From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. This is ethnography at its best: an outsider's careful, respectful translation of a subculture that is often poorly understood and easily dismissed in academic and political discourse. In this case, the subculture is religious conservatives who believe that homosexuality is a choice to be overcome. Erzen, an assistant professor of comparative studies at Ohio State University, spent a year of intensive dissertation fieldwork in 2000 with a residential program in the ex-gay movement called New Hope. The ministry caters to men, usually from conservative Christian backgrounds, who struggle with a deeply felt contradiction between their sexual desires and their religious convictions. Erzen argues that most analysis of the ex-gay movement has failed to grasp the powerful role of religion, and how many homosexuals yearn to reconcile sexuality and faith. Her study puts complex human faces on this small piece of the ex-gay movement while at the same time providing a well-researched backdrop for where the ministry fits into ongoing debates. She has terrific chapters on the history of the ex-gay movement, the nature/nurture debate around homosexuality and the discourse of addiction that undergirds much of the ex-gay movement. Her book is likely to become a staple for college courses on political discourse, religion and sexuality. (June) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From the Inside Flap

"Erzen is sensitive, savvy, and provocative. Her mastery of historical sources, ethnographic technique, and accessible writing style are evident throughout. She illuminates aspects of conservative Christianity central to the 'culture wars,' deepening our understanding of the movement's internal struggles over sexuality, gender, and family issues. Erzen has written a wonderful book."―Diane Winston, author of Red-Hot and Righteous: The Urban Religion of the Salvation Army"Tanya Erzen's wonderful and timely book provides us with a compelling cultural history of the Christian right in the post-war period―from the cold war to family and sexual politics―as well as remarkable ethnographic insight into the dynamics of Exodus International. With compassion, humor, and insight, Erzen takes the reader through the ideological, organizational, and daily practices used in efforts to change people's theological and sexual orientations, from self-help to conversion testimony."―Faye Ginsburg, Professor of Anthropology, New York University, author of Contested Lives

