This is an amazing book. I now have a different view of "Jesus" and see him as a great teacher. I have read the entire book and now it sits on my kitchen table. Each morning I read one of his sayings and meditate on the message as I eat breakfast. It is too bad that more of us do not know the power of the sayings contained in the Gospel Q.

a refreshing read of the authentic sayings of Jesus. No miracles, no virgin birth, just wisdom from every page.

Extremely valuable for both pulmonologists and intensivists of all stages (from trainees to experienced physicians). I am a junior faculty member and since receiving this book one week ago, I have used it almost every day. The chapters focus on nearly all major pulmonary and critical care topics, and are very easy to read and comprehensive. In fact, I have found this book easier to read and understand than nearly all other PCCM resources available.Aspects that I love so far (after my first week of owning this book):- Bulleted insights and information mixed in with algorithmic approaches to various topics- A conversational tone which makes the reader feel as if they are on rounds with a master clinician- The book is small enough in size to easy carry in your bag or in a large coat pocket.- The pictures really hit home certain key concepts5/5 stars and HIGHLY recommend to all physicians looking for a good resource on pulmonary and critical care medicine!

The many spelling and editing errors in the Inkling ebook are unforgivable (but correctable). I am looking forward to the updates. It's more than a year after publication and they still haven't been corrected? Doesn't the author have a smidge of vanity?Also, while the pulmonary part is excellent, some of the stuff in the critical care chapters seem taken out of a 1990s book (up to 6L of fluids in sepsis, dopamine for septic cardiomyopathy etc.). I will keep the book for its pulmonary insights (I am a surgical intensivist), but I would caution trainees to doublecheck the critical care contents before applying them blindly.

Practical, extremely high-yield, and appropriate/relevant for a wide audience - from med students to attending physicians, from NP/PAs to RTs. Great presentation of topics with bulleted points, algorithms, and imaging and clinical cases that drive home the intended teaching points. Clearly written by a master clinician with an engaging style and overflowing with teaching pearls, I found reading this manual to be very unique from other textbooks and literature in the field. The size of the book, which fits easily into your coat pocket, reemphasizes that this manual is extremely usable and is intended to be applicable to your day-to-day practice. Well done.

This is an excellent resource for clinically relevant topics in critical care and pulmonary medicine. It is concise, easy to read and emphasizes on the key points that is helpful in day-to-day practice; and also covers topics that may not be as commonly encountered but definitely helpful to have a refresher nearby . Worth the investment!!

This is an excellent, clinically-focused guide to pulmonary and intensive care medicine. Covers all the basics with abundant high-quality illustrative figures and cases. Great for the intended audience of house-staff, med students, NP/PA, ICU RNs, RTs firming up their ICU knowledge. The author describes this as a readable description of all the things he wishes he knew when he was a younger doctor, and I think that theme shines through. The pearls that he describes come from experience, and are very practical/actionable to your practice. Does not dwell excessively on critical-care literature and evidenced-based medicine in critical care, which is not to say that it is not evidence based. Instead of debating subtitles of trial design and controversies in critical care, this book focuses on simpler questions of what do do with the patient in front of you. The gist of this book is the answer to the question: "If I had 20 years of experience in the ICU, how would I approach this common problem".I enjoyed:case based presentation with wonderful figuresthe best focused ICU chest radiology review I have foundsmall form-factor (lab coat pocket sized) for quick referenceenjoyed it equally to Marin's classic "the ICU book". The book contains lots of pearls and addresses many misconceptions that have made it into routine practice. Dr Landsberg has done a phenomenal job making complex topics simple, understandable, and translatable to the bedside. Highly recommend this to anyone working in either the ICU or ED as required reading!

