One of the best books I've read on this topic of saying "no". The section that really stood out for me was the reminder that we are not responsible for other people's reactions when we say "no". This is common sense but profoundly life-altering cause i never thought of it this way. I thought I was responsible.The author doesn't just leave you hanging and give you permission to be a callous jerk by saying "no" to everyone but proceeds to give you a 5 point formula to walk through a "no" that is fair, kind and just. There is a way to feel good, make the other person feel good and still live with integrity. I've not seen a book that has broken it down with so many practical, logical and simple steps. If you're having trouble saying no and wouldn't recognize a boundary if it crashed into you, pick up this book.If you still don't get how to do this, the last several chapters give you so many scripts to say "no" to every person you can possibly think of, including your pet. Well, maybe not your pet, but you get the idea - Mom, boss, best friend spouse, etc etc

This book is about how to say no, but it's really about self confidence and how to take back control of your life.The first half or so covers mindsets, the importance of "sticking up for yourself" and getting yourself comfortable with the idea that yes - it's my choice what I do with my life and what I say yes to.Laura and Mark then give some practical tips of exactly how to tactfully and firmly turn people down when it's just not something you want to do.I must confess though, my favorite part of the book is the second half - where they give real life examples, like your family inviting you to an event that you're not enthused about, or a friend presenting a "business opportunity" (to put it tactfully!).For everything for how to stand up for yourself as a freelancer to various personal situations, the exact scripts are useful to give you a starting point to recite or copy and paste into an email - and entertaining because they're the REAL LIFE uncomfortable situations you want to say no in, not dry, contrived examples that don't apply in real life
Laura Tong gets it and she wants to show the reader how to get it also. She shows readers the price of always being the person who everyone goes to, because they know they can. You will learn that it's ok to say no, the way you whole life will change by saying no, and if you need it different options to help you say no. The book is an easy read that just rolls along. In the end you will find that with her help you really can get you life back. I know I did and I'm glad for it.

I was brought up to think that the habit of saying ‘yes’ is a good and worthy way of responding to requests. It was only though reading Laura Tong’s book that I’ve finally understood that saying ‘yes’ to requests (while secretly wanting to say ‘no’) hurts not only myself but also the person I’m trying to support or help.This is an excellent book and I recommend it whole-heartedly.