Tanya Erzen is a professor of religion and gender studies at the University of Puget Sound, and the executive director of the Freedom Education Project Puget Sound; she also wrote God in Captivity: The Rise of Faith-Based Prison Ministries in the Age of Mass Incarceration, and co-edited Zero Tolerance: Quality of Life and the New Police Brutality in New York City. She wrote in the Introduction to this 2006 book, “Doing extended participant observation and interviews provided me with access to a perspective on the ex-gay movement and the Christian Right that journalists’ undercover exposés of ministries or ex-gay testimonial accounts of change have tended to ignore. Similarly… scholarship on the Christian Right … has tended to focus on leadership and political rhetoric rather than ground-level participation… Participants’ observations and interviews revealed how religious and sexual conversion occur as a complicated process over time. They also demonstrated that the ex-gay movement is far from politically cohesive and that there is a wide gulf between leadership and laity. Although my sample was not necessarily representative of the entire ex-gay movement, my focus on a concentrated group of individuals revealed why people joined, what they did while they were there, and what became of them after they left.” (Pg. 10-11)She adds, “Concentrating on individual testimonies … also exposed why some men and women become disillusioned with ministries. This cynicism was borne out in the ways ex-gay men and women I talked to disassociated themselves from the politics of the Christian Right and even the leadership of the ex-gay movement. Some men and women in ex-gay ministries resent that the wider ex-gay movement showcases and distorts their stories to promote an anti-gay political agenda. Many ex-gays admit that although some changes in behavior and identity take place, it is more probable that they will continue as ‘strugglers’ their entire lives.” (Pg. 18)She explains about the ministry she studied, “Pastor Mike Riley … still leads Church of the Open Door in downtown San Rafael, a charismatic nondenominational church and the only one of the four Open Door churches with a congregation primarily composed of ex-gays. New Hope is a ‘para-church’ ministry, meaning that it exists outside an official religious denomination. Even though New Hope offers Bible studies, group prayer, and worship sessions, it is not a church itself and instead affiliates itself with Open Door. Open Door is perhaps the only church in the United States for men and women who are dealing with sexual addiction and homosexuality… Open Door provided an institutional church structure where ex-gays can worship with other people as part of a wider religious community.” (Pg. 24)She notes about the Exodus ex-gay organization, “The most infamous Exodus scandal occurred in 1979 … On a plane en route to speak at a church in Virginia, Michael Cussee and Gary Cooper, and volunteer with Exodus, realized that after years of working together, they were in love. They rewrote their speech, arguing that the church should come to an understanding and acceptance of gay people. Not surprisingly, this proclamation shocked the members of the staid congregation, who were expecting reformed homosexual men… Bussee had been married for several years and was a founding member of Exodus, so his defection was hard on other members.” (Pg. 34)She explains, “Courage is a Catholic organization, with chapters throughout the United States, which was founded and is run by Father John Harvey, a Catholic priest… Father Harvey makes use of NARTH, which will refer people to a therapist and a priest, and … Joseph Nicolosi, the director of NARTH, is Catholic and attends many Courage events. Courage adheres to the Catholic idea that the solution to homosexuality is chastity and community. The Catholic ex-gay movement emphasizes celibacy over heterosexual marriage because celibacy signifies a spiritual and sacrificial path that is in line with Catholic theology… Courage is small, underfunded, and less organized than Exodus. Exodus members do not invite Father Harvey to speak at their meetings… they do not collaborate directly, which has more to do with theological difference than their view on homosexuality… Frank [Worthen of Exodus]… believes that priests and sacraments are unnecessary intermediaries between believers and God… Despite these … differences, Father Harvey aligns himself with groups like Exodus rather than Dignity, a pro-gay Catholic groups … because he lacks other options for allies.” (Pg. 46-48)She says of New Hope, “When new members come to the program, Frank expects each man to become part of the New Hope men’s choir and perform at church. Singing is one of the only musical outlets, because secular music (other than classical) is not permitted in the house. In addition, men can only watch videos that are G or PG, and they are encouraged to rent Christian videos from the local Christian bookstore. They cannot use the Internet because of the availability of pornography, chat rooms, and other places to meet men. The reasons for these restrictions is Frank’s inherent distrust of the influence of popular culture as a potential ‘stumbler’… that might lead to a sexual fall.” (Pg. 93)She states that in 2000, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) “opposes any psychiatric treatment, such as reparative therapy, which is based on the assumption that homosexuality is a mental disorder or that a patient should change his or her sexual orientation… Frank explained, ‘Our aim is to move the APA toward reconsidering their stand on therapy for gays with unwanted homosexual feelings. Our stand is that it is not helpful or right to force people to accept the gay lifestyle when it conflicts with their conscience.’” (Pg 126)She observes that “Joe Dallas, a prominent Exodus spokesman who also works as an ex-gay therapist… Formerly a member of the Metropolitan Community Church, Dallas believes that the ex-gay movement must take a stand on social issues… Yet Dallas, despite his public proclamations, is a complicated figure. He explained that after participating in a march against anti-gay violence, he told the Christians around him that it is important to have regard for the people you oppose, and he openly criticized his ex-gay friends who gloated after the Boy Scouts made its decision to ban homosexuals.” (Pg. 209)She points out that “In September of 2001, two men who worked for the Human Rights Campaign recognized [prominent ex-gay] John Paulk in a gay bar in Washington D.C…. Even Paulk---husband, father, and former drag queen---could not escape the fact that although behavior and identity change, desire and attraction do not. Paulk initially tried to flee the bar when he realized who was speaking with him, and then he denied that he knew it was a gay bar in the first place, protesting that he was only looking for a place to use the bathroom… He only broke down and admitted the truth when photographs of him fleeing the bar surfaced in the press.” (Pg. 213-214)She concludes, “The lives of ex-gay men and women demonstrate that sexual and religious identities are never static or permanent. This idea must become a part of the larger public discussion about sexual rights in order to imagine a world in which everyone is entitled to full benefits of citizenship. Ex-gays’ process of walking in a dark room forces us to re-envision spaces of belonging and politics that are not predicated on the idea that Christianity and homosexuality are incompatible, but on a recognition of the diverse array of sexual identities, practices, and arrangements.” (Pg. 230)This is an excellent, reasonably fair and balanced study, that will be “must reading” for anyone seriously studying the issues of homosexuality and Christianity.

