A lot of key details are highlighted in these summaries of notorious cases – details that might often have been lost to the reader in full-length books about each individual crime. The spot of blood on the OUTSIDE of an undergarment; the fact that a victim was only partially covered with a blanket; the fact of excess postage being used to mail letters to reporters or police – are all the kinds of details that often got lost in voluminous accounts – but that Douglas perceptively brings to the fore here.Perhaps his weakest chapter is his first one dealing with Jack the Ripper. Douglas advances what might be a bit of a contradiction when he says on the one hand that the Ripper had to be someone normal and controlled enough to walk about the Whitechapel area and to approach a few of his victims without arousing fear or suspicion – while on the other hand Douglas says that at least the last killings committed by the Ripper were indicative of someone acting in an insane frenzy.Douglas does present a run-down of some of the “usual suspects” in the Ripper murders, and rules many of the more famous ones out as being fancifully conjured dramatis personae by other authors. However, you won’t find any mention of Walter Sickert, the noted painter, included in this list. Patricia Cornwell positively advanced Sickert as the perpetrator in her 2002 book. But this book by Douglas was written in 2000.So Douglas also didn’t have access to the mitochondrial DNA analysis that Cornwall sponsored and that pointed to Sickert as having penned at least one of the letters claiming to be from “Jack.” While there’s been a lot of evidence undermining Cornwall’s case against Sickert as the actual murderer – the DNA results do suggest that Sickert, who was fascinated by the crimes, might have sent bogus letters as a way of involving himself vicariously with the sensational killings.Douglas does here repudiate the conclusions he came to regarding the identity of the Ripper on an old TV special hosted by Peter Ustinov. In this book, he quickly throws another candidate forward as the likely perpetrator – but in such a hit-and-run fashion that this chapter is unlikely to appeal to readers who have made a more extensive study of the Ripper.Most of the following chapters are more acute though. Douglas advances many telling details in the Lizzie Borden case. The only exception I take to his analysis of this crime is his complete dismissal of the solution that was offered in the 1975 film starring Elizabeth Montgomery. Douglas finds that solution improbable and actually almost unthinkable given the mores of the times. However, I found the Montgomery film to present an ingenious means of effecting the crime – and to be a generally brilliant must-see movie for anyone interested in “The Legend of Lizzie Borden.”Douglas is at his best in the last chapter involving the JonBenet Ramsey murder. Although he was briefly hired by the Ramsey parents to find exonerating evidence when so much of the public press was against them – Douglas seems to be impartial and his observations valid.In each chapter, Douglas suggests how the investigation of the case might have been better conducted, especially in its early phases. These suggestions are usually just common sense and probably won’t add much that the reader didn’t already know. But overall, this is a fascinating book by someone who has keen insights to offer into the criminal mind.

This is a very interesting book with insights and observations from a number of cases that have never been resolved. In a nutshell:Pros:Good summaries of interesting casesSome additional info/evidence that I'd not read or heard elsewhereQuick to the point applying his insights--easy to see/follow if you know his other booksCons:Some cases could probably stand to have a little more detailHe includes some cases and excludes others that should/could have been included--this might have been more effective as a series of books grouped either by timeline or type of crime, etc.It's an easy read but like his other books, it's blunt and graphic. Could easily upset some people.On a final note, his handling of the Ramsey case struck me as odd. He concludes the parents are innocent but based on the intimacy of the crime and some of the details it seems obvious (if you know his beliefs and methods) that the culprit was intimate with the family. That should narrow the list of suspects considerably but Douglas leaves it hanging. Or could he be saying that the parents knew who did it and covered for them? Is that where that very strange ransom note came from?

This is engrossing.I especially enjoy reading how a profiler describes the possible killer, the kind of psychological characteristics that s/he probably has, and even physical characteristics. Such reasoning based on science and experience beats wild guesses or good descriptive passages in fiction, because you know that this is real.While it is not possible to confirm that the real killers are indeed who the author deduces to be, this is a satisfying read, and makes me even more respectful of such professionals.

