I'm very impressed with Raw Energy. I've been looking for ways to add more raw food to my diet, but not necessarily at dinner. And I don't have time, nor the organization, for raw food cookbooks that make you start an entree 3-5 days ahead of time to sprout, soak and dehydrate the creation. This book focuses on snacks.I like that most recipes use ingredients I already have around the house. There are a few with more exotic ingredients like spirulina powder, but these are easy to skip over if you don't wish to buy the ingredient. Each recipe is fairly simple and straight forward. Most use a blender or food processor, a few use a dehydrator (but if you're into raw food, you probably already have these anyhow). There are lots of recipes that omit frequently allergic ingredients such as dairy, egg or gluten so I can make snacks for my friend with food allergies.I just made Cashew Maple Oatmeal Squares and they taste just like an out-of-the-oven oatmeal cookie, but cold. There's also recipes for breakfast cereals, "milk"shakes and smoothies, dips, trail mixes and lots of desserts. This book is going to be getting a lot of use at my house.

I really cannot say enough about it--this book has made quite an entrance in our house. My 14 year old daughter who has never read cookbooks looks through it every day and is truly fascinated with the recipes. They make the simple ingredients into fantastic little energy snacks that everyone in the family love!!! We don't care so much about the fact that they are raw recipes, although that's great, but just that they're wonderful tasty and healthy tidbits. We all love chocolate and little sweet snacks and we've made several of the balls for the fridge. My daughter has made a few of the smoothies and I've been making the muesli for breakfast several times a week for months. I've also made the parfaits for a snack after school, and we are going to try some of the dehydrated balls this week. We've had it for months and the excitement hasn't died--even my picky husband likes the treats from this book!!! Just love it so much, MORE BOOKS LIKE THIS, PLEASE!!!!!

I absolutely love this book!I love the simplistic instructions and descriptions that are located in the beginning of the book, since there were some ingredients for recipes that I was a bit confused about (never hearing of some things). But the ingredients were not hard for me to find as most were found in my local grocery store or in my local health food store. The ingredients also were not very expensive. One thing that may get expensive is the use of dried fruits and such, but if you have a food dehydrator then save money and dry them yourself! In the back of this book there is a list not only of the resources used for this book, but also of recommendations for other books to read, as well as websites. Love that this is there! I have checked a few out and so far I find them really helpful and some are even fascinating.I am a college student who struggles with finding tasty, healthy food that I can afford. While for many recipes you need a dehydrator or maybe a food processor or blender, which these items can be pricey if you do not already own them, but the recipes themselves are not expensive if you take into consideration of how many servings are made and so on. Over the last two years I have saved up for, and gotten as holiday gifts, the tools/appliances needed in this book so there were no extra expenses for me. But for people who don't already own some of these tools may have some trouble with a few of the recipes in this book. But there are still plenty of great recipes that do not involve expensive appliances also.I read some reviews who dislike the fact that there are no images of the finished recipe product. I was concerned about this as well but the recipes are so very specific in the instructions and in the ingredient list, and the beginning of the book explains the author's personal definitions of the terms she uses so we know what she means in her instructions. So basically I am saying that it didn't turn out to be an issue of mine. These recipes really don't need step-by-step photos or finished product photos. I am a beginner with raw foods and "cooking" and as long as you pay attention to the instructions your will do very well. Also, the pages are in color and the colors are vibrant. I love the look of each page!I think this book deserves 5 stars, most definitely. Especially for the price.

There are many raw snack foods listed along with their health benefits. And, of course, organic is recommended whenever possible. The chapters lay out like this: Raw Snack Basics; Raw Snack Pantry & Kitchen Equipment Essentials; Raw Snack Prep 101: Learning How to "Uncook"; Super-Satisfying Raw Nut Milks, Shakes, Smoothies, and Frozen Fruit Creams; Fit And Fabulous Fruit And Vegetable Juices; The Snacks That Keep You Going: Energizer Bars, Balls, And Bites; Powerhouse Nut, Seed, And Fruit Blends; Raw Cereals And Delectable Fruit Parfaits; Vegetable Jolt: Crispy Chips, Zippy Dips, And Scrumptious Spreads; Chillin' Fresh, Cold Fruit And Vegetable Soups; Raw Confections: No-Guilt, Nutrient-Packed Candy and Cookies; Suggested Reading; Resources; Index. Doesn't that sound muy interesante?Sometimes, many of the ingredients...including nuts and seeds are not reasonably priced. Also, the energy required to run a dehydrator with no heat so that you don't destroy enzymes can be excessive.I will keep the book and revisit it...there is a lot to learn from it. Even if you're not a vegetarian, or a vegan or a "raw foodie" (what DO you call that??), you can still adapt in small ways to improve the benefit from the foods you eat.