Erzen offers a great insight into one portion the controversial "ex-gay" movement. As an ethnography, Erzen dares to live among a group of persons who share very different religious perspectives and does well to narrate the complexity of the range of theological convictions in the ex-gay movement. At times, it appears Erzen's writing conveys an overly-sympathetic tone because of her own bias. This does not detract from her good work, though. As Erzen describes the lives of several members of one organization, her work raises the serious consideration about religious identity and our human bodies. What happens when my theological convictions tell me my body is wrong? More liberal perspectives point to a flaw in the theological position. More conservative perspectives lift up the flaw in the individual's choice to act in the body. The ex-gay movement, as Ezren narrates, lies somewhere in between the usual dichotomy and highlights the messy life of deep convictions at war in an embodied life.

This is an amazing book. The author clearly does not share the religious or political views of her subjects but at no point is she demeaning or anything less than sympathetic to them as human beings. This book gives a view of the ex-gay movement that is free from the propogandistic tendencies of those who have written with the goal to promote a political or social adgenda. This is a must read for anyone who is interested in what the ex-gay movement is really all about. As a homosexual who was raised in an evengelical church and studied sociology I can't recommend this books strongly enough -- both for those who think they agree and for those who think they disagree with the whole ex-gay idea.

This book is a thoughtful work of scholarship that significantly adds to our understanding of religious efforts to change individuals' homosexual orientation. This book should be of enormous interest to social scientists, mental health professionals, sex researchers, religious leaders, and anyone--straight, gay, ex-gay,, or ex-ex-gay--trying to make sense of the role both homosexuality and the ex-gay movement play in today's "culture wars."Erzen is Assistant Professor of Comparative Studies at Ohio State University, a very good writer, and highly sympathetic to the subjects of ethnographic research she conducted at the evangelical New Hope Ministries. Established in 1973 in a community outside San Francisco, New Hope is the oldest of five residential ex-gay programs in the United States. During her 18 months there, Erzen conducted extensive interviews with 47 men and women, with 19 follow-up interviews. She often spoke and interacted informally with these same people in other contexts, like dinners, church, and the office. She interviewed additional men and women who had completed the program and some who had left the program to live as gay-identified men. She also interviewed members and leaders of Jewish and Catholic ex-gay groups from other parts of the country. She met 60 ex-gay people in the ministry's immediate vicinity and was provided access to New Hope's archives.Straight to Jesus is a sympathetic, sometimes poignant, portrayal of people who acutely suffer conflicts between their sexual and religious identities.

I see that all but one review was for the kindle book long before the release date so that leads me to think the book was given to those people in exchange for a review, even though not all stated such. I also saw a couple 3 and 2 star reviews that are gone which is odd me.When I saw Amie Valpone recommend this book I leaped on amazon and preordered this book and also bought "the big book of organic baby food." It's 2018, pictures are everywhere and everything right now. How do you release two "cook books" with less than 10 photos in the entire book of 222 pages? I have a 9 month old and a 3 and a half year old, my 3 year old LOVES to help in the kitchen and is very hands on. We make muffins, waffles, smoothies, juices and all sorts of tasty snacks. I bought this book for him to have as his own and pick what he wants. When I realized there was only a handful of pictures (one being a photo of a peeled cutie..) I was disappointed, as was he. Being that he can't read, its useless to him. I made the blender chocolate muffins (couldn't take more than one bite, bland and foul tasting) we also made the banana oat breakfast cookies with cranberries (these tasted worse than the muffins) and the broccoli egg muffins (I don't feel like an egg muffin is really even a recipe.) In the days of blogs, instagrams, youtube and the internet in general I like to think that buying a book thats marketed as organic and healthy wouldn't have things like all purpose flour and so much dairy in them.I am so bummed to not be leaving a glowing review because I love to support those who want to share how to incorporate more whole foods into the "diet" of others. If you already make tasty treats, try to limit a lot of dairy or heavy grains, than this most likely isn't you. Yogurt drops, sweet potato toast with avocado on top, zoodles, cauliflower "rice" to name a few, aren't things I feel like most people who don't live under a rock don't already know how to make. We aren't vegan or vegetarian but this just seemed to lean to heavy on foods we only have once and a while. While I own more "healthy recipe" cookbooks than I probably should, this one just isn't for me.Update: While these reciepes don’t create something I want to share in eating with him personally, my toddler loves having his his own recipe book. We have been cooking 1-3 things out of it for him since we bought it. He had the macaroni and peas for lunch yesterday. I added a few other veggies as well and he seemed to enjoy it. Knowing that he helped make it only brings him more joy while eating it! While I do think I can get very “healthy” and tasty recipes elsewhere that I enjoy as well, my toddler is happy and eating what we make together from the book so I’m adding a star for the fun factor this book has brought into the kitchen.

