These are my favorite travel guides. I've used them for Vietnam, Angkor Wat, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, and a few other places. They give you a snippets of information and facts, elaborate where necessary, and show diagrams, maps, photos, and give you practical information about what to expect, the customs of the culture you're visiting, etc. I find I can get any information I need online, of course, but I like having something to read ahead of preparing for a trip at home. Cuba isn't known for having easy access to wifi, so that's good to know - this way any maps, etc. can be downloaded in advance. All just very helpful information and printed on thick, glossy pages. They're a little on the heavy side, but not thick so it can be overlooked. I have several on my Wish List to buy in succession after finishing this one and deciding where to go after that.

Because I wanted to read up a bit on Cuba before visiting the country, a friend loaned me her copy of DK’s Eyewitness Travel Guide. After 15 minutes of browsing, I ordered my own copy so I could mark it up. I took a group tour, so I didn’t use some sections (where to stay and eat). However, the general information sections and the ones about the areas I visited are now thoroughly highlighted and dog-eared along with scrawled notes. If you want in depth information, you might want to consider something longer, but I’ve traveled a lot internationally and I can say I definitely got my money’s worth with DK’s Cuba guide.

We just got back from 10 days in Cuba and used this book, the Moon guide, and Conner Gory's 101 Things Every Woman Must Do in Cuba. The latter was the best and this one was the worst. It's like this guide was written by someone who had never been to Cuba. The itineraries are ridiculous. In Cuba, everything takes longer than one might think due to the government and the cultural norms that change the pace of life: little internet, meals that last 2 hours, lack of a subway system. DK at one point suggests that the reader go to 6 museums in one day! The other aspect of this style of travel writing is that it almost wants the traveler to NOT engage or meet with any Cubans in Cuba. Cuba is a spontaneous country and making down to the minute plans is just not possible when the country simply moves at a slower pace and it takes longer to get things done. Tons of the restaurants and bars recommended have since closed, hours are not definite, and a lot of the museums have also changed. Cuba is in flux and for this much money you should add an e-supplement. Finally, titling a chapter "Survival Guide" is some colonialist nonsense. Like, Cuba is second world but many people are happy and thriving. No need to tell the reader how to "survive" in a country with free healthcare.

I've bought DK Eyewitness Travel Guides for a number of countries I visited in the past so I didn't hesitate to buy the same brand for our upcoming trip to Cuba. I was very disappointed in this book. It's many fewer pages than other DK guides and that was reflected in the brief mention of so many places and things about Cuba. Even though I haven't been to Cuba yet, I knew about a number of places to visit that weren't mentioned in this guide. It's really a very superficial overview, leaving us to frequently say "but tell us more about that..." You also should know that the guide comes from England, a country where residents are free to travel to Cuba without restrictions. As an American with restrictions, I found that some of what was written wasn't relevant.

I always liked these travel books. But on this one, the font was small & the print was light grey so hard to read. The pictures & maps was excellent as usual. Not sure if I will buy this series again.

Contains pertinent information in sufficient details, but with a room for improvements. Needs updating: symphony orchestra is non-existent, no information, no program, no performances. Many houses in Havana are falling and crumbling: during our stay in Havana early in November 2013, a house collapsed and killed four people. Havana looks like Dresden in 1945.In the Museo de la Revolucion, a whole wall contains "Rincon de los Imbeciles," depicting caricatures of Bautista and the US Presidents Reagan, Bush Sr, and G. W. Bush with a swastika on his helmet. This depiction in a poor taste was not mentioned in the Guide. Capitolio is closed and under reconstruction, but not much work was performed. Same for the Gran Teatro de la Habana and other buildings.A picture on p.78 in DK guide with old 1952 Chevy in front of the Teatro is from the Michelin guide (2011). Havana, on p. 37: Gran Teatro and 1950's American autos by Claire Bobyer/Michelin. A copywrite infringement?

These are my favorite travel books. I've been buying them for years. I'd give 5 stars except on this particular book the print is very small & quite light & I cannot read it! Very frustrating.

Jeanne Nolan has been growing food organically for more than twenty years. She is a well-known educator and consultant and the founder of the Organic Gardener Ltd., which works with families to develop gardens that are beautiful, productive, and uniquely suited to their homes and lifestyles. She also works extensively with schools, restaurants, not-for-profit organizations, and other institutions. In partnership with Green City Market, she designed, installed, and maintains the Edible Gardens, a five-thousand-square-foot vegetable garden for children in Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo. This is a superior educational book though it is less how-to than how-the-author-did-it. It is very well written and edited, inspiring, personal and touching. I've gardened most seasons for seventy years and I gained a lot from the helpful information at the end of this book. I will keep it handy as a reference.

An engaging story about a woman's journey to quench her thirst for purpose and fulfillment woven with excellent info on gardening and growing, community improvement, and respect for the land. I keep it handy on my kindle for reference- it has a great reference section in the back for growing vegetables, healthy soil techniques, products, gardening with kids, books, mags and websites, organizations, and the sustainable food movement.

I couldn’t put the book down. Jeanne tells her entire life story from her sexual encounters to the pioneering career steps creating the organic gardener. I loved this book

I learned a lot from this book. It explores and overturns assumptions commonly made about disability in a sensitive manner. It is well written and very accessible. Though I ended up being not 100% sold on correlating animal and disability liberation (presented as the thesis of the book, per the subtitle), there is a lot to be gleaned from it, and I highly recommend it.

