Nelson A. Denis was the editorial director of El Diario, the largest Spanish-language newspaper in NYC, and won the Best Editorial Writing award from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. A graduate of Harvard University and Yale Law School, Denis served as a New York State Assemblyman (1997-2001) and has written for the New York Daily News, Newsday, and Harvard Political Review. Denis also wrote and directed the feature film Vote For Me!, which premiered in the Tribeca Film Festival.

I was stunned and astounded by Nelson Denis’enthralling book, “ War Against All Puerto Ricans: Revolution and Terror in America’s Colony.” This book documents a "secret history" of Puerto Rico that is not taught in our schools - not in the US, and definitely not in Puerto Rico. Yet these events did happen, and they are presented this meticulously researched book with nearly 100 pages of footnotes as well as many intriguing photos of that epoch. Remarkably, even some of the footnotes are shocking.The author is a lawyer and the extensive research confirms that. The United States is on trial here. The evidence is clear, convincing, and deeply organized. Hundreds of FBI documents provide the most shameful proof of all. By the end of the book, the entire US government has been placed on the witness stand, cross-examined, and found guilty of stealing an entire island.But the deepest impression from this book is the way Denis told an electrifying story. The attempted assassination of Pres. Harry Truman, the Ponce Massacre, the Revolution of 1950, the Gunfight at Salon Boricua, the prison torture of Albizu Campos... all of these tableaus unfolded like a series of dramatic, high-action movie scenes. I could see these scenes playing, right in front of my eyes. My mind reeling as if I were in a time machine being transported to colonial Puerto Rico.This book would make one hell of a movie. This is sharply written, well-documented, and UNKNOWN history. I wasn't aware that all this happened in Puerto Rico!The book reminds me of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and Gulag Archipelago...it reads like a police blotter, with the entire island as a crime scene.A lot of people are going to re-set their moral compass, and re-think their views about "Puerto Rican history" when they read this book.Bombing two towns in broad daylight...arresting 3,000 Puerto Ricans...jailing and torturing hundreds of them...killing and maiming over 200 of them on Palm Sunday...keeping secret FBI files on over ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND Puerto Ricans...arresting anyone who owned a Puerto Rican flag, or sang the national anthem...This stuff is incredible! Yet it all happened, right under our noses, in broad daylight.What a strange thing for the USA, the "leader of the free world," to do this to an entire island - with millions of people on it.I have to salute WAR AGAINST ALL PUERTO RICANS, for bringing it out into the open.

My husband and I were in San Juan a few weeks ago looking for a dinner site. We'd previously enjoyed eating at St. Germain Bistro on the first floor of this address (Calle Sol 156) and decided to try the rooftop bar. We trooped up the stairway to the top floor, only to be told it was reserved for a private party, but we could have tapas on the second floor. THANK GOODNESS that we settled for mojitos and tapas at the balcony on the second floor!There were photos of Albizu Campos on the wall and a blurb about the building's history in the menu. "It's that guy again," we said. We'd been to Ponce the previous week and learned about the massacre (but never did get inside the Massacre Museum -- it was always closed despite advertised hours saying it was open) and our Ponce AirBnB host had told us we should learn about Albizu. The Ponce historical museum mentioned him frequently, but the signage was in Spanish so we didn't quite catch the significance of the story.So there we were, sitting in Albizu's apartment, looking out of his balcony. I was inspired to order this book, which arrived as we returned home from our trip. It was chilling to read that he looked down from the same balcony to see an arsenal of US guns pointed at him. That same intersection was blocked off for the seige of his apartment ... READ THIS BOOK. And if you can, go visit the apartment.Now that we know his story, the next time we visit this apartment we'll toast an amazing man who "pulled himself up by his bootstraps" to excel at Harvard and do his shining best for his people.Update Sept 27 2017: my relatives in San Juan are entreating us on the mainland to send help ... Hurricane Maria has devastated the island full of fellow U.S. citizens ... if you are or know a lineman who can help restore power please help!