I was so excited to receive this and am a big fan of the author and first book on baby food but this was disappointing. Several recipes are repeated between the two books, maybe with a small tweak at most. New recipes aren’t inventive or any different than what you find online. For instance one recipe calls for baking pear plain with some cinnamon. When many recipes are repeats and others are this obvious, I didn't really feel like the purchase was worth it. So bummed.

I've only just begun to dive into recipes in this book but love Stephanie's overall approach to cooking and variations of dishes that both kids and families will enjoy. My children are now 3 and 5 but this is resource I wish I had access too when they were younger. It's now my go-to gift for parents expecting their 2nd child. I'm excited to introduce them to these recipes as they're different from what I would typically cook and pack more healthful ingredients. I pay close attention to the recipes that you can freeze well as I love a make-ahead hack. Hoping this ups my kids' veggie intake and overall appreciation for flavorful and healthy food

This is a lifesaver! Look I'm no novice, I know my way around a kitchen, but having all these incredible recipes at my fingertips has been a game changer for dinner time. There's also such great information about allergens and foods that will help with my kid's development. I cannot recommend this enough, my kids LOVE the food!!!

I love the content of this book! The actual book however is a bit of a mess. My first copy had an issue with the printing - blurry words and pictures, blurry enough that I had trouble reading them. I was just reading my second copy (which I purchased at Whole Foods), and pages 79-82 just completely fell out! Not ripped or torn, just not properly bound! Yikes! I really would like a clear copy with all pages intact!

Tasty, healthy recipes for kids (and parents!)So much variety, but recipes are all fairly simple.

It was a gift....

This is an excellent book to create, healthy toddler food. It is titled, Organic Toddler Food, however, if you are unable to afgord most organic food, you can still make the meals. Store bought food is ok. But it's more fun when you make your own. Have your child be a part of that.

This book has the potential to strongly minimize, if not erase fears. For those of us with debilitating fears, this can be life changing.Let me just start off by saying that I have had many fears, or specific phobias, since my childhood. My fear of elevators is on top of the list. I completely avoid trains, and planes. I almost dropped out of school because of public speaking, and my fear of hospitals could potentially limit my choice of jobs based on the degree that I am working for. So it's safe to say that fear has strongly impacted my life. I mostly avoided my fears, until I had an incident in a hotel where the only available room was on the 16th floor. The hotel staff looked at me like I was crazy as I trudged up 16 flights of stairs in the stuffy, hot stairwell, triggering a panic attack, and leaving my gasping for air as I reached the top. I knew at this point that I needed to make changes. My therapist had been trying to help me through these fears for years through exposure therapy, and I avoided it for years, saying that there were other things I wanted to focus on first, and that I wasn't ready. After this incident, I returned, begging her for an alternative, but she said the best way to get over my fears was to face them and work through them. I was frustrated and unhopeful. Didn't anyone understand that my fears were SO severe that I COULDN'T face them? Well, then I found this book.Face Your Fears is a guided book that talks about anxiety, fears, and obsessions. It offers a comprehensive plan for exposure therapy, and explains that both flooding (facing your biggest fear all at once) and graded exposure (a more gradual approach) are effective, but to choose which is right for you. Naturally, I felt that if anything was going to work, it would be graded exposure. The book gives reasons for different fears and encourages the reader to find their triggers, and the reason that they have the fears that they do. I had a mix of different reasons for fears, but all of them make sense. Dr. Tolin strongly encourages consulting with your therapist, if you have one, to work through the plan that he details. In a nutshell, to take a graded exposure approach, you choose a minimal task related to your fear, and gradually work your way up. For example, for me even being near an elevator would cause my heart to race, so first I would look for video clips involving people in elevators, such as the ones in the movie 'Elf' where the elevator did not malfunction, and simply watch the process. Once I did that, I would repeat it until I felt no fear at all, and then I would move onto my next step. I would go close to one, look inside, and maybe push the button on the outside. I again would repeat this until completely comfortable, before moving onto the next step, maybe stepping inside an elevator or even going on one but only for one floor. Eventually I would repeat until I felt comfortable taking an elevator to the highest floor possible. The process can be long, but if you are experiencing debilitating fear that is limiting your life, it is worth it. I have been working on this plan with my fear of hospitals and trains, and plan to use it until all of my specific fears are diminished to the point.Dr. Tolin is a gifted psychologist and clearly has a great grasp on the ways of anxiety, phobias and obsessions. However, I also found him to be a wonderful writer. This book was written in a way that was easy to read, and interesting, even in the early chapters where the content was centered mostly around the science and biology related to anxiety disorders. The language was relaxed, and made me feel comfortable. Everything that was said made sense to me, and made me aware of the importance of exposure therapy, and how you really can take it at your own pace. My therapist is wonderful and had told me much of that before, but perhaps I had to see it in a written, comprehensive form in order to understand. In short, this book can be life changing if you use it correctly, and I would recommend seeing a therapist, if possible, to help guide you. Thank you Dr. Tolin, for this life changing book!