It's like having these cases analyzed by Sherlock Holmes, except now he's a hardboiled detective from Long Island. Yet never lacking compassion and empathy. There was only one point where I disagreed with his assessment of a particular in a case, and there it turned out I was wrong.To be fair, there was one point where I felt he contradicted a hint he'd established earlier in his discussion of the Lindbergh Baby case. But nobody hits a home run at every bat, and, plus, that "hint" may have just been inserted to build tension.Ten stars out of ten!

The book is pretty good, although I didn't care for the first part on Jack the Ripper. I rarely say this, but the first part is almost too detailed, pontificating a bit much - more due to his writing style than anything else. I almost stopped reading the book, but was glad I didn't because the rest of it is pretty good, and he talks about the following cases in a much more succinct organized manner. The Jon Benet Ramsey section is well done, although I thought he left out a glaring piece of analysis regarding the brother. Good information for a "crime buff" or anybody just interested in True Crime/Serial killers, etc. I recommend it.

Although the theft occurred 18 years in the past, the memory still pains Jack Cranston. Three groups want to find the cask and the jewels, King Richard II, the followers of the French King, and a particularly nasty king of the London underworld.Athelstan figures out the location and the identity of the murderer. P.C. Doherty knows how to weave a complicated tale and place it in a realistic setting, the filthy streets and alleys of underworld London. The descriptions of this underworld and the ghastly people who inhabit it are vivid.

I'm getting very attached to the "Little Friar" and the Coroner of London. I don't know how many books are in this series, but I think I've read them all. Not only do I love reading these novels, a guilty pleasure, I can compensate for the guilt by learning English history.This one in the series adds some double plot twists and the addition of an unusual killer, making it an enjoyable read. And gotta love God bless and the goat Thaddeus.

I struggled quite a bit with this latest installment. I loved the premise and was excited to dive into the book, but it was slightly repetitive and got bogged down in a couple of places. The prose seemed much more stilted than in the past (the conversations between Sir Jack and Athelstan don't feel as though they're occurring between two very close friends) and this made the book feel "off" to me.Regardless, I have no doubt I'll be back for the next book. This one just missed the mark for me.

It pains me to give Paul Doherty a low rating, but the last couple of books I have read seem to have more than their share of gratuitous violence and terrible characters. His books are always violent, with an emphasis on the dark, dirty and immoral aspects of history, but these have gotten to be too much, with too few redeeming qualities. Although I will miss the central characters, I doubt I will read another of Mr. Doherty's books.

Paul Doherty has the rare talent of being able to meld actual history with a gripping mystery. His characters are real as are his descriptions of daily life during the period.

I am a great fan of Doherty and especially of the Athelstan series. While I enjoyed reading this particular book, there was a good deal of repetition of points already made more than once or twice and in describing the filth and unsavory characters of London's more insalubrious neighborhoods. Also, the comic relief usually provided by Athelstan's fractious parishioners was all but absent. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book and recommend it with some reservation.

Good read, well written with great descriptions. Doherty always delivers a good story. It is obvious who the murderer is, but the reason why is a bit obscure. I recommend this book.

Paul has brought me back in the fold. Just when I was sick and tired of crimes committed behind locked doors, Mr. Doherty presented a new spin on an often overused theme. I enjoyed this book in the series and I think you will too.

Don't expect to learn how to write RTL hardware descriptions from this book. Do expect to have a complete guide to using the Xilinx ISE development environment and several different Xilinx FPGA based boards. All firmware that you build and load into hardware is already written. The book is simply a guide to compiling and loading this firmware into FPGA devices. As such it is complete and accurate. Easy to read and understand.

