I recently started a new position that required me to use a lot of MS Office programs that I had not worked with in years. This provided me with a quick reference guide to get me back in the swing in a short time. Absolutely priceless in my situation. They won't teach you the software but they will save you countless hours searching the "help" pages.

Great update for someone who's used older versions of Word.

pretty basic and that's as advertised. If you're brand new...nice. If you've used Word a while...get the advanced for both this and Excel.

If my vision was better I would probably use it but for me the print is too small.

My last Microsoft Office Suite experience was their 2007 version, and many changes have been made since then. The basics are still the same, but catching up with the highfalutin advancements was next to impossible, and I needed a little help. My WORD use in retirement is limited, so I think this little cheat sheet will provide all I need for just about every function related to my current life.

Many times as a pastor I have heard Christians refer to the Holy Spirit as an "it," or a "power/force," or the like. I have also heard many times that the most abstract member of the trinity to many Christians is the Holy Spirit. It has been my own experience that I have had to work harder to understand and know the Holy Spirit more than any other Person in the Trinity. In this book Dr. Sproul writes with profound insight, biblical acumen, and exegetical precision and gradually peels away the mysteries surrounding the third Person in the Trinity.There are ten good reasons to read this book and its because each chapter handles a distinct important aspect of the character or attributes of the Holy Spirit and Sproul then cogently and articulately explains the ramifications for us theologically and then practically.In chapter one Dr. Sproul asks and answers the question "Who is the Holy Spirit?" by using various Scriptures demonstrating that the Holy Spirit is a "person;" that we are called to a have a "personal relationship with him;" and that he performs "personal tasks."In chapter two the author gives a plethora of Scriptures and some very good logical arguments like this one: "Were the Holy Spirit not God, it is extremely unlikely that blasphemy against Him would be regarded as unpardonable," to show very clearly that the Bible teaches the deity of the Holy Spirit in both the Old and New Testaments.In chapter three Dr. Sproul tackles and dismantles the most common objections raised against the Trinity and deals with them historically, biblically, and philosophically. He answers the following objections with great erudition, concise simplicity, and with immense sagacity:Objection #1: The Word "Trinity" is not a biblical word and represents the invasion of foreign philosophy into biblical revelation.Objection #2: The doctrine of the Trinity is contradictory and therefore irrational.He demonstrates clearly in this chapter that the Trinitarian formula is neither contradictory nor irrational--rather it is biblical and logical.Chapter four is vintage Sproul. Dr. Sproul is known for his outstanding vocabulary and for making things clear by explaining the meaning of words with reference to his subject of discussion. Dr. Sproul takes the time in this chapter to define the meanings and distinctions of the Holy Spirit as "essence" and "person." He explains this by elaborating on three concepts: contradiction, paradox, and mystery with reference to our understanding of the Holy Spirit's character and attributes.Chapter six is a wonderful explanation of God the Holy Spirit's work in physical and spiritual creation. He summarizes the chapter in this manner: "It is the Holy Spirit who supplies the dynamic for the created world. By His power the universe has life and motion...there is a parallel between the Spirit's work in creation and redemption. As He is the generating power of biological life, so is He the source and generating power of spiritual life. His work in redemption mirrors and supplements His work in creation. He works both in creation and re-creation of a fallen world."In Chapter six Dr. Sproul gives a masterful presentation on what it means to be "born-again" or "regenerated" by the Holy Spirit. He demonstrates from John 3 and Ephesians 2 how we are "dead" spiritually and must be "made alive" by the Holy Spirit in order to be saved. He gives an outstanding presentation of why regeneration must precede faith and obliterates the much believed idea that faith + rebirth = justification.Chapter seven is a wonderful articulation of the eternal security of those who are indeed regenerate. Sproul gives a very good presentation on the biblical distinctions of justification (monergistically - God alone working to save us); and sanctification (synergistically - the cooperation between the Holy Spirit and us).I think chapter 8 on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is perhaps the best in the book. The baptism of the Spirit may be one of the least understood issues in theology today. Dr. Sproul brings great clarity and synthesis to a better understanding of this doctrine and its immense importance. The thesis he defends is summed up at the end of the chapter in this manner:"I am not saying that everyone who is a member of a Christian church has the Holy Spirit. Membership in the visible church no more guarantees the baptism of the Holy Spirit than it guarantees salvation. We know that there are unbelievers who are church members. No unbeliever has the baptism of the Holy Spirit, but every believer, every regenerate person, does have the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Every Christian from Pentecost to the present is both regenerate of the Spirit and baptized in the Spirit. That is the essence of the meaning of Pentecost. Anything less casts a shadow over the sacred importance of Pentecost in the history of redemption. Any person who is regenerate is also sealed by the Spirit, baptized in the Spirit, and has the earnest of the Spirit."In chapter nine we have a great exposition of Galatians 5 contrasting the works of the flesh and the work of the Spirit, and lastly in chapter ten Dr. Sproul shows how the Holy Spirit is Christ's Vicar on earth to empower, comfort, and use us for the glory of Christ.Honestly, I'm surprised this book has not been a BIG seller. As far as I'm concerned it is the best book bridging great scholarship in laymen's terms on the Person and Work of the Holy Spirit in the English language. I have read over twenty books on the Holy Spirit - and this is my third time through Sproul's work, and it is still the one I would recommend most if you are going to read one book on the Holy Spirit.