This is an excellent book on how to approach exposure therapy for phobias and other anxiety related disorders. However, after reading it I realized that, while I needed to do the exposures they suggested, I really needed professional help with it. I finally sought therapy with a cognitive behavioral therapist because I had slowly developed panic disorder over highway driving and some other issues and felt it was all too daunting to tackle myself, even with a good self-help book such as this. I was lucky to find a therapist who knows how to treat anxiety and panic disorder using exposure therapy and CBT. But this book is what made me aware that my issues are not uncommon, that it's all treatable. I will refer to it for maintenance for a long time after I'm done with therapy, I'm sure.

Over the past two months I've read several books on exposure therapy. Tolin's work has been my favorite. It is accessible, well-structured, and proposes excellent exercises for a wide variety of fear and anxiety issues. He teaches cognitive behavioral therapy techniques in addition to exposure therapy. It is no-bullshit, scientifically-backed therapy, and it's well written. This book is a welcome breath of fresh air in the self-help genre.

My wife has struggled a little with some OCD stuff, so we recently purchased this book based on a doctor's recommendation. I'm extremely glad we did. I think it has helped her and us in a very short period of time. This book is outstanding and very relatable for everyone, from people with severe anxiety issues to people with "normal" everyday anxiety. It really helps you to recognize and has strategies to face the fears that are causing all types of anxiety. Even if you have no anxiety, this book helps you to understand what other people are going through and how you can help them.I think this is the book a lot of people have been looking for to understand their issues and address them in a logical and methodical way. It's NOT some corny self-help book with really obvious recommendations like "think positive and everything will work out".Some of the things I found particularly interesting:1 - Probability over-estimation. This is basically when people convince themselves that something awful is going to happen when the probably is actually extremely low. I heard a strange noise so the plane it is probably going to crash. My boss didn't smile at me this morning so I'm probably getting fired. I found a flea on my cat, so the whole house will become infested and we'll never get rid of them.2 - Safety behaviors. These are things people do to avoid directly facing a fear. Looking away when getting an injection or blood drawn. Holding airplane armrests to "prevent" a plan from crashing. Rearranging items in a particular order. They are responses to fear/anxiety that are coping mechanisms. They are actually just a bad as blatantly avoiding going to the doctor or taking a trip on a plane.3 - There so many types of fear/anxities and responses that I had no idea were legitimate. This book does an excellent job of categorizing and making things simple to understand.Overall, I highly recommend this book.

I have read a lot of books on OCD and anxiety and this one is by far the easiest to read and implement. Dr. Tolin explains the science behind his methods without bogging the reader down with dry statistics and facts. There are plenty of examples in the book and guidelines for how to create your own plan to beat anxiety and fear. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone tired of dealing with anxiety and looking for a way to face their fears.

Amazing book to work through your fears, it is doable!

Great book. Look forward to trying the techniques. Was on Dr. Oz, so I knew he had to know what he is talking about.

A great and full layout for understanding and applying the most powerful tool against anxiety; direct and honest facing of the fears.