This book has some good information about some Xilinx FPGAs, but it needs some serious editing. I have found several typos, the author is apparently confused assumptions about the reader so elementary terms he defines while other more advanced terms are assumed.There is some good information, it is just not well organized.I'd like the author to produce a revision with the help of a good editor and someone who the author considers the ideal reader to help better organize the information. I'd be glad to help.

Great book, though it doesnt cover newer fpga architectures like the Zynq or Vivado it does a great job of explaining how to get started and has some fun projects.Cons: hasn't been proofread completely and some of the concepts arent connected well. You may have to supplement with youtube to get the most out of it.

This book uses multiple boards for illustration, and does not go beyond the examples which come with the boards. I promptly return the book. If you want to learn Verilog, I would recommend "Advanced Chip Design, Practical Examples in Verilog" instead. Or even free articles like this one: [...]. For FPGA boards, this Xilinx board comes with necessary (English) docs: XC6SLX9 Starter Board,Xilinx Spartan 6 FPGA (find it on flea bay).

This book has a very straightforward goal, and it meets that goal well. "Make: FPGAs" does not attempt to turn you into an expert in using software and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to create special-function hardware. Instead, it presents "eight interesting FPGA projects that will help you develop some of the skills you will need to really begin exploring this exciting world of turning software into hardware through FPGA technology." David Romano, the author, shows several consumer-affordable ($29.95 to $200) FPGA development boards and then explains the design flow necessary to work with them effectively. The projects range from a simple frequency divider, to a Bitcoin miner, and a software-defined radio (SDR). The software for the projects, meanwhile, can be downloaded from GitHub. The book takes a clear, step-by-step approach to each project and offers many illustrations, screenshots and photographs.(My thanks to O'Reilly Media for providing a review copy.)

I didn't buy this book through Amazon, but if I had, I would be returning it for a refund.The first third of this book (84 pages) make perect sense, is helpful, and is easy to follow.Starting with page 85, and almost through the end of the book there is almost nothing being said that relates to anything said before, or is anything other than disjointed information that might have been pulled from some datasheet or tutorial somewhere.It's almost as if the author ran out of time to write pages 85 and beyond, and merely published his "cliff notes" for those parts. I really don't get it.You can't simply switch from a "hands on" teach ing style (pages 1-84), and then just forget that mid-book (pages 85-182 or so) and start presenting raw VHDL programming code for no reason, and without any introduction or explanation.Some parts of the book beyond page 183 are probaby usable on their own, but these are mostly regurgitating other people's FPGA projects, which you can find on their websites.I recommend you try another FPGA book, unless you can afford to pay for a 1/3-usable one.

The Rizzoli and Isles books have been a series that I’ve followed for some years now. I enjoy them, but I am fully aware that the quality is uneven. Unfortunately, I Know a Secret is one of Gerritsen’s “off” books. There are good ideas that went into this mystery. For example, the method behind the murders is the right kind of twisted. In a better book, it would have been chilling. Instead, the focus remains on an old mystery that isn’t anywhere near as interesting as Gerritsen seems to think it is. There’s also a subplot with Dr. Isles’ mother that ultimately has no payoff at all. These distractions dilute the book’s good qualities.On top of that, there are glaring plot contrivances. Rizzoli is repeatedly told that a project the first victim was working on was inspired by a painful episode from her past, yet she doesn’t think to find out what this painful episode was until the book is nearly over–and sure enough, it’s the key to solving the whole thing. I understand that Gerritsen couldn’t give it away too soon (otherwise there would be no book), but the handling makes Rizzoli look inept–which she most definitely is not. Furthermore, there’s a character who knows the identity of the killer, so there’s really no mystery at all. Rizzoli only has to solve it because this character won’t tell anyone (otherwise the title wouldn’t make sense). It’s shockingly clumsy plotting from Gerritsen, who is usually better than this.There are treats for fans–including the return of Father Daniel Brophy–but there’s no denying that the book feels like it’s only half trying.Grade: C+

Trust me, you will not know "whodunnit" right away. Gerritsen is too good at plot development. This novel is a most satisfying chapter in the Rizzoli and Isles book of adventures. In addition, the author's gaze focuses like a laser on human psychology, on how children's memories function, on how prisons do more than incarcerate those guilty of a crime. Now that the public has been made aware of the damage of false accusations, perhaps one day the jails and prisons will no longer hold the innocent as well as the guilty.