A member of a talented middle class family, she enjoyed every advantage that her parents could provide, which was considerable. From an early age she displayed a thirst for adventure. She fled to Paris to study and fell in love with the Latin Quarter before returning to America. Moving to New York City she stepped into the path of and on-coming car and was pulled to safety by a well-dressed stranger. In shock, Lee babbled in French causing the stranger, Conde Nast, to take a closer look at the young woman he'd just rescued. He was impressed and asked her if she would like to come to work for one of his magazines--Vogue. At age of 19 Lee became a cover girl for Vogue and was dubbed the embodiment of the modern girl. She was the official model for the legendary "flapper." Soon she was in demand by most of the most famous photographers in America including Edward Steichen and Arnold Genthe. Tiring of being just a New York celebrity-model Lee was soon back in Paris where in a single day she became the traveling companion, mistress, model, muse, photography assistant and student of photographer Man Ray. Through him she became a member of the Surrealists and lived and moved among the great artists and writers living and working in Montparnasse at the time. Her early associations with these world famous artists would change her life. Under Man Ray's tutelage she slowly began a transformation from being in front of the camera to being behind it. She eventually received additional photographic training at the Clarence White School along with another soon-to-be-famous woman photographer Margaret Bourke-White. After marrying a wealthy Egyptian and going slightly crazy as a member of the "Black Satin & Pearls" expatriates living in Cairo, Lee found her mission in life by another unlikely event rivaling her earlier "Grace Kelly-like" discovery by Conde Nast. World War II broke out while Lee awaited its predicted arrival in London. Unbelievably she was soon working as a war photographer for Vogue magazine. Through her good looks, charm, talent and stealth she was soon the only woman photographer covering the front lines of the European battlefront. World War II was the highlight of Lee's photography career. She took to being a successful war correspondent like a duckling takes to water. She was tireless, talented, resourceful and finally fulfilled through accomplishing important work. Changed by her war experiences, (an early example of Post-Traumatic Stress) she never quite received the same sense of satisfaction for her later work, but she was no longer as restless after having fulfilled some indefinable need in her naturally adventurous personality. For a beautiful woman (Picasso painted six bare breasted portraits of her during one summer), she was able to shake off the handicap of being a NY celebrity and actually accomplishes some important work that fulfilled her innermost needs. She was no longer just Lady Penrose, but her own person with her own considerable accomplishments. When Queen Elizabeth knighted her husband fellow Surrealist Roland Penrose in 1966, it didn't turn her into a snob. She sometimes jokingly referred to herself as "Lady Lee of Poughkeepsie." There is a lot of humor in this biography. Here are two choice lines, paraphrased, neither of them by Lee: ..."brevity is the soul of lingerie" (Dottie Parker) and on the subject of a new brand of women's underwear for the well-dressed wartime English women, "One Yank and they come right off." "The Art of Lee Miller" by Mark Haworth-Booth is an excellent companion book to Burke's biography because it reproduces many of the photographs discussed, but not shown in the biography. Lee Miller was notable for her beauty, her famous artist friends, her photography, her sense of humor and her infamous sexual exploits. Except for a few boring moments during her "Black Satin & Pearls" experience in Egypt, this exhaustively researched book is difficult to put aside. During the hours spent reading the WW II segments I would stop reading and find myself disoriented to be back in the present time and not on the European battlefields. That's powerful writing at work.Lee Miller was much more than Vogue's personification of the "quintessential flapper." The reader can have fun comparing the Vogue cover of 19-year-old Lee as the epitome of the stylish modern New York woman with another picture of her washing off six-weeks of hard-won war correspondent grime while bathing in Hitler's personal bathtub in his captured Munich home. Unfortunately, she reported the bath reminded her too much of her recent, terrifying photo coverage of the liberation of Dachau and it's "bathhouse gas chambers."

I bogged down in the first half of this book. I was annoyed that the author didn't mention whether Lee's rapist was ever prosecuted. Child abuse is so upsetting. After that, Lee's years as a beautiful young woman in Paris who was as sexually "liberated" as the hippies of the 1960s was frankly boring me. I put the book aside for several months, but then picked it up again and got into the war years. This was absolutely fascinating. Lee was amazing as a photo journalist in WWII. She was a remarkable woman. This book gives very interesting glimpses into the war and post war Europe.

An amazing life only told in a so-so way. I forced myself to continue but it didn't get better.

