What a disappointment! I expected Melissa Miller to write a great book. This book was just silly. I finished the book expecting that somewhere this book would come around and have a logical point, but no.... It was a total waste of time and money. I won't read another Bodhi King book!
This book was a disappointment compared to the Sasha McCandless books by this author. Some of the writing seemed lame to me as did the entire plot. I will try the next one and I hope that it is better. I think I'll stick to her other series. Frankly, the supposition for the conclusion was far-fetched.
Too many characters with no clear direction of who is doing what. I wouldn't recommend this. I read it and I still don't know what happened.
Pastor Bruce Stroud was one of those guys who serves Mammon - the god of wealth. He had established a retirement centre where his every intention was to milk the retirees. Unlike his poverty-stricken father, he had no intentions of being poor. Instead of protecting the retirees, he used people's fear against them in the cruelest way. Voodoo dolls made by a Cuban Santieró merged vaguely with Catholic beliefs including witchcraft, black magic, animal and human sacrifice to get his hands on their wealth. It took a Buddist Forensic Pathologist to uncover his tactics through a process of elimination to expose the Pastor's game and snap the handcuffs on this evil charleton.
Being a huge Melissa F. Miller fan, I had high hopes for the Bodhi King Novels (Dr. King is from Improper Influence of the Sasha McCandless Legal Series) and I am happy to report that the first book in this new series did not let me down!Dr. Bodhi King comes out of early retirement to investigate a cluster of deaths of patients at an assistant living facility (ALF) on a private island in the Florida Keys — patients who seemed healthy before their sudden deaths. "They just up and died in the middle of the night with grotesque grimaces of fear pasted on their faces." ...The only patients dying are Cuban-American and they all seem to have secrets... Members of the Golden Island Church have their own secrets to protect... Nobody seems to want Bodhi to get to the truth...Bodhi heads to Golden Island, where he works with Detective Felicia Williams and Medical Examiner Dr. Joel Ashlund to try to solve the cases before another "guest" dies.This book was a great read from start to finish. The story was intriguing and entertaining. The characters were interesting (Bodhi King was my favourite character, of course) and believable. I thought I had figured who the guilty party was early on, but I was wrong. I have never read a story like this one, the plot was unique.
I just did not get into this one as i have with other MFM books. Bodhi is not my kind of character.
I had read another book by this author in a different series and liked it a lot. I decided to try this book because of that and enjoyed it. There is a really puzzling mystery about several related deaths. There isn't a lot of depth to the characters, but they aren't stock characters. There are quite a few surprising and some interesting cultural information related to religious practices by the victims, all elderly Cuban immigrants.
Having met Bodhi in one of Me Miller's other books, I am so happy to finally get an opportunity to know him better. This book is hard to put down. The twists and turns make it a interesting read. I loved learning about the strength of curses put on people and the effect beliefs have on the human body. Can't wait for the next book..