Although it has been 3 years since the last Rizzoli & isles novel only one month has elapsed in the story line.A good story and the killer seems obvious early on but all is not what it seems. Good to see Jane's mother Angela again. I would hope that future novels will have Jane and Gabriel work on a case together. In this book he is just a minor character. As for Maura, oh Maura!, get your head together and call Anthony!!! He is not even mentioned in this book.The story is based on the McMartin Day Care tragedy in Malden, MA. Names and location are changed but the details are unmistakable. There is even a reference to a fictional McMartin Day Care scandal in Los Angeles. It was essentially a modern day Salem witch trial.

Not up to her usual standard. It felt like a first draft or a quick second with cursory editing. There were passages that were so clunky they made me cringe, and then there was Maura and Daniel. Again.I'm also tired of Disgusting Fat Character that's in enough Gerritsen books that I was just waiting to see where he/she would show up, and the author did not disappoint. I'm thinking I'll make a drinking game of it in the future. Three sips for the appearance of DFC, and one for each cliché (doughy hands, big as a house etc..,). Should there be an allowance for Korsak since Jane's mother loves him or is that his only redeeming quality? I'll have to give it some more thought.That said, I did finish the book and I certainly didn't hate it. It just wasn't as gripping as some of the others and I was disappointed because I'd saved it for my vacation. Hopefully next year's will be better...

I loved this new addition to the Rizzoli and Isles family. I was lucky enough to hear Tess Gerritsen speak, and this was one I had signed since it had just come out. For this book, I loved the themes, the motives, the relationship between how the victim is found and the connection to what it represents (notice I am trying to give nothing away). I also love that Maura is a main focus again. This book is so amazing that I bought it on kindle, hardback, and audio. This is a great new novel for Rizzoli and Isles, and yet it also felt a little different. It seems like we knew more of the killer's mindset in a way. Love it, and cannot recommend it enough!

I have been a fan of Tess Gerritsen since I read harvest almost 15 years ago.... I remember the thrill I used to experience reading her books as they were full of surprises and conniving twists and turns... yet her last few books have left so much to be desired. The plot is predictable and one can summarize s by the mid of the book what is actually going to happen in the end. The climax of the book could have been better and of course... there has to be retribution for those who partake in evil... yet we do not get that satisfaction in this novel!!!!

Great book! I tried to stretch out my reading so I could enjoy it longer....but no, finished it in 3 days! ( could have been 2) but I stretched! Tess Gerritsen is one of my favorite authors and this book was one of her best. You have a good guess what's going on and the story seems predictable, but keep reading, the end will blow you away!

I was concerned. Too often established writers start turning out half baked stories, relying on past reputation and a strong following to sell books. Not the case here. Another great Rizzoli and Isles book in line with the other books in the series. There has always been a divergence between the family story line in the book versus the TV series. It took a moment to reorientate myself. In the book series, Jane has a husband and a daughter. Her mother Angela had reconciled with her father Frank. Laura’s TV mother is a famous doctor, in the book, a psychotic killer. But just great to read another Rizzoli and Isles mystery that is a good as her past works.

I had to buy this book for a class. I had not studied leadership formally in the past so I didn't have many points of reference, but this seems like a pretty comprehensive and well-written book. Each chapter covers a different approach to leadership and ends with some case studies and a survey that the reader can take. This is an academic approach to leadership and not a gimmicky self-help type book.