Writing about Lee Miller is like writing about Earnest Hemingway. It can't be anything other than fascinating. Miller lived an extraordinary life on both sides of the lens. Her young body captured by her lover Man Ray (and her father) is a thing of beauty yet so are her incredibly arresting images of everyone from Charlie Chaplin to a broken and beaten German prison guard. Miller knew what she wanted and like Hemingway, let nothing or no one get in her way. And, like Hemingway, once she achieved it all, disillusion wormed its way in along with pills and booze which took her beauty and damaged her sense of humor. My chief complaint with this book is the amount of time Carolyn Burke dedicates to describing Lee Miller's images rather than showing them. It's the difference in describing sex and having it.

Model, journalist, photojournalist -- her participation in coverage of World War II in Europe was both atypical and showed splendid bravery.

It's a cautionary tale that is the most perfect description of the current startup "culture" I've ever read. It made my blood boil while reading it, and at the same time I found myself laughing out loud throughout.The book is a remarkable achievement, giving both prospective employees and investors a razor-sharp look inside a hellhole that seems so pleasant from its exterior. I loved this book and hope all my former, present and future colleagues take the time to read it.

Would you expect less from a writer for the TV show Silicon Valley? Reading Disrupted is like binge-watching SV, only this company is a REAL place, which makes it even better.Important social issues: Disrupted also raises a couple of troubling issues that surely extend far beyond the culture of this one company. The first is what appears to be a false promise of meaningful work to young people who desperately want to be doing meaningful work, but who are really just making a couple of people very, very wealthy. There's a smoke-and-mirrors quality to the ways in which employees are recruited, trained, treated, and then "graduated" (Hubspot's term for "fired"). They're told that the work they'll be doing is changing the world (when really what they're doing is online advertising), that Hubspot is more selective than Harvard (when this is actually a severe distortion of the data), and so on. The perks used to attract employees include an 'awesome!!!' candy wall, shower pods, beer, nerf gun battles, etc. You quickly get the sense that the work is empty, meaningless, even soulless -- and that what it's really about is making a couple of guys very, very rich (which I would be okay with IF the work truly were meaningful and IF the employees truly were being treated as individual humans, not as hypnotized sheep.)Second, Dan is brave enough to bring up another important issue in startup culture: ageism. Older people are seen as having nothing to contribute. The age discrimination is actually shockingly overt. Imagine saying, "I want to run a company that really attracts people with blue eyes, because people with brown eyes just aren't creative." You'd (probably) never say something like that. But people who run this company openly say that about young people versus older people. I'm glad Dan is talking about it, because someone needed to start that conversation.

If you've ever considered investing in an IPO (Initial Public Offering) of a company about to go public, and it's a Technology StartUp, don't waste your money. I couldn't believe what I was reading of what really happens when a Tech company goes public. This book is non stop reading once you pick it up. At around 260 pages, easy to read font, you'll feel like you're right there at HubSpot with the author working at a playground. Kids are left to run a company started by adults for no other reason than to create a lot of hype that the company is important enough to go public. Companies without profits are being allowed to list on the stock exchange so venture capitalist and founders can get rich off of your money. There's absolutely no oversight or regulations to protect public investors who want to invest in an IPO and someone needs to go to prison as a result of whats happening. This book describes part two of "Wall Street Gone Wild" and it all starts in Silicon Valley where venture capital firms raise money from wealthy people to finance scams called Tech StartUps. When you hear that a company valuation is in the billions, don't believe it because it's just one opinion to create hype before a company goes public. There once was a time when a company had to show a profit before an IPO, "Not Anymore" as this book depicts. As an investor of a tech startup today, your money pays for beer, candy and play, all so a so called tech company can hire a bunch of kids who are willing to work cheap writing blogs and engaging in phone solicitations to sell a worthless cloud software product (SaaS) otherwise known as software as a service. Hold on to your money and read this this book is all I can say. As for HubSpot, the tech company where the author worked, it's losing borrowed money each day while it trades on the stock market, yet analyst tell you to buy it. In my opinion after reading this book, it's uncovered some things the tech industry and venture capitalist hoped the general public never knew.