Amazon.com Review

The Burgess Shale of British Columbia "is the most precious and important of all fossil localities," writes Stephen Jay Gould. These 600-million-year-old rocks preserve the soft parts of a collection of animals unlike any other. Just how unlike is the subject of Gould's book. Gould describes how the Burgess Shale fauna was discovered, reassembled, and analyzed in detail so clear that the reader actually gets some feeling for what paleobiologists do, in the field and in the lab. The many line drawings are unusually beautiful, and now can be compared to a wonderful collection of photographs in Fossils of the Burgess Shale by Derek Briggs, one of Gould's students. Burgess Shale animals have been called a "paleontological Rorschach test," and not every geologist by any means agrees with Gould's thesis that they represent a "road not taken" in the history of life. Simon Conway Morris, one of the subjects of Wonderful Life, has expressed his disagreement in Crucible of Creation. Wonderful Life was published in 1989, and there has been an explosion of scientific interest in the pre-Cambrian and Cambrian periods, with radical new ideas fighting for dominance. But even though many scientists disagree with Gould about the radical oddity of the Burgess Shale animals, his argument that the history of life is profoundly contingent--as in the movie It's a Wonderful Life, from which this book takes its title--has become more accepted, in theories such as Ward and Brownlee's Rare Earth hypothesis. And Gould's loving, detailed exposition of the labor it took to understand the Burgess Shale remains one of the best explanations of scientific work around. --Mary Ellen Curtin

Stephen Gould, at his best, is a marvelous science writer. The beginning of this book is utterly compelling: written with the aplomb one would expect from Gould, who describes the wonders of evolution. However, after setting up this evolutionary mystery to be solved, he breaks his promise (made earlier in the book) to clarify terms for the lay reader. As a result the second half of the book is an exercise is comparative anatomy and taxonomy that left me confused and-unfortunately-uninterested. I had to put it down and give up. And I don't give up easily. It is a shame we lost Gould at such a young age. I know he could have made this book into a more accessible one.

What a wonderful writer, scientist and educator. Gould's passion for explanation of the evidence for evolution of living things on our planet is shown here. Instead of the same old dinosaur story we find ourselves exploring life long before dinosaurs appeared. How many people even consider that there must have been life that led up to the relatively recent dinosaurs?Gould writes to be accessible to all people, certainly not just scientists. But he's also faithful to the science, patiently describing the evidence and its place in the story.Illustrations are plentiful and add greatly to the explanations. My personal favourite fossil, the amazing pikaia, is left to the end. I wanted more about this little treasure. For this I removed a star. For the rest of the book I give five stars. If you're interested in the real history of life on Earth, you'll be glad to read this. Especially if you're not a traditional scientist.

In British Columbia, Canada paleontologist Charles D Walcott made the discovery of a lifetime. The year was 1909 and Walcott's field season was just winding down when he and his team began finding fossils in the Burgess Shale formation of the Rocky Mountains. Over the next 15 years Walcott collected thousands of strange and unusual fossils that he considered to be ancestral to all of our modern day phyla. In Wonderful Life, Stephen Jay Gould traces the history of this incredible find and comes to some controversial conclusions of his own. The book, published in 1989, was a best seller and won the Aventis prize for science books in 1991 and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in that same year. Some of Gould's colleagues agreed with his conclusions, some did not. The resulting debates went on for years and, on some points, continues to this day. Although some of his original examples were later invalidated by newer research, his main theme is still a matter of some contention. Anyone who has read Gould's monthly essays in Natural History magazine knows that he is an accomplished writer for the interested layperson and Wonderful Life is no exception to that rule. Some 50 years after Walcott's time, in the late '60s a team of of modern scientist led by Harry Whittington did a extensive rework of Walcott's original study resulting in new insights on the biology of these long dead animals. Gould does a detailed accounting of the methodology and technics used in that study. Some of Whittington's findings agreed with Walcott's and some did not, but from this layman's point of view, it made for fascinating reading. A good part of the book addresses some long standing questions in paleontology. Multicellular animals make their first appearance in the fossil record with the Cambrian Explosion and with the Ediacara fauna. How did life get to that point? Did evolution proceed from a simple beginning that, over time, became more complex and diverse? Or did one-celled life first evolve, in a kind of explosion, into many varieties of multi-celled organisms, only a few of which survive today? Did Walcott "shoehorn" his fossils into modern phyla? Were some of the Burgess Shale animals just dead ends that were out competed in the race for survival? The answers to these questions depend on who is doing the analysis and who is doing the asking. In paleontology the study of fossils is like having an obscure, imperfect view of reality and it's only with time and further study that we can get closer to the truth. Wonderful Life is a great book that will give you one mans view on the nature of history and of life.LastRanger