This book could be exponentially shorter if the author didn't talk circles around what he's saying. "How can I drag this sentence out and make myself sound smart?" If this wasn't for a college class, it would have never landed on my bookshelf.This book is fraught with grammar mistakes.The first half of the book, the author talks about work that OTHER PEOPLE have done. It's the same exact thing over and over, only spoken about in a different manner. It would be better titled "Leadership, Eighth Edition" written by Steve Jobs.

Required textbook for graduate studies. It contains easy to read substantial material with great chapter by chapter references. I would have liked the book to be of larger size close to or similar to other textbooks.

I have really enjoyed this textbook up until this point. It is thoughtful, well organized and a good general survey of leadership styles. I have also found it very balanced in the presentation of each leadership style, simply stating the precepts and the challenges with each style.

I used this book in Advanced Leadership for my PhD. It is an excellent resource. It covers leadership theory and practice very well. The primary references alone are worth the price of the book.

This book is outlined very much like a how-to book, or like a textbook on leadership, which I suppose it is. In this, you might learn only a few new things about leadership and leadership styles. If you don't have a very strong understanding or a lot of knowledge about leadership, this book is for you. If you're not new to the word of leadership in its many forms, this is more like a refresher/resource book and not something you need to read seriously. You can pick and choose your chapters if that's the case.

Most of the textbooks that I get from classes I resale but this book is a keeper. If you have any questions regarding leadership styles or methods this book gives great examples and details. It presents real life scenarios and how different leadership styles play in those scenarios. Northouse does a great job of explaining leaderships skills vs. leadership traits. It explains effective leadership skills even if you don't have the traits of leadership.

Northouse uses this text to introduce many common leadership theories and ways that you can put these theories into everyday life. While the pages are not the easiest to read, it does provide in depth insight into some of the many common practices of leadership. Highly reccomend even if it is not a required reading as it was for my leadership minor.

I own this book, as well as the The Ashley Book of Knots. I also own several other books on knots.I think this book is a great complement to the ABOK, because a lot of the knots in the ABOK are not very useful. The ABOK is without a doubt THE canonical reference on knot-tying, but many of the 3000+ knots are not useful and should be avoided.This book, by Geoffrey Budworth, lists many of the common knots that ARE useful on a day-to-day basis. Furthermore, the clear photos and and expanded illustrations make it much easier to follow.I am not aware of any knot-tying book that tries to replace the ABOK, but for a concise summary of USEFUL knots, this is the best one I have found.

Any good book needs to be environmentally conscious and responsible in printing. In this case, I am surprised by its overly large photos and illustrations that takes up a full page and serving no meaningful purpose. It is more for decorative than to benefit the user. So I end up with a big book (by dimensions) which could be more manageable by reducing its page dimensions and making it more handy. Absolutely unnecessary to have such large pages.

I enjoy the layout of book and history of knots, but the instructions and drawn diagrams were horrible! Why use a green arrow (to show where you pull the end through) when the rope drawing is green? I am on the 4th rope and I am completely lost! Thank goodness for YouTube...

I have problems tying anything. I have survived for decades with a shoelace knot and a square knot.Clear instructions and great illustrations have me getting more and more sophisticated in creating USEFUL tools. Rope is now a multifaceted tool, not just a length of cord.There may be others, but I find it hard to believe there is better.

Tons of useful information. Book is larger in size than I thought that it would be.

Being somewhat unfamiliar with knots I found this book interesting to read. Each knot has a little history behind it and many are illustrated more than once in tying. Each knot has one or more diagrams showing step-by-step how to tie it. The illustrations are at times take a little study to follow. A couple I thought weren't done completely right. This was the weakness of the book. More care could have been taken in using colors to accent the flow of tying the knots. Overall, with a little patience just on some of the knots they can be tied as shown. The knots included I thought provided a good selection and for the average person you'll have all you need. This is still a book I'd recommend.

Not a bad book. The pictures are nice and the instructions are easy to read and follow. Essential book for any person that enjoys the outdoors- hunting, campaign, hiking, boating, etc...