This is the funniest book I've read in years. Anyone who works (or has worked) at a start-up and who understands the forced corporate culture should read this. This is exactly like the start up i most recently worked for, even down to the names and titles. I was literally spitting out my tea at my desk while I laughed. Ever had to take a personality test and then get stuck in a room talking about it for 1/2 day while your work piles up? Dan talks about it and summarizes it perfectly.

Tracie Peterson has another winner for us!! She has been one of my favorite authors for years!!This story is a continuation of Judith and Caleb. It was love at first sight for Judith when she saw Caleb at his home where she was living with his sister and their friend Kenzie. Judith had traveled to San Francisco to look for her family after finding a letter with information written by her mother. It was very confusing for her when her world was turned upside down after finding her grandmother. This was a very exciting story which included the earthquake and fires of 1906 as well as some family mystery!! This book kept me reading the night through!!

Tracie has done it again! Wonderful story line character s came alive! Caleb, Judith, Camri, Patrick and Kenzie, Dr. Fisher, even the Whitley family and the Song's made for amazing reading and hopefully Kenzie and doctor Fisher will be together! So, I'm praying for book 3!

This book is taken from the documentary of the same name, which was the first Ken & Ric Burns doc I saw, back in the late 80's, I think, and my introduction to the Shakers. I bought the video tape back then, and recently the DVD. I truly love this book, especially since I've been to the Pleasant Hill village.If you have any interest in the Shakers, get this book, it is beautiful and very informative.

I purchased this to get a better understanding of the faith - methods of work - approach to design - and under standing the simple life of hard work deadicated to God. This text enhanced my understanding. Plus there are great illustration and photographs.

This is a beautiful book.

I have previously given a superb review of Ken Burns film the 'Shakers'. How could I not do the same for a print medium that uses his photos. However, please note; Ken Burns tends to gloss over much; as a film producer, he has time constraints. We as readers do not! I did not see the movie, but I enjoyed this story about really happened in Benghazi. The book took time to explain the major and minor characters and provided us background not jus on the people, but the location, and set up the story very well. The true life characters were portrayed as real people with hopes and dreams. I was hoping they would all make it, but since this real life, that did not happen. I will pick up the Blur-ray when it comes out. If you enjoyed reading and watching Blackhawk Down, then this true thriller is for you.

I'll admit I was completely ignorant of many of the details surrounding this terrorist attack. I am ashamed of just how ignorant I was. This is not a politically slanted story. It is an illustration of how our government was unprepared for this attack and no one in charge seemed to know what to do. I don't think the President's name or the Secretary of State's name were ever mentioned.I did not realize it was not a military force which fought off the attackers. I also did not realize there were two different facilities attacked that night. I had only listened to small portions of the congressional hearings and it seems to me I had heard more on the news about the reason for the attacks rather than the actual details of the attacks. This story is an incredible story is which must be told and should be taught. It is a frightening realization into just how easily our country can suffer a tragedy. The element of surprise will always give one side the upper hand and unfortunately we were caught off guard.Many people take for granted the freedom's we've been afforded with little to no personal sacrifice ourselves. Many Americans have answered the call to service and many more have died. Those brave men and women only paid part of the price in terms of sacrifice; their friends, family and loved ones paid the other part. American's, some days, may argue and complain they have to wait in line too long, or because their internet is down. It's a shame we, as Americans, have so little appreciation for the sacrifices made on our behalf. It is also a blessing we are able to live life with so few real tribulations.Thank you, to everyone, who has fought for our way of life. Always remember, freedom isn't free.

This is an excellent book the tells the story of what happened in Benghazi at both the diplomatic compound and at the CIA Annex. It is told by the operators, warriors, that were there and that fought to save lives and protect other Americans. The book takes no side in the political arguments that have taken place during the event or after the event. It is written to simply tell the story of the actions of the people involved in protecting the security and lives of the people that were there.The book is well written and the story is so intense that it is hard to stop reading for any reason. It shows the bravery of the men involved in the security and how they risk their lives to protect the Americans in Benghazi. It is important for people to know that brave men defend this country daily and this story clearly depicts what these men went through during this ordeal.I rated this book at 5 stars and I commend the warriors that were involved. Overall people were killed by terrorists and many more would have certainly died if not for the brave actions of these men. This is a fair recollection of the events as they happened and I recommend that you read this book if you have any interest of the true events that took place.This book is amazing when you consider both sides of the story that was told to the American citizens.