This is a great scientific book that helps explain an apparent contradiction in evolution. Why are there so few but vastly different animal types in the world today? A jellyfish seems to have little in common with a song bird. And yet it iseasy to identify and name the leg bones of a T Rex from hundreds of millions of years ago because the bone structure is virtually identical to humans. The answer seems to be random physical events for which particular characteristicsof life forms have particular survival value. Thus evolution is not a steady march toward perfection but a journey through time interrupted by physical events that semi-randomly select for particular life forms.

Awesome book! It was my first foray into Gould's work, but after I made a visit to Yoho Natl. Park on a trip to Banff and heard about the invertebrate fauna in a historcial geology course, I had to learn more about it, and I'm glad I picked up this book. It is so eloquently written and every argument is highly structured, I really enjoyed reading it. For reference, I'm an engineering student with an interest in geology, so don't be put off by tales of extreme taxonomy or cladistics, it's all spelled out to the point where you can understand the important features and get a feeling for the whole story of the Burgess.

Excellent book! Stephen Jay Gould is a master when it come to taking a very complicated issue and boiling it down to an understandable point. His style of writing keeps the book flowing and easily readable. His topic is one that is usually way above the average person's head, but he brings it down to earth and doesn't insult you as he does it. Enough information and scientific conclusions to be useful to the more advanced reader or student.

One of my favourite books. Whenever I read these types of books, or books on history, I feel as though I am in a time machine going back to these places and time periods. Reading this book, I imagined myself wading through a shallow beach discovering and examining all these weird and wonderful creatures. Wow!

I had no idea that fossils could be so neat. Goes through the politics of administration, the struggles of excavation and the evolution of life on earth with ease. I don't even remember why I read this book, but I loved it.

I was fairly impressed with this cookbook. Its layout is conveniently separated into methods of cooking - Skillet, Oven Baked, Slow Cooker, Grilled, etc. and occasionally further separated by the type of chicken (bone-in vs. boneless). I found it easy to navigate and even easier to read. The recipes themselves are simple even for beginners to follow but have good flavor and are fairly diverse for a chicken based cookbook. I did find a few of them to be fairly underhanded on the level of seasoning they recommended, but I enjoy a lot of flavor & spice in my foods and it is easy enough to adjust the recipe to suit your personal tastes. I would recommend this cookbook if you're looking to diversify your use of chicken.

I just loved all these recipes. I have been looking for something different to try for my kids and husband and this book is absolutely magic. All the recipes in the book are really simple to make. I have prepared some already for my kids and husband and they both loved them. No left overs on our table for a change!!! I couldn't believe all the wonderful recipes for the price. 101 Quick & Easy Chicken Recipes will definitely add a bit of change and flavor to your kitchen table. Highly recommended!!! Two thumbs up!!!

Bought this for my son living in an apartment with 5 other boys at college and he has become quite the cook and used many ofthe recipes in this book. Simple, easy to follow recipes.

While the book does have tons of chicken recipes that I never would have thought of, there isn't really anything exciting about reading this book. It is more akin to a thick pamphlet, than a cook book. There are no pictures to help guide one to the end result and there seems to be quite a few typos or editing mistakes. Still, the ideas are there and if you don't need visual aids to point you in the right direction, then this book will make a nice edition to your kitchen without taking up a lot of room.

If you like using lots of prepared ingredients ( like packets of taco seasoning) , this could be a good book for you. Nothing very original here. Only recommended for beginning cooks or people who don't want to or can't take time to cook.

This book has a couple recipes that I might use, but most of the recipes need serious tweaking. Good for dinner ideas that you can adjust to your own taste.

I love cooking chicken and I love eating chicken will use some of the recipes in this book this summer on the barbecue

Chicken is so healthy and these recipes are great encouragement for using more chicken. The microwave recipes were a surprise to me!