What a wonderful book! Every recipe I have tried so far has been easy to make with delicious results. The book promotes a raw diet however these recipes can be used by anyone wishing to add healthful snacks to their routine. It also includes many alternatives to store bought energy bars and snacks that have chemicals, preservatives or corn syrup that you may not want in your diet. This book is worth having in your cookbook library!

Jerry Izenberg was a veteran boxing journalist and has many entertaining yarns to tell, and in Once There Were Giants he certainly tells them. The problem is that he tells them as more of a memoir than as a serious look at the era of heavyweight boxing from the 1960s to the 1990s.His prejudices in terms of who and what he wished to dwell are truly limiting. For a book that was supposed to begin with Sonny Liston, it spends far too many pages setting the stage for Liston's emergence and delving into the sordid history of the mafia and boxing. The last stanzas focus overwhelmingly on Mike Tyson, give short shrift to Evander Holyfield and are absolutely dismissive of Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe. It smacks very much as the observations of a cranky old man who only cares about what he cares about.Even within those limits, Izenberg is good, but not great. More words spent on secondary figures like Jerry Quarry or Earnie Shavers would have made this a much better book. Instead, he rambles on about the mafia or how his good pal so-and-so knew more about this business than anyone will ever know and things of that nature.Add to that some rather embarrassing grammatical errors and I must also ask where the editor was...My gold standard for works of this kind is Four Kings by George Kimball. Compared to that, this book gets a bronze.

I've been a big fan of the author since the 1970's but was a bit disappointed in this book. although there is a treasure trove of great material at his disposal, the author spends too many pages discussing events long before the main time frame of the book. like many writers of his generation, he seems obsessed with stories about the mob and how they operated in the "old days," many of which i'm sure are apocryphal.it's a shame more time wasn't spent on the epic fights of the era vs. glorified tales of the mob's influence on boxing in the 1930s and 1940s. once the book shifts focus to its main topic, however, it becomes highly readable and interesting, with the author's trademark humor in full bloom.all in all, a pretty good book but had the potential to be much better.

Great boxers in the heavyweight division are names that are recognized by even those who are not fans of the sport. Fighters like Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Joe Frazier, and George Foreman are just a few of the heavyweight champions who have left their mark both in boxing and in the world in general. That era when these and other great heavyweight boxers ruled the sport is chronicled in this terrific book by veteran writer Jerry Izenberg. There is a passage in the prologue that fits the general theme of the book and also expresses the feelings of not only the author but also many of the readers when Izenberg states that “…there will never again be a heavyweight cycle like the one that began when Sonny Liston stopped Floyd Patterson – and ended when Mike Tyson bit a slice out of Evander Holyfield’s ear.” This covers the 35 year period of 1962-1997 and Izenberg tells many great stories about many great fighters from that era. There is Sonny Liston, whom Izenberg states was the last fighter to be controlled by the Mob, a great account of all three classic fights between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. Noteworthy is that Izenberg believes their third bout, the “Thrilla in Manila”, “…was the greatest fight I ever saw. Hell, I think it was the greatest fight anyone saw.” Many who have seen it will echo that sentiment. Then even more great storytelling is in store for the reader as Izenberg tells about both Spinks brothers who held the crown, Leon and Michael and of course, Mike Tyson and all of the chaos surrounding him. This book is a breeze to read, especially for fight fans who remember the days when the heavyweight championship was a title that was held in reverence and was held by one man, not by several because of various organizations who claim to be the “one” who can declare the champ. The stories about these fighters, and some of the epic bouts they fought to either gain, lose or defend their championship are ones that boxing fans will treasure for a long time.I wish to thank Skyhorse Publishing for providing a copy of the book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A good book, much crisp and graceful writing, many sharp insights, but marred by extremely sloppy editing, which permitted unjustified repetition and failed to correct numerous annoying typographical errors. The presentation, therefore, is not worthy of the author.