There was no official consulate in Benghazi. They called it the Diplomatic Compound, or Compound, because it unofficially housed American diplomats at various times for varying purposes. It was slated to host Ambassador Chris Stevens on his next Benghazi visit from Tripoli on September 11, 2012.Less than a mile away was the clandestine CIA compound known as The Annex. It housed about 30 CIA analysts and a small force of contract "operators" who provided security. They were known as the Global Response Staff (GRS Operators). The operators would accompany CIA agents as they made there way through the unfriendly confines of the city to assure their safety. They also provided security for the Annex.While the State Department hired local militia to provide most of the heavily armed security in both places, the GRS Operators knew they were the only ones they could trust if and when the crap hit the fan.The five GRS members of the Annex Security Team were all ex-military (Rangers, SEALS, Marines), all knew each other well, were in their late thirties and early forties and most had young families. All had vast Middle East military experience and some knew the language well. Others promised this to be their last "paycheck" before retiring for good; a last chance to make a few dollars to provide some financial security to their families.The Annex GRS team was asked to do an assessment of the security at the Diplomatic Compound. Ambassador Stevens had only a handful of capable, but light armed, Department of State (DS) agents for his personal protection. The Annex Security Team told the DS staff their security arrangement was awful, they should not trust the militia and would be easily overrun if a forceful attack was made. They also promised to act as the QRF (Quick Reaction Force) and come to their assistance in the event of an attack.Both Stevens and the DS agents had long asked the Department of State for more protection for the Ambassador but were routinely turned down. A lightly guarded American Ambassador in a tumultuous and unsettled Arab city was a ripe target and a recipe for disaster, especially on the anniversary of September 11.The worst did come to pass. 13 Hours is the story of how the GRS operators from the Annex did all they could, at huge risk of life and limb, to save the Ambassador, his staff and the DS agents. By the time they got there, the Compound had been overrun and the buildings were ablaze and smoking. The local militia protection had fled. They then returned to the Annex to repel 2 formidable terrorist attacks thereby protecting the CIA staff (and most likely its secrets) within that compound. The third attack killed two of them.These operators were not young gung-ho soldiers acting recklessly in a randomly scattered effort to kill the enemy. They were mature, competent, professional warriors who trusted each other implicitly. They would willingly give their life for each other or for the mission. But not before extracting a terrible price from their enemy. They were the consummate warriors, insisting on providing help to the diplomatic compound when the desperate calls for help started coming in. However, they were delayed by the controversial "stand down" order (if they said they were given one, you can be sure it's the truth) and did not arrive at the Diplomatic Compound in a timely manner.They may not have been able to save Chris Stevens or Sean Smith in any event but they successfully evacuated the rest of the staff and returned to defend the Annex.At the Annex, exposed on the rooftops to provide better firing and observation positions, these GRS Operators made their stand. Dozens if not hundreds of jihadists were cut down attempting to breach the walls. Stocked with plenty of ammo and night vision, they made their attackers pay a humiliating price. But they knew as good as they were, they could not hold out forever.Their pleas for a Specter gunship or low flying F-16s or a company of Marines were ignored and they began to wonder why their country was not helping them. Finally, a convoy of GRS Operators from Tripoli and Libyan Militia fought their way into the Annex and evacuated all personnel. All but ex-SEAL Tyrone "Rone" Woods and his old SEAL friend Glen "Bub" Doherty who came in with the "rescue" convoy and Sean Smith and Ambassador Stevens. They went out in body bags.Mitch Zuckoff does a wonderful job introducing us to these extraordinary war-fighters. His narrative is fast paced and the ironies are numerous and heart breaking. You can't help but bleed with these special guys, cry with their families and shake a fist at the leadership that abandoned them.John E.