I bought this book because I have a goal of learning more about the Holy Spirit. From a technical standpoint, this book was very informative. I was, however, disappointed that there wasn’t more guidance in the details of what a healthy, working relationship with the Holy Spirit is like. I was seeking more of a “where the rubber meets the road” type enlightenment. I’m a very practical, active in living, middle class family mom. I so desire to fully recognize and follow the Holy Spirit’s working in my life. I want God’s full, two-way, clear participation in my survival and usefulness “on this planet”. If you know of any media that might be of use to me, please respond to this post.Though this book was not exactly what I hoped, I do not regret reading it. I appreciated the technical Biblical outline of the Holy Spirit. I will however note that some of Mr. Sproul’s interpretations of this information disturbed me somewhat, especially on the subject of “salvation”. I felt that there was little room, respect or tolerance for other valid, well studied, interpretations. This, as well, is a great mystery of the Holy Spirit to me. How can there be so many well studied, well supported interpretations of Scripture diligently taught throughout time and cultures by people who are obviously seeking God’s truth with all their energy and heart? You would think that if we, as Christians, all have access to the same Holy Spirit, our sincere belief’s would be the same.

I love listening to and reading R. C. Sproul. Our Lord has gifted him in a unique manner given his training in philosophy and theology. Pneumatology has been somewhat neglected in modern times and taken a back seat to Christology. This is a shame because the essence and work of the Holy Spirit is arguably more present in our day to day, minute to minute Christian lives than the other members of the Trinity. Though fully God and co-equal and co-eternal, the Spirit is not as tangible in Scripture for us as Christ and the Father. Yet it is through the Spirit that the world is created, sustained and we are able to be "in Christ" and "in one body." Dr. Sproul has a gift for explaining theological matters in ways that are accessible for the average Christian yet not watered down or oversimplified. The very presence of the Holy Spirit defines us as a Christian for He dwells in us and with us. I commend this book to all as it has helped me tremendously.

I loved this book. R. C. Sproule. As always, Spoule outlines everything about our Soverign God, how he chose you to be his child and recipient of his love and amazing grace, even before you were born. He chose you to be His in all eternity past. This book will give you the confidence of your believe and trust in our great and loving God. He is your Father and you have the privilege of being His beloved child now and for all eternity. I highly recommend this wonderful book to anyone who is searching for answers as to why we born, what is our calling, and through the guidance of our God, where we go for him, living in faith and following Him all the days of our lives.