Powerful arguments, how speciesism and ableism intersect. Animals are viewed as "subhuman" and the disabled "sub-normal".

this book literally changed how i view disability activism and animal rights activism in a way i have never experienced. i am a disabled vegan and yet i never knew how little i knew. this book is a great read and it references many books that also sound interesting. i will re read and i recommended it to my professors

Martin Rivas, the book. It is a good book. It maybe challenging to get the full social and political environment in which it is set for the english reader. A soup opera was produced in Chile based on Martin Rivas, with the same name. Separating one from the other, the soup opera, done professionally and with stupendous actors and actresses, just went too far from the reality of the book. Parts of the scenes simply stupid. But the book is good, entertaining, easy to read.

Alberto Blest Gana reminds me of Mark Twain; a happily married man who loved his country and wrote of things he knew something about. Martin Rivas reminds me of "The Virginian" by Owen Wister, an unpolished precious gem of a man in love with a proud Miss who thinks that she is all that, seasoned well with other characters and events of their time.If I were writing an Introduction to this book which is to be read in English, I would'nt compare the author to other Latin American authors. Readers who speak Spanish and who would be familiar with the other Latin American authors would read Blest Gana in Spanish, not English. I always read Shakespeare in English; the Bard is appreciated best in his own tongue.Alberto Blest Gana may not have been a literary genius. He was a poet, a soldier, an engineer, an Ambassador, a long and happily married man. He served his country well, and most of his life. He wrote of things he knew about: life, love, the politics of his time, in Europe where he lived and where his near ancestors were from; his Father was Irish, his mother's parents came from Spain, and Chile where he was born, lived, and married. The country he knew and loved and served. He was born 20 years after Chile declared independence, 12 years after winning independence from Spain. I opine that even if he were the worst writer in the world (which he wasn't), it would be of interest to read what he had to write fiction or non fiction based on his life alone.Jaime Concha writes the Introduction for this edition. He bladders on translating what others have written about the life of Blest Gana, no problem. If a man like Concha dares to compare Blest Gana with Sarmiento, Marti, Isaacs, and Palma, I'd say Concha has read their works, I'd say he can translate fairly well at least the names of some of their books. Mr Jaime Concha, "El ideal de un Calavera" does not translate to "An Ideal Rogue" (as you wrote again and again and again in the Introduction) but "The Ideal of a Rogue". The most common meaning of calavera is "skull", it can also be translated as "rogue", "rake", "libertine". The Rogue's name in the novel is Abelardo Manrique. He has an ideal, a dream, a chimera, whatever you want to translate as ideal. His ideal is to be loved without conditions, as Abelard was loved by Eloise.Mr Concha, if I were a Spanish teacher instead of a geek and you were a first year student instead of a writer of this Introduction, I'd give you "D", I would be this generous because you showed up and you translated "calavera".

Sourdough is wonderfully written and contains beautiful photographs. I have just about every sourdough baking book and this has fast become my favorite. I have made many loafs of really flavorful bread from the book. I have probably made over 100 loaves of sourdough bread and this book was as enjoyable to me as it would be for a beginner.

Good bread cookbook for the beginner as well as the experienced baker. The first pages give good advice on starters, shaping and problem solving. The recipes use a nice variety of flours and gives even the experienced baker new formulas/recipes to follow.

Great book and well priced

I chose a whopping 5 star rating for this book because I feel like this could help out so many other teens like me that are going through problems, but not only teens, this book could help anyone, really. I recommended this book to so of my adult friends (mom and dad friends) and they really seemed to like it, and I could really tell they are using what they learned in this book because they just seem more... well, happy! They seem to have a better grip on life and emotions. I truly recommend this book to anyone. Eighty years old but still having trouble in life? It's never too late to pick up this book! Maybe you are ten and wish you could escape from the real world but also get your life ready for whatever may happen? I can almost guarantee that this book is that you are looking for! As for some people that don't like to read but want a better life.. like the eighty and ten year olds, I suggest you read this book. Or since this is the 21st century, have a bot or something read this to you. As for the author of this book... thank you. Thank you for helping my grasp on life, my sight to beauty, my entire mindset, and my interactions to people of all types. Though the chance you read my comment is most likely one to many, I still thank you. And thank you to everyone who helped write and or make this book, your efforts will not be forgotten.

This is actually a funny story... I ordered this book because for some crazy reason the hardback was at a lower price than the paperback. So I was like, "SCORE!" then when the book arrived and it was only two inches tall, *facepalm* however, my teenager loved it! And still, gives me crap out not properly reading the description before purchasing the item!

This book was referred to me by the Asperger Experts. My son has aspergers. He is highly intelligent and a sweet soul, but I needed something to help him to understand what makes a person effective/successful in life. As he matures and as he heads off to high school very soon, this book will be so very helpful to him. I feel it is a wonderful resource for parents and teachers to share with all teens. The world is big and coming at them so fast. Lets equip them in every way that we can. There is a workbook that you can purchase also. My son will be working through this (this year) as he starts the 8th grade. Thank you Sean Covey!

We started reading this to our kids at 8 and 9 years old and having a general discussion on habits and behaviors discussed in the book. I share this book with whomever as a great starting point for teens trying to develop an active action plan based on what they want and are interested in, as well as assisting them in reflecting on what it is that they want and what do their current behaviors show that they really want. Great starting point. If your teen is not a reader or a little hesitant, get creative. Read a chapter a night or every few days as a family and discuss it. She often references something she has read in the book with is. I very pleased.

Bought for my 14yo daughter but, my 12 year old son can't wait until he gets to read it too. Author speaks directly to teens and my son was hooked after I read him just a sample. Both kids aren't done reading the book yet so i can't say how effective it is but the fact that they both want to read it says alot about how well the author does in connecting with the younger generation.

My children (13 year old twins) have really enjoyed this book. Sean does a great job of making the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People relevant to teenagers. The books is not a marginally revised version of the original; it is a complete rewrite with entirely different examples and many different quotes.

Bought this for my HS students as an alternative read. They love it! I think I will buy a classroom set and use it as a part of my curriculum next year!
