While I didn't expect it to have the same breadth of regions/sights as say, Thailand. I was also disappointed with the depth of those areas that are covered.I'm a frequent traveller to Myanmar and have found both this and the 2 previous editions only semi-useful. This most recent edition definitely feels like it was thrown together just so they could say that they had made an update. Other than a few newer hotels in major destinations, there wasn't that much else put in it seems.Having said that, if your're just going to the main tourist areas such as Bagan, Inle, Yangon, etc, this will provide you with plenty of things to see and places to stay. If you're really wanting to scratch beneath the surface and get off the beaten track, you're much better off speaking with the undeniably friendly and helpful locals.
We traveled throughout Myanmar (Burma) for three weeks and this guide came in very helpful, as internet is non-existent in some areas and hit-and-miss in others. We traveled with no reservations so it was nice to have a book to refer to, instead of trying to rely on internet. I found that it was quite helpful for planning, and I also bought the National Geo Map which I hung on the wall. As I traveled around Burma I made notes all throughout the book, to pass along to fellow travelers we met along the way and future travelers to Burma. As I was researching six months prior to departure, I found Myanmar considerably harder to research than the other 45+ countries I've been to. I will say one thing about Myanmar, prices are changing-FAST! There's NO way this book can keep up with the influx of tourists and the prices locals are charging for their services.
Great for planning. Myanmar (or Burma) is still opening it self to the world, so things are changing there very quickly. I had bought the previous version of this guide (that is now completely outdated) and could see how different something were.Burma is a beautiful country and you should go there now! Don't wait a couple years.Nice restaurant and hotels/hostels recommendations and prices are up to date.
Recent update. Not a lot of new ground covered in this edition. Some repackaging and reorganization. The sections on southern and western destinations are virually identical to the previous edition.
Even though this book is relatively new a lot of the information is already dated and it fails to address some of the more obvious needs of a traveler. Its not quite as good as some of the other Lonely Planet guides I've used in the past. That said, I'd have been pretty lost without it. The German guide books covered things not mentioned in this guide.
We've just returned from Burma 2 few wks ago and used this new Lonely Planet Myanmar as our starting point and found this book very useful to carry around in a country that doesn't have Internet connection or constant fast, working connection everywhere (yet). Sure, although some things may be out of date, such as political viewpoints of what you can/cannot talk about w/the locals (locals seemed free to discuss openly w/us their views w/out censoring themselves),or train or bus schedule/times, and hotels that are popping up all over, or restaurants that have moved, etc. Lonely Planet Myanmar is still a bible for all of us travelers who like off the beaten path and want non non-sense tips and guidance at our finger tips. For most up to date on what ever Q. you may have about this incredible changing country, go TripAdvisor forum. It's a great supplement to Lonely Planet. Cheers!

I would give no stars for the section on Chin State which is the reason I purchased the updated version. I visited two towns plus Mt. Victoria in Chin State in March and have been following Google Alerts trying to update plans for my next trip there in January. It is fascinating and so worth making the effort. Very disappointed in this Lonely Planet Myanmar Guide.