It goes beyond Hardwiring Happiness to show you more specifically how to apply the principles of positive neuroplasticity to different aspects of personal development.If I had to choose one outstanding aspect of the book, it would be how it teaches you to grow beyond victimhood and martyrdom. In psychotherapy and ACA circles, which I have been a part of for many years, there is a proclivity to focus on and enable a victimhood mindset. In the Buddhist spiritual communities I have been a part of for many years, I have felt the opposite pitfall -- that the teaching to "open your heart to everyone" can enable martyrdom. Rick, as usual, holds the complexity in this book, that includes both poles, and a balancing of the various necessary perspectives. His broad-mindedness aims very high -- helping yourself while helping others, never leaving anyone out of your heart, or finding how to bring them back into your heart, while at the same time keeping yourself safe.I have learned from him more than anyone what post-traumatic growth is and how to practice it. The victim mindset feels unsatisfying to me. He offers practices to move beyond that, from many angles. Practicing focusing on the gifts and fullness of any given moment rather than the deficits (this has eased my suffering over time). Practicing considering upstream causes, that resulted in another person's actions toward you (or a culture's actions, etc.). How what comes at you is often not personal or about you. How one needs to discern and self-protect and assert oneself, but one of the best odds strategies for doing that is to help others feel safe. How one can learn to be autonomous or not "in lockstep" with others' actions, so that one can respond with unilateral virtue rather than react impulsively. How to meet the moment "feeling already full" and therefore not be so pulled to and fro by others. There's a strong, complex section on forgiveness.One of my issues is binge eating disorder, and I am having some successes with pausing during meals to notice "how full I am already" -- just with my sense doors -- what my eyes, ears, nose, and kinesthetic sense are taking in -- much fullness there. Or, when I want to eat more after I've had my fill, I redirect my focus to recalling all the delicious food I have already eaten for the day, I'm "already full." This book addresses where you place your focus and how you can work with the brain's various inaccurate biases.In his weekly sitting group, Hanson relates the principles of this book to the 4 Noble Truths (freedom from suffering) and the practice of cultivation (like the 4 Heavenly Abodes) in Buddhism. This book offers highly innovative and accessible ways to practice with craving and not craving, discontentment and contentment. This is a dense and hearty read. Also like another reviewer, I'm finding myself re-reading short sections associated with my daily practice on any given day.This is the book version of Rick Hanson's 12-month, online "Foundations of Well-Being" course, which I took last year, and also highly recommend, for the same reasons.I don't experience redundancy in his books. They each have a separate theme and purpose. This one is my favorite.

Greg Lehey is an independent computer consultant specializing in UNIX. Born in Australia, he was educated in Malaysia and England before studying chemistry in Germany and chemical engineering in England. He has spent his professional career in Germany, where he worked for computer manufacturers such as Univac and Tandem, the German space research agency, nameless software houses, and a large user before deciding to work for himself. In the course of over 20 years in the industry he has performed most jobs you can think of, ranging from kernel support to product marketing, systems programming to operating, processing satellite data to programming gasoline pumps. About the only thing he hasn't done is write commercial software. He is currently engaged in the production of CD-ROMs of ported free software, and this book is one result of his experience in this area. This is a great book for installing and maintaining FreeBSD. It explains why you may want to install certain commands or OS features and how to set them up. This book explains each aspect of the FreeBSD OS. This book is a great addition to the novice or experienced Unix user wanting to use FreeBSD.

As far as I know it's the only FreeBSD book but it would deserve 4 stars even in a tough competition. It covers installation, networking and administration in all details. I also enjoy FreeBSD 3.3 on 4 CDs enclosed in the book.I think the book lacks the description of coexistense with other operating systems (Samba coverage is shallow) and modern GUI desktop like KDE (I found it different in some details from Linux). It should also be more up-to-date.

This is the perfect computer book. It covers both beginner and intermediate topics with enough detail to really teach you what's going on, but not so much you get lost in theory. It is a easy book to read from beginning to end, or use as a reference and get just the info you need. If you are going to be using FreeBSD this is the book to have handy.Thank you Mr Lehey!