I purchased this book already knowing that my 2.5yo daughter loves the story. The presence of plot alone sets it apart from so many other board books that rely mostly on catchy rhymes and picture identification. And the fact that a small child, Harold, creates his own adventure with a simple crayon, ultimately solving his own problem, is empowering. My daughter loves to flip through the pages of the paperback version of Harold and the Purple Crayon and tell her own version of the tale. The story sparks her imagination and transforms her into a storyteller.So I do recommend Harold and the Purple Crayon, BUT I suggest purchasing it in a different format. For one thing, this edition has printing flaws. The page spread where Harold draws a boat is repeated, and in an order that disrupts the narrative sequence (see images). For another thing, the layout in the board book is condensed: some images are placed side by side that would otherwise be separated by a page turn. This effectively decreases the suspense at times. For example, in the paperback version, readers see Harold fall off a mountain and don't know how he will rescue himself until they turn the page. Not so in the board book, where both the fall and rescue occur on the same page. Suspense is disrupted elsewhere as well.Bottom Line: I recommend this child-empowering story but not in the board book format.

This was a great imaginative picture book, one of those books that definitely is made for young children but can still spark the imagination of an adult. Remembering this book from my own childhood, I got it to read to my nieces and nephews. They lived it as much as I had done when I was little.The kindle version was a slightly awkward view showing two pages at once which made each page rather small on my screen, but then this allowed some of the two page images to be viewed all at once. I would recommend getting this book as a physical copy.

I loved this book from my childhood so I ordered the 60th edition for my daughter. One of the pages is printed upside down. It's in order and perfectly readable but I feel disappointed.

I won't bother going in to the story of Harold and the Purple Crayon, as I'm certain almost anybody considering this purchase grew up with the book at one time or another.However, I did want to offer this suggestion to everyone: spend the extra money on the hardcover edition.I may have set my expectations a bit high, but since the paperback price was relatively expensive (costing 30 - 50% more than comparable paperbacks) and touted as the 50th Anniversary Edition, I thought it would be "nice". However, I have to say that I was pretty disappointed with the construction quality.Unless you're giving it to a teenager or adult as a keepsake type of gift, the paperback isn't going to stand up against an age-appropriate child, or to time itself. If I hadn't bought it as part of the 4-for-3 promotion, I'd almost certainly exchange it for the hardcover.

This little book by Crockett Johnson has been a favorite of our children for at least the last forty years, and now our grandchildren clamor to read it. The old copy is so worn and dilapidated that we had to buy a new one when some of the pages in our original fell out and one was lost!

"Harold and the Purple Crayon" is charming and delightful. It takes about 10 minutes to read aloud and ends with Harold heading off to sleep. In short, it's a perfect bedtime story.Harold is a kid with an imaginary purple crayon that enables him to draw whatever he needs or desires. The story starts with him wanting to take a walk in the moonlight, so he draws a path and a moon. Soon Harold is creating trees, sailboats, dragons, high-rise buildings, and many other figments from his imagination as he goes on an intricate adventure.When Harold is hungry, he draws pies; when he's falling off a mountain, he creates a balloon that brings him safely to ground. The illustrations, in purple (duh!), are thick, crayon-like line drawings that are expressive and elegant in their simplicity.More than anything, the story is about the power and joy of a life of the imagination. It's a book a child can hear over and over again that can become both a trusted friend and a comfortable entrance into the land of dreams.So read it to a beloved child in your life. Or read it to the child in yourself.

My brother "redid" my computer when it died and didn't tell me he installed Windows 10 when I had been using Windows 7! I got about 4 beginner books and this looked like the easiest to start with. Imagine my shock to find I got about 60% of it read before my brain demanded a break--that was about 30-60 PAGES (it's hard to tell with kindle stuff just how many pages you really have!). Still, with computer books, usually two pages are enough to put me to sleep, so this book is fantastic at holding your interest! Since I've already got Windows 10 I don't have to decide yes or no, and I can concentrate on the good stuff and what to do about the problems. Having to write down the operation before going to the computer to actually carry out the action (kinetic activity) strengthens my learning process as I see the instructions and write them, as well, then follow through with them.I will finish reading the book, then start over and this time make notes to take to the computer for action. Other computer books may have been more helpful, but none of them were set up to keep me awake for more than two pages at a time! This book and this author are phenomenal! This is what a good science author is supposed to do--take an esoteric subject (and computers are esoteric to many of us, darlin'!) and explain it in a straightforward manner that is clear and eliminates uncertainty and lays out a detailed map explaining the subject, or the steps necessary to achieve the goal listed. I will be looking for more books by Steve Dota (please, Mr. Dota!) to help me navigate the strange world of computers. I recommend this book.