Lots and lots of of anecdotal entertainment and behind-the-scenes history from the golden age of heavyweight boxing. My only complaint: a few glaring syntax and typo errors missed by the editor of the manuscript.

Jerry Izenberg is the best living sportswriter in the nation and has been for decades. He is insightful and readable. This is his tour de force. I plowed through this book in two days!

An insider's review and some personal memories of what was indeed the golden age of boxing.

Very good survey of the heavyweights from Sonny Liston to Evander Holyfield. There are a few historical errors, for example, Chuck Wepner did not knock Ali down with a right to the head, he stepped on his foot and hit him with a right to the body as Ali was falling. Also, Tyson did not really land any crunching punches on Bruce Seldon, he took a dive after Tyson missed,There were a few other errors also, and some possible errors in judgment, I was surprised he had Frazier ahead in the scoring in the second fight with Ali.He also doesn’t do Lennox Lewis justice, he belongs in the storied history of the giants. One of the best chapters in the book was the prelude where he talked about how the mob controlled boxing on and off for the first 60 years of the 20th century.Izenberg Is a very good writer, his conversations with Mike Tyson were fascinated also. Recommended. I give it four and a half stars because of the errors in history, otherwise it would be five.

great

It has certain gems in it. But no Laser Flip, Varial Heel, 360 Inward Heel, Nollie Heel, or really any nollie tricks for that matter. That's why it gets 4 stars instead of 5, a lot of the tricks I really wanted to learn just wasn't there.

Entertaining read, but not much to it. Very short read for the price. But then again, it's not learning a jet fighter. He did a great job writing in an easy and informative style, but not a lot of information.

This book taught me everything I needed to know about skateboarding. Everything from the basics of pushing off, to ollies, to very and slalom. If you need to know anything about skateboarding, this is the book for you

wow, now i am tony hawk. watch out tony hawk, i am now tony hawk

This is one the greatest skateboarding trick books I have read or looked into buying. My teenager son is all about the skateboarding but he is NOT a big reader. He devoured this book! The step by step pictures really helped so that he wasn't just reading the directions and tips and tricks but actually seeing what each part should look like. The mother in me was grateful to see that the book starts off with a chapter on safety and it even emphasized that pads restricting movement is a myth. It explains everything from what to expect your first time at a skate part to how to get into skateboarding competitively. I also liked the couple of pages devoted to jobs that involve the skateboarding field but aren't 'professional' skateboarding. I want my son to enjoy skateboarding and learn and enjoy all the tricks he can but I also want him to be safe and realistic. I believe "Mastering Skateboarding" does a great job at this. I am very pleased with this one!

Per Welinder is a legend in freestyle skateboarding who now runs Blitz Distribution. He founded Birdhouse Skateboards with Tony Hawk twenty years ago. He knows his stuff inside and out and the book he offers up here is incredible. It includes everything you need to know from building a board to doing tricks. The advice given is top-notch.That he got Bryce Kanights (Thrasher/SICK BOYS) to do the full-color photography is an added bonus which helps bring the instruction to life. Great new resource for skaters to learn the ropes. As the Tony Hawk quote from the back of the book claims: "I'm reassured to know that there are now high-quality instructions and tutorials for learning the tricks that we struggled with for so many years."Great stuff. Would make a good gift and would also be a good purchase for a parent who doesn't know where to begin with their kid. You know who you are. :)

Mastering Skateboarding is a great book for anyone who wants to skate, whether you're just learning or you know how and want to learn some tricks or technique. The first part of the book is devoted to basic riding, and it explains in detail how to start riding if you are a beginner. The book gives great step-by-step guides on many tricks, starting with the basics and going to very advanced tricks. The guides are very informative; the instructions have several steps, with a color photo for every step. This makes it much easier to understand exactly what the book is talking about. The authors also added a bit about skateboarding culture, how to act and a general guide of how not to make a fool out of yourself. There is also information on different styles of skateboarding - such as street boarding and vert boarding - a guide on deciding what kind of skateboard is best for you, and information you will need to tune-up your skateboard.All-in-all, the book is a great book for beginning skateboarders, and even many people who don't skateboard could feasibly enjoy reading Mastering Skateboarding.