Before reading Greg Lehey's "The Complete FreeBSD, 4th Ed" (TCF:4E), I reviewed Michael Lucas' excellent "Absolute BSD" (a FreeBSD book) in Feb 03. I can't say which book is better, and I recommend you buy Lucas' book as well as this one. TCF:4E remains for me the FreeBSD user's manual; any serious FreeBSD user will have it on his or her shelf. The two books complement each other, as Lucas is often more direct in his explanations.While in some places I find Lucas' material easier to follow, Lehey offers depth of coverage not found elsewhere. For example, Lehey devotes the entirety of ch. 28 to low-level discussions of configuring and troubleshooting XFree86, whereas Lucas offers a few pages. (Urban and Tiemann's "FreeBSD Unleashed" talks about configuring X too.)Lucas' "Absolute BSD" focuses solely on FreeBSD. The only "straying" involves mentioning applications which run on FreeBSD. As apps like Apache and Postfix make systems useful, this makes sense. Lehey's TCF:4E is less concentrated, as it discusses intricacies of hardware, questions to ask ISPs before signing contracts, and principles of network troubleshooting. While I probably don't need to read such topics in a book I bought (yes, bought) for FreeBSD coverage, I didn't mind these "diversions." "Grog" Lehey has been around so long his insights are truly valuable. Lehey also presents a very traditional BSD usage model, where admins check their email using "mutt" (ch. 26) and avoid "Standard" installations in favor of "Custom" installations. I found this approach useful.Since TCF:4E is advertised as covering version 5.0, I hoped to see some introductory material on items brought from Robert Watson's "TrustedBSD" project. These were "experimental" in FreeBSD 5.0, but could change the way FreeBSD systems are administered. Overall, security didn't get as much attention in Lehey's book compared to Lucas'. For example, Lucas walked readers through deploying a jail, while Lehey doesn't mention the subject. I also found the chapter on Vinum confusing. Since Lehey created Vinum, he may need someone to step back and describe the system in layman's terms.Overall, TCF:4E is a must-buy. I already referred to it over the weekend when installing a new FreeBSD gateway, and I expect to consult it repeatedly in the future.

The two books that I use most frequently when administering my FreeBSD server, are this one by Lehey and UNIX System Administration Handbook by Nemeth et al. Lehey's book is easy to understand, and covers most instances where FreeBSD varies from other Unix varieties.My chief complaint with the book (and hence only 4 stars), is that Lehey seems to be a bit conflicted as to whether he wants his book to be a tutorial or a reference book. I have only read the 4th edition, and I suspect some of this problem is due to hauling along portions of the book that used to be necessary which really are not anymore. For example, when it comes to explaining the installation process, the book does not add much value to the free online guide, "FreeBSD Handbook" available on the FreeBSD website. In fact, due to the ever evolving nature of software, the "FreeBSD Handbook" is often more up to date than Lehey's book. In particular, Lehey's book still explains how to install XFree86, while the current version of the OS used XOrg.Lehey does excel in giving a more thorough overview of most other aspects of FreeBSD that do not change quite as quickly. He also does a decent job of pointing the reader to other resources for further information.Lehey created the Vinum Volume Manager (which I admittedly know nothing about, and I skipped his chapter on it), so it is no surprise that the chapter on it is in the top third largest chapters in his book.My advice, if you are just trying out FreeBSD, you can probably get by with the free "FreeBSD Handbook" online. If you plan on maintaining a FreeBSD machine, this book is definitely handy to have on the bookshelf.

This book gives a good overview of the AMC high huts in the white mountains.The author spends a lot of time on the geology of each hut area, which is interesting but, not really what I was most interested about.I would like to have had more info on the history and stories about the huts themselves. It does give a decent overview of all of them, and gives a good understanding of the overall layout of the huts and so forth.I would recommend this book if you are looking to learn about the huts and especially the geology and flora of the area..A similar book to recommend on the history of Mt Washington was "Not without Peril" which gave the lroe and history of hiking on the mountain from the first days

Well, I think it's the only book ever written about the AMC's high huts in the White Mountains. And it is quite informative and useful if you plan to do a lot of hut hikes. The maps and short hike info definitely enhanced my hut trip.But I would rather see something a little less blandly "official" and a little more "behind the scenes." I'd have appreciated more anecdotes about what goes on during those long summer days when the hut crews have spare time. I know that the crews famously play pranks on each other. And surely the advent of "co-ed" crews has resulted in some, eh, hanky panky? If there are such interesting stories, they are not in this book.

This is the book I carry up to the huts--used more frequently than even the White Mountain Guide. It's light, has the trail info I need, as well as a nice history/ecological/geological writeup for each hut, including a self-guided nature walk around each hut.
