not a criticism of the book or of Schama at all, it just wasn't 100% for me and that's okay.

What I most like about Schama’s book was the emphasis on the tangible. He concentrates on archeological discoveries, surviving papyrus letters and fragments, the ruins of ancient synagogue, their styles, locations and decorations, in other words, things that can be seen, felt, read. He does not start the history with Abraham, Moses and similar mythic characters for whom there is no real evidence. Since he deals mainly with the tangible, the history does not start as early as one might have thought, but starts early enough, at around 1000 B.C.E., and follows the Jews through Hellenistic, Roman, and Medieval Ages up until nearly the 16th century.One question that always comes to mind when reading Jewish history is how did this particular group survive when just about all other cotemporaneous religions and ethnicities disappear ages ago. Schama stresses the great advantage literacy gave the Jews for enduring cohesively through two Temple destruction, numerous exiles, attempted annihilations, forced conversions, and other scourges. Literacy seems always to have been encouraged. After all, even Yahweh himself was depicted as literate, inscribing the Ten Commandants himself and tagging Belshazzar’s wall. What other early gods sent missives to their people? I don’t recall off the top of my head Astarte, Baal, Zoroaster, Zeus depicted as reading and writing; usually their intentions were interpreted by oracles, omens and the like. But the laws of the Jews (unlike, say, the Moabites) were transcribed early on and apparently could be read a wide range of the populace. As early as the eighth century B.C.E., even heavy laborers carving a water conduit left inscriptions strongly suggesting they were literate. And from twenty-five centuries ago survive the letters of a Jewish mercenary at a faraway post to his family back home. The book has many more such examples.Simon Schama is a noted British lecturer and TV documentarian. He has a pleasant, conversational manner of speech, and he attempts to infuse this manner into his writing. So his sentences often have asides, phrases and comments through the use of commas, parentheses, dashes, quotation marks and italics. The result is that, for a history, his style seems chatty. This chattiness might be off-putting to some, but I found it pleasant, like a friend telling a story.

It goes without saying that this book is intellectually superior and informative in areas not familiar to many who will read it. The greatest virtue is Schama's writing though. Perhaps it's from seeing him on TV many times, but his tone is always that of a friendly personal conversation with the reader. Although his information is passing from a far higher level to a lower one, he never talks down. Further, Schama has often shown a level of subtle wit in his work that is the best of its sort since Gibbon. It's very difficult to think of a historian who combines information and enjoyment for the reader nearly as much.

Epic in scope. Bold and brave in confronting head-on all the ugly prejudices that the Jews have endured over the ages.Exhibit A? All that sheer nonsense about Jews killing Christians to make Matzo Soup, etc, that led to the rapacious, deadly pogroms is deconstructed, along with other myths that Christians believed for millennia in justifying their robbery, confiscation of property, and outright murder of the Jews.Myth and origin is at the heart of Schama's brilliant book. There are times he has a wicked sense of humor at the wonderment of what the wandering jews have suffered, survived, and accomplished. His journey thru history takes us from the earliest known days of the religion, the Diaspora, it's fatal union with the Christian elements over the Dark- Middle Ages, as well as it's relations to Islam. His followup is likely to be as good if not better.

One can easily be forgiven for assuming that there's no "new" way to present Jewish history, but Simon Schama has done it in this book. The focus of "The Story of the Jews" is the Torah and Talmud and how the Jewish people developed their consciousness, observances and traditions in light of those works. Ranging from Persia to England, Schama describes how Jewish communities mingled the demands of religion with the demands of the various social and political environments they lived in. The writing is superb: flowing and touched with humor as well as with emotion. It is a book to read again and again.

I find this book the best one describing the history of my nation.Although I, as a Jew in Israel, leaned and new much about the history of the Jews, Schama added so many facts I never heard about.Still reading the first Volume (in Hebrew translation p. 405) I new nothing about the great Jewish city on the Nile - Yeb were they build a Temple... I knew very little about the great importance of the archives in Cairo and Alexandria and how they transfer to us today so many important, personal and nationwide, fact during hundreds of yeas.Schama story is based not on ideas, it is based on archaeological findings from all over the globe which makes the reader more confident in the truth of the story.Schama does not lecture the story, he describes the fact like a history novel... Grade 1-3-In this transitional reader, eight-year-old Tommy, a born collector, needs $10 to purchase a "magic marble" from an older boy. Spencer tells him that it has a net at its center that catches bad dreams. The gullible boy's unsuccessful schemes for getting the marble include picking flowers from his mother's prize rose garden to sell to a neighbor and trading his little brother's snake for it. However, when Spencer makes fun of his sibling, Tommy finally decides that the magic marble is not worth the trouble. It's unlikely that this slight story line will hold readers' interest, and while marbles still hold a certain fascination for this age group, they are way down on a list headed by Gameboys and Pok mon cards. Rudimentary black-and-white cartoons capture the characters' moods but occasionally appear out of proportion. Overall, Fletcher's book lacks the humor or adventure of Barbara Park's "Junie B. Jones" series or Mary Pope Osborne's "Magic Tree House" books (both Random). Racked with guilt, Tommy has a bad dream that night, which reveals the marble to be a fraud. Fletcher ably captures the affection and the squabbling between siblings, and he dusts the chapter-book text with plenty of dry humor. Today's children may have trouble relating to a story that ends with a game of marbles (does anyone play marbles these days?), but they'll still find lots to enjoy and think about. Tommy and his little brother want to buy a big special marble from a tough kid down the street. But first, they need to find out how to get the money - without trying to sell mom's prize roses! His brother and he find a snake and try to make a trade with that. Several episodes fill the hunt to get such an exciting marble. Each episode is its own chapter and seems to end with Tommy getting into trouble.A nice introduction to chapter books, because the chapters are kept short. Furthermore, kids can relate to Tommy's adventures because the logic he uses is common for 9 year olds. This book is a slight departure from Fletcher's usual intermediate novels but is none the less enjoyable.Why 4 stars?:I liked this book from a teacher's standpoint because of its value as an introductory chapter book and realistic characters (something found in all of Fletcher's books), however, I didn't find the story to be very interesting. This could keep kids from continuing in it and getting a negative feeling about chapter books. Still, most children will still enjoy it and so it does belong in a classroom. It is already in mine.

This was purchased as a gift for our grand nephew who lives overseas. It is perfect... a nicely kept used book that was very reasonably priced and especially fun for him! His grandparents had suggested it for him.

This is an enjoyable easy chapter book, ideal for a second grader. The AR level is 2.6. Students with a younger sibling will particularly relate to the situations with Tommy and his younger brother Bradley.
